Chapter 1. Introduction

1.1 About Celletra’s Cellular RF Repeaters

Celletra’s Cellular CDMA RF Repeaters provide Up-link (UL) and Down-link

(DL) cell coverage extension. They serve as a sophisticated wireless bi-

directional boosters, sensing and re-amplifying the RF cellular transmission in

DL (from the donor base-station to the mobile users), and in UL (from the

mobile-users to the donor base-station), simultaneously. Coverage extension

results in increasing traffic through the donor base station, thus improving

utilization of the Base Transceiver Station (BTS) resources.

Optimization of this network involves -above all- coverage and interference

control. Repeaters in the CDMA network are therefore interactive with the

donor cell and the neighbouring cells, and require flexible tuning and control.

Their effectiveness depends highly on these and other features.

Overall Unique Advantages

The Celletra Repeater product line shares unique features for exceptional

coverage, low impact on the cell, high controllability, and low maintenance

cost. The repeater system guarantees low Noise Figure (NF), high power

efficiency, unique flexibility in installation, and high reliability.

1.2.1 General Description

Celletra CDMA RF Repeater consists of one unit.

The Repeater, installed in the remote site, receives the DL channel, amplifies

it into the service (disribution) antenna, thus providing the extended coverage.

The UL channel is processed similarly, in a reverse manner.

This integrated structure provides the advantage of easy installation and

maintenance.

Isolation= PSG - CLSG - CLSA - PSA

Where: Isolation = Isolation between the antennas in dB.

PSG = Signal generator output power [dBm].

CLSG = Signal generator cable loss [dB]

(positive value of loss).

CLSA = Spectrum analyzer cable loss [dB]

(positive value of loss).

PSA = Spectrum Analyzer power reading [dBm].

NOTE: Correct isolation between the antennas ensures the Repeater

will work with the required gain without going into oscillations. If the

isolation is not sufficient, it will be necessary to reduce the Repeater

gain – affecting the Repeater coverage area.

seconds if no other key is pressed.

The system reverts to Lock state after 10 minutes of inactivity.

The system has only one security level of “Administrator” when using the

keypad and LCD. This level enables monitoring and changing parameters.

3.9 Repeater System setup instructions

Note that all power measurements should be made in Peak Mode!

3.9.1 ALC setting

Set the DL ALC to 28 dBm.

Set the UL ALC to 20 dBm.

Page 39: 59669572 Cellular 0 5W RF Repeater User Manual 1 0 (1)

Cellular CDMA RF Repeater, 0.5W Installation and Operation Manual

Document No.9130010700 Ver. 1.0 Celletra Proprietary 31

3.9.2 Repeater DL Gain Setting

Isolation between the donor antenna and the sector distribution antenna

should exceed the overall Repeater gain by at least 10db.

G max =Isolation-10dB

The reason for this limit is avoid operation near oscillations of the Repeater. It

s on the isolation between the donor and the distribution antennas.

The required DL gain calculation is based on not exceeding 30 dBm output at

full traffic in all channels within the bandpass of the repeater. The DL gain can

be set within a range of 40 to 80dB as long as the gain does not exceed the

G max defined above.

CAUTION

Do not set excessive gain in the DL, otherwise, the Repeater

may enter the ALC state and the Power Control loop.

The gain set-up is done at night, when traffic is nil and only the BCCH is on

air. Leave a margin, related to the number of channels, for peak time

operation

If the repeater is approaching ALC during peak time, reduce the Gain

respectively.

NOTE: If reduced coverage is required, reduce the gains

accordingly.

3.9.3 Repeater UL Gain Setting

Set the Repeater UL gain value to the same value as the DL. This will make

the received signal at the base station somewhat higher than the noise floor. It

will be optimized at a later stage.

Page 40: 59669572 Cellular 0 5W RF Repeater User Manual 1 0 (1)

Cellular CDMA RF Repeater, 0.5W Installation and Operation Manual

Document No.9130010700 Ver. 1.0 Celletra Proprietary 32

3.9.4 Repeater UL Optimization

1. Drive with a MS to the outskirts of the Repeater coverage area, and

observe the Mobile Tx Power (in test mode). Alternatively, walk indoors to

the worst-case locations.

2. Operate the CCMS software to remotely control the UL gain.

3. If the Mobile Tx Power reaches its maximum power, increase the UL gain

in 1dB steps until the Mobile Tx Power drops by 2dB below its maximum

value.

4. Do not, in any case, set the gain to a higher value than that set in this

Section.

3.10 Noise Rise Check

After completion of the optimization process, verify that the noise at the UL

channel at the BTS does not rise more than 1-2dB due to the Repeater

installation.

In case of noise rise greater than 2dB, decrease UL gain until reaching the

desired noise-rise.
