Exterior Light-Gauge SteelFraming Systems for Curtain-Wall/Axial Load-Bearing

Exterior light-gauge steel framing is used in avariety of applications including axial load-bear-ing and curtain-wall construction.

Axial load-bearing members are used in wall androof truss framing. They are designed to carry both lat-eral and axial loads. Axial framing members provide pri-

mary structural support and have been used as the primary framing system up to nine stories.

Curtain-wall framing members are used in exterior walls to provide an envelope oroutside skin on the building. Light-gauge steel framing members provide exterior envelope (curtain-wall) framing for a variety of construction and finishing systems. Theyare ideal back-up support assemblies for brick-veneer, stucco and E.I.F.S. systems.Dietrich™ curtain-wall framing members are utilized for in-fill, bypass (balloon) and span-drel framing applications. Dietrich’s wide variety of products allow engineers to select aneconomical system to meet any design criteria, including high wind and seismic loads.

Exterior Light-Gauge SteelDeflection Systems

Deflection products and systems are used in both inte-rior and exterior wall assemblies in areas that are sub-jected to movement, including seismic disturbances.Deflection products allow for vertical movement, anddepending on the head-of-wall detail, can also providefor concomitant fire protection.

A variety of deflection products can be used including:

■ SLP-TRK* Slotted Track

■ Long-Leg (Deflection) Track with Spazzer® 5400 Bridging Bar

■ Long-Leg Track with U-Channel and EasyClip™ Clip Angles (U-Series™)

■ Double-Track (Overtrack) System

Exterior Light-Gauge Load-Bearing Wall Headers

Load-bearing headers are structural components or assemblies that carry and redistributeloads over door, window or other wall, floor or roof openings. Headers can be field assem-bled using conventional C-Stud and track members, or specialty headers like the L-Headerand TradeReady® Header can be custom-ordered to fit your specific framing conditions.

The most common header configurations are:

■ L-Header

■ TradeReady® Load-Bearing Header

■ Back to Back (I-Header)

■ Boxed Header

Consideration should be given to specialty headers as they substantially reduce laborand materials. These products tend to be lighter in weight and most are easily insulat-ed after installation, unlike conventional C-Stud box headers that must be insulatedduring fabrication.

Dietrich C-Studs are light-weight, cold-formed galvanizedsteel members used in axial load-bearing walls, curtain-walls, floorjoists and roof truss framing. C-Studs are available in a widearray of sizes, flanges, gauges andyield strengths to obtain optimalperformance at minimal costs.

One of the key differencesbetween the various C-Stud/ Joist framing members is the flange and returndimensions. The flange istypically the bearing surface forcladding materials and a keycontributor to the load-bearingcapacity of the member. Flange sizes include 1-1/4", 1-3/8", 1-5/8", 2", 2-1/2" and 3".

Dietrich CWI™ light-duty curtain-wallstuds have a 1-1/4" flange and 1/4" returnand are used to support the exterior skinin ultra-light applications. CWI studs areavailable only in the Pacific Northwest.

Dietrich CWN™ curtain-wall studs have a1-3/8" flange and 3/8" return and are usedto support the exterior skin or claddingmaterial (metal, stone, tile, glass, etc.) and the wind loads to which they aresubjected.

Dietrich CSJ™ studs/joist have a 1-5/8" flange and a 1/2"return and are considered the industry standard. CSJmembers are the most widely used and specified framingmembers. They provide the vertical strength necessary for demanding load-bearing structural applications and sufficient strength for many joist applications.

Dietrich CSW™ wide studs/joist have a 2" wide flange and a 5/8" return that provides a larger bearing surface forattaching sub-flooring or sheathing materials. This framingmember is also used in axial load-bearing wall assemblies.

Dietrich CSE™ extra-wide studs/joist have a 2-1/2" wideflange and a 5/8" return and are used in floor joistassemblies and heavy loading conditions.

Dietrich CSS™ super-wide studs/joist have a 3" flange and a 1" return and are used in very heavy loading andlong spanning conditions.

Enhance productivity and reduce materials with the Spazzer® 5400‚prenotched, prespaced exterior deflection assembly.■ Eliminates high material cost of custom-made head tracks.

■ Requires only a single generic Long Leg Track to provide deflection.

■ Facilitates sprayable intumescent/elastomeric firestops.

■ Eliminates stud spacing layout at deck.

■ Automatically positions and holds studs rigidly on 12”, 16” or 24” spacing.

This traditional assembly accommodates the deflection of floor beams or floor decks at the head of wall. The single long leg track assembly requires 1-1/2" cold-rolledchannel (CHN) and 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" 16-gauge EasyClip™ Clip Angles (U-Series™) installedcontinuously throughout the uppermost punch-outs to align the studs vertically within the plane of the wall. Deflection track details must be designed for the specificconditions of a building to accommodate the required deflection and end reactions ofthe studs. Deflection tracks cannot be used in axial load-bearing stud conditions orabove continuous window spandrels.

A DoubleTrack™ system is a two-piece assembly thataccommodates deflection of exterior curtain walls. Acustom-made deep leg outer track is installed to theunderside of the floor deck. A wall assembly is constructedon the floor and slid into place. The wall assembly is builtto allow a “gap” at the top for deflection.

The track-over-track assembly, although still used, isbecoming less and less common. The development ofinnovative deflection systems like the SLP-TRK* System(page 66) has significantly improved and streamlined the assembly process. DoubleTrack™ deflection assembliescannot be used in axial load-bearing stud conditions orabove continuous window spandrels.

Traditional, DoubleTrack™ ortrack-over-track curtain-walldeflection system.■ Eliminates bridging.

■ Requires custom top track and longer lead times.

Table Notes

1) Screws shall be #10-16 Buildex or equivalent, with an ultimate shear capacity per screw of 1400#.2) Table to be used by qualified engineers only.3) To determine the capacity of any given connection, compare the jamb and head values, and use the minimum. For example, if a 16-gauge, 50 ksi jamb is used with a

3.625" HDS 18-gauge, 33 ksi head, the design value for F1 is the minimum value of 1680# for the jamb and 682# for the head. Therefore, the design value is 682#.4) For F1 and F2 occurring at the same time, use the squared interaction equation: (f1/F1)^2+(f2/F2)^2<1.0.

Table Notes

1) Tabulated values are for a single HDS header installed withstandard HDSC clips. Each head-to-jamb connection requires (4) #10-16 screws to the header, and (4) #10-16 screws to thejamb. Tabulated values marked with an asterisk will requirespecial engineering of the header-to-jamb connections.

2) Deflections are computed using 0.7 times the components andcladding wind load per Section B1 of the AISI Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Framing - Wall Design. Note that the 0.7 factor is not used for the interior 5 psf loading condition.

3) Unless connections are engineered separately, jambs must bethe same gauge and strength as the header.

4) HDS Header to be installed with open side facing up.5) HDS properties computed in accordance

with AISI NASPEC 2001.

Table Notes

1) The opening is centered vertically about the wall height.

2) The assumed stud spacing adjacent to the opening is 16" O/C or less. For door openings, this table is conservative, and therefore valid.

3) The tabulated values assume a single HDS memberis used at each jamb stud.

4) The tabulated values are limited to 16' for 3.625"walls and 20' for 6" walls. For wider openings orother conditions, contact Dietrich Design Group at 1-800-873-2443.

5) Depending on the actual window width versus thetabulated window width, cells marked with anasterisk may require an end connection that willprevent web crippling. Web crippling is computed inaccordance with the AISI Standard for CFS Wall StudDesign 2004. End track must have a minimumthickness equal to the jamb stud.

6) The tabulated values are based on an unbracedlength of 6' for bending.

7) HDS properties computed in accordance with the2001 AISI NASPEC.

8) Table not valid for openings in load-bearing walls.

1) The opening is centered vertically about the wall height.2) The assumed stud spacing adjacent to the opening is 16" O/C or less.3) The tabulated values assume a single HDS member is used at each

jamb stud.4) The tabulated values are limited to 16' for 3.625" walls and 20' for

6" walls. For wider openings or other conditions, contact DietrichDesign Group at 1-800-873-2443.

5) Depending on the actual window width versus the tabulated windowwidth, cells marked with an asterisk may require an end connectionthat will prevent web crippling. Web crippling is computed inaccordance with the AISI Standard for CFS Wall Stud Design 2004. End track must have a minimum thickness equal to the jamb stud.

6) The tabulated values are based on an unbraced length for bending of 6'.

7) Deflections are computed using 0.7 times the components andcladding wind load per Section B1 of the AISI Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Framing - Wall Design. Note that the 0.7 factor is not used for the interior 5 psf loading condition.

8) HDS properties computed in accordance with the 2001 AISI NASPEC.9) Table not valid for openings in load-bearing walls.

Table Notes

1) Except for wind loads less than 15 psf, values are based on deflection calculations using 70% of components and cladding wind load. This is per IBC 2002 and the AISI Standard for CFS Wall Stud Design 2004.

2) Members are checked for simple span moment and deflection at mid-span, and end shear.3) Limiting heights marked with an asterisk (*) fail in web crippling per the AISI Standard for CFS Wall Stud Design 2004.

A web stiffener or connection that is not susceptible to web crippling is required.4) Check with your local Dietrich plant to verify if HDS members can be supplied in the length required for your job.

Some Dietrich plants can supply HDS members only in 20' maximum lengths.

Properly spacedhorizontal steel bracingprovides resistance tostud rotation and minoraxis buckling under windand axial loads. Block andstrapping is typically usedwhen wall studs exceed6". U-Channel or theSpazzer® bar does notprovide sufficient bracingfor members wider than6". Both stud flanges must

be attached to top and bottom runner flanges to provide properend support. Floor and ceiling runners must also be anchoredsecurely to the structure. To utilize the stud’s load carryingcapacity fully, horizontal bracing must be installed at properintervals.

Lateral bracing consists of a field-cut stud or track for solid blockingand steel strap bracing on both flanges of the studs. Solid blockingis placed at each end of the wall, adjacent to wall openings and 8'O.C. maximum. The blocking is attached to each adjacent stud viaEasyClip™ E- or S- Series™ clips, or when a track is used, the flangesare cut, the web bent and a minimum 4" overlap is used to securethe track block to the studs. Strap bracing, 2" wide and 20-gauge(33 mil) minimum, is fastened to each solid block and stud flange.

Commonly used bracing for wallstuds deeper than 6".■ Provides horizontal bracing for studs deeper than 6”.

■ Blocking is field cut.

■ Used if knockouts do not align.

Dietrich diagonaltension strappingand gusset platecomponents are usedin combination toprovide shearwall(racking restraint) for light-gauge load- bearing framingunder wind andseismic loads. They

are normally installed on both sides of the wall directly over

framing members and are easily covered with facing materials.

Straps are positioned diagonally from the bottom track to the top track. In order to resist load in each direction, an X-configuration should be used. At a minimum, double studsare positioned at ends of the X-brace to serve as compressionstuds. Straps are either attached directly to the compressionstuds or are attached via gusset plates. Compression studsmust be anchored to the foundation, normally with Simpson*uplift anchors. For multi-story construction, the uplift loads areextremely high. It is not uncommon to require 20,000 to40,000 pounds of uplift force at these connections. SinceSimpson® anchors are not designed to resistthis magnitude of force, it isrecommended

that embedded plates be installed prior to pouring theconcrete foundation. A heavy steel assembly is then welded tothe embedded plate and to the compression studs.

Caution: Racking loads are first transferred to the roof orfloor decking and then to the shearwalls (X-bracing). The X-bracing then relies on a proper foundation to resist uplift andshear forces. In order for the system to function properly, theload path from the roof or floor deck to the shearwalls to thefoundation must be complete. This normally requiresadditional bracing, blocking, track and rim splices, drag struts, uplift anchors and heavy-duty foundations.
