No. 34, 2nd November, 2016
Dear Parents,
We hope that you have been able to enjoy the extended break from the school routine and have been able to take advantage of the extra-long weekend.
Our school was beautifully represented by our Student Action Team and Mini Vinnie’s Group at last week’s Mission Mass which was held at St Patrick’s Cathedral. Thank you to the students for both the time that you give to Social Justice, but also being such great St Mary’s people! A report of this event and more photos is located in the RE News in this newsletter.
Our school sessions for Prep Orientation for 2017 begin this week. We wish all our upcoming Preppies a very happy and fruitful time!
Also coming up on Friday, is the Maths Open Hour from 9 to 10am and the Year 6 are running their appreciation day for the whole school, Fun Off Friday! We are looking forward to seeing lots of parents and grandparents joining us in the classrooms for Maths. We are sure the children will also enjoy the activities the Year 6 students have planned for them at Fun Off Friday. Just a reminder, that the maximum amount of money any child should bring is $5.
Congratulations to our Students of the Week last week:

‘The Beatitudes’ ‘How happy are the poor in spirit; theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Happy the gentle: they shall have the earth for their heritage; Happy those who mourn: they shall be comforted; Happy those who hunger and thirst for what is right: they shall be satisfied. Happy the merciful: they shall have mercy shown them; Happy the pure in heart: they shall see God; Happy the peacemakers: they shall be called sons and daughters of God; Happy are those who are persecuted in the cause of
right: theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Happy are you when people abuse you and persecute you and speak all kinds of calumny
against you on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.

Message from the Student Action Team! Would you be interested in coming along to a Community Conversation with students, other parents
and teachers about your children’s screen time? This would be a chance to hear lots of views about
this topic and to share your thoughts as well. The Student Action Team is thinking of holding this
conversation in the hall on a school afternoon just before pickup time but we can only do it if we
have enough interest from parents. Please let us know if you would be interested in coming along;
you can ring the office, tell them in person or email Mrs Glennie
The Garden Have you noticed our new garden? A big thank you to the P & F committee for
supporting this project. Now we are looking for parents and grandparents who
might like to come and help us work in the garden on a casual or regular basis.
Really any help that we can get would be great. We are thinking that volunteer
gardeners could come along at any of the recess times and be joined by a small
group of students; help with planting, weeding, raking,
sweeping, watering, pruning and just enjoying the garden!
Please let us know if you are interested by informing the office
or emailing Mrs Glennie
Thanks and we’d appreciate any help you can give!
Student Action Team.
ST MARY’S CHRISTMAS FAIR and CAROLS 2016
At St Mary’s Primary School From 4.00pm – until 7.00pm Come and enjoy the Christmas
Festivities’ along with some Christmas shopping from our stall holders wares.
CAR PARK ISSUES
Complaints have been made regarding the driving ability of some of our St Mary’s parents. Pulling out in front of oncoming cars, lack of courtesy and dangerous driving has been noted with threats to call the police……. We at St Mary’s are privileged to have off street parking many/most schools are on busy roads with parents having to drop off their children being mindful of oncoming traffic and buses …….can we please be mindful of other cars within the St Mary’s school grounds and our roads and surrounding our community…. Relax and take a breath and remember that an innocent but mindless mistake can impact on someone and ourselves for the rest of our lives.
If you would like to contribute something to the garden we are seeking: - Plants - Old tin cans (no labels). - Gum boots (any size) - Large Tyre (car, bike etc). - Wooden Pallets.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke
The Son of Man came to seek and to find that which was lost.
Jesus entered Jericho and was going through the town when a man whose name
was Zacchaeus made his appearance; he was one of the senior tax collectors and a wealthy man. He was anxious to
see what kind of man Jesus was, but he was too short and could not see him for the crowd; so he ran ahead and
climbed a sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus who was to pass that way. When Jesus reached the spot he
looked up and spoke to him: ‘Zacchaeus, come down. Hurry, because I must stay at your house today.’ And he
hurried down and welcomed him joyfully. They all complained when they saw what was happening. ‘He has gone to
stay at a sinner’s house’ they said. But Zacchaeus stood his ground and said to the Lord, ‘Look, sir, I am going to
give half my property to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody I will pay him back four times the amount.’ And
Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son of Abraham; for the Son of
Man has come to seek out and save what was lost.’
The Gospel of the Lord
God pursues us with his love and friendship. God is merciful, overlooks our sins, loves us, has pity on us, puts his spirit into us.
Jesus searched Zaccheus out in the tree and asked him if he could come to his house and eat (a sign of great friendship). He made Zaccheus' family his friends and assured them God had saved them.
Class Mass: This Thursday 3rd November, 3 / 4 N and 1 / 2 R
will attend the 9.00 a.m. Mass in the church. All welcome to
attend.
Social Justice:
Thank you! St. Mary’s school raised $531.75 for Catholic Mission.
What a fabulous effort!
Mission Mass – On Tuesday 25th October the SAT team and Mini Vinnies members felt privileged to be going to Melbourne to St. Patrick’s Cathedral to be a part of the annual Children’s Mission Mass. Bishop Mark Edwards celebrated Mass. Primrose Dillon read a prayer of the faithful and Karri Pritchard and Patrick Van Der Linden carried our school banner in and out of the cathedral with other schools, it was a real spectacle! We walked around the cathedral after the Mass and had our photo taken with Bishop Mark and with a visiting Bishop from Burma, Most Reverend Felix Thang. All in all, we enjoyed a memorable Mass in a very special and spiritual place, St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
