A Message from the Principal:
As another wonderful year at Reagan Middle School comes to a close, I
would personally like to thank the wonderful teachers, staff, parents,
and friends of Reagan. We are truly a community focused on creating
amazing middle school experiences for our students. Each day our
school is filled with pride, enthusiasm, and a love for teaching and
learning. As with any school, there were some challenges at times. However, I feel
truly blessed to have the most supportive group of parents, teachers, and staff that
were always willing to work together towards solutions in a proactive way.
We’ve celebrated many accomplishments this year, most notably, being named “A
School of Excellence” for the very first time. We were truly honored to be recognized
for the collaboration, dedication, pride, and commitment fostered by our staff,
parents, students, and community as a whole. Excellence, or the quality of being
extremely good or outstanding, is never measured by the actions of one, but rather
the dedication, effort, heart, and soul of many. Thank you staff, students, and
parents for making Reagan a great place to be each and every day.
Thank you to the most amazing PTSO in Prince William. This year was filled with
treats and appreciation for our staff throughout the year; support of the RIDER
program for students; ice cream socials; dances like none we’ve ever seen; athletic
event tailgates; and an amazing donation of $16,500 to purchase laptops towards all
Language Arts classes. A big thank you to Mrs. Desiree Moore, PTSO President, for
her many years of service. We will miss you dearly! Thank you to all of our
wonderful parents and staff for making this a great organization. We are looking
forward to having 100% membership next school year.
Thanks again for another great year and I’m wishing everyone a relaxing summer.
Mustang Pride!!

Thank you to all of our Reagan students, staff, and parents who participated in this year's First
Responder's breakfast to recognize those who look out for our safety on a daily basis. The

Right to Special Programs/Services
The Prince William County Public Schools Division is required to inform the commu-
nity of a student’s right to a free, appropriate public education and the availability of
programs and services, including a special education. The Individuals with Disabilities
Education Improvement Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
(Section 504) are federal laws that give the School Division certain responsibilities
with respect to providing such educational programs to students with disabilities. Un-
der the IDEA and Section 504, the School Division has the responsibility to actively
and continuously identify, locate, and evaluate those children, infant to age 21, living
in Prince William County who may be in need of special education and/or related ser-
vices, or adaptations or accommodations to regular education services. These laws also require the School
Division to:
Refer for possible evaluation any student of school age living in the School Division who a school staff
member suspects may be disabled.
Provide appropriate educational and school‐related opportunities to students with disabilities in an in-
clusive setting to the maximum extent appropriate.
Provide notice of the availability of services and types and location of services to nearby private
schools, pediatricians, and the Health Department.
Provide parents/guardians of students with disabilities with notice of their rights annually, and prior to
their student’s evaluation and placement, or any significant change in their student’s placement.
Develop and implement procedural safeguards with respect to actions regarding the identification, eval-
uation, and placement of students with disabilities.
Provide written notice of the School Division’s procedural safeguards to parents or guardians.
Tdap Immunization Requirement
All rising sixth graders MUST have a Tdap booster shot before starting middle school on August 31, 2017!
Please forward your child’s updated immunization record to the school nurse. For any questions contact your
school nurse.
Student Medication
All of your student’s unused mediation must be picked up from the school nurse before the last day of
school. Please make arrangements to do so with the school nurse as soon as possible. If unused medication is
not picked up by the last day of school, it will be disposed of by school personnel.

Zoo To You
The seventh grade students enjoyed some unusual classmates before Spring
Break. Zoo To You brought a wealth of knowledge, and a few animals, to share with
our students who are learning about habitats, adaptations, and how humans impact the
environments around them. We learned about Capuchin Monkeys, Ring-tailed
Lemurs, Bearded Dragons, Ball Pythons, African Fainting Goats, and Hedgehogs.
Students were able to touch and hold some of the animals and they took tons of pic-
tures, which they didn't share with me.
Mrs. Turner carried the Ball Python around the building, but I don't think the office
staff appreciated it, nor Mr. St. Pierre's chorus class. Mrs. Kidwell was lucky enough
to have a baby goat fall asleep in her lap. Students took their new experiences and
learning and created posters of their animals to decorate our hallway. What a
wonderful experience for our kids!

Keep Your Child Motivated to Learn and Do Well In and Out of School –
From America’s Career Resource Network
It is important to encourage your child to do his or her best in school and in any outside activities in
which her or she may participate. As a parent you can do this by:
Showing love. Provide support and encourage your child to develop his or her interests. Let your child
know that you support and love them is vital to maintaining a close parent-child relationship.
Teaching responsibility. Encourage your child to be responsible for chores, completing homework
assignments, taking on community activities, and acknowledging good and bad decisions that he or she
has made.
• Being a role model. Sometimes a parent's actions can speak louder than words. Show that you value
education and exhibit the values and behavior you hope your child will develop.
• Providing your child with a range of experiences. A range of experiences in sports, music, volunteer
activities, travel, etc., will allow your child to discover and develop his or her strengths.
• Setting limits. Discuss with your child what TV shows, movies and video games are appropriate for
him or her to watch or play. Be aware of the activities and friendships that your child has. It is also
important for you to know what music your child listens to and which magazines he or she reads.
• Talking to your child. Be aware of what your child is doing. Talk to your child about his or her day,
activities, school work, friends and interests. Listen to your child and discuss the subjects that are
important to him or her, even if those subjects do not seem important to you.
• Being aware of potential issues. Know and understand the potential problems or pressures that face
your child such as drug use, depression, eating disorders and poor school performance so that they can
be addressed as soon as possible.
• Monitor your child's progress. Be aware of your child's progress on school work, tests and
assessments, and grades so you can address any potential problems or issues before they become larger.
• Remember your child's next transition — to high school. Make sure that your child is aware of the
classes and programs he or she will need to take in middle school to be prepared for high school and
beyond. Help your child acquire the skills and knowledge needed in various subjects such as English,
science, history, mathematics, foreign languages and computer classes. No matter what classes,
programs or interests your child may want to pursue in middle school, help him or her also consider the
options available during high school and post-high school education and use the time in middle school to

2017-18 School Calendar Set - Pre-Labor Day start, slightly shorter breaks, June 8 last day.
Informed by public preference for more class time before major tests and an earlier end to the school year,
the newly adopted 2017-18 PWCS calendar will begin classes before Labor Day, but finish on June 8.
The selection follows the work of the Calendar Committee, which had proposed two options (Pre -Labor Day
and a Post-Labor Day) recommending the Pre-Labor Day version. Residents then had the chance to review,
express their preferences, and comment on the options through an online survey.
Results showed residents wanted the benefits that come from an early opening, but still preferred to start
classes after the holiday—priorities that were irreconcilable. As a compromise, the School Board adopted a
hybrid of the previously considered calendars, delivering the required number of school days, while
reflecting most, but not all, community preferences.
Classes begin before Labor Day;
Winter and spring breaks are shortened by one day each (compared with the initial pre -Labor Day option)
to allow the earlier end to the school year;
Calendar includes 12 days worth of instructional hours beyond state requirements (based on the length of
the PWCS school day) to absorb the need for weather-related closings or delays without changes**;
Students get maximum instructional time prior to SOLs and other standardized testing;
Classes end June 8.
**The calendar also includes three designated make-up days that would be used in the unlikely event that
built-in allowances for weather issues prove inadequate.

* Early Dismissal Reminders *
Awesome Parents, We truly understand if an emergency arises and you must pick
your child up at dismissal. We will make every effort to see to it
that they are waiting in the office for you when there are
emergency situations. However, the student must be signed out
by a parent or an adult on the emergency card. Please know it’s
not our wishes to make this a difficult transition. However, it’s
really important to present proper ID when arriving for dismissal. Per our county guidelines
and for safety reasons, we must verify your identify always before releasing a student.
Parents, we also request that you arrive no later than 2:40 for early dismissal. Once actual
dismissal starts, it’s very difficult to release individual students because your student may
have exited the building already or is on a bus. Please make sure you know which bus your
child rides. This helps if we have to pull them. Thank you advance for arriving before
2:40 p.m. Our office staff truly appreciates it.
Contacting Teachers, Counselors and Administrators
Parents, please be sure to notify your child’s teachers or
counselors for any academic or behavior concerns. Please be sure
to check out Private Class Pages for homework and classwork
and the Public pages for additional information. If you need
additional assistance, please do not hesitate to email your child’s teacher or grade level
counselor. We are all here to educate and support your child.

On behalf of the RRMS PTSO, we would like to thank the 2016-2017 membership (students, teachers, and
staff) for their generosity. Through the sponsor a teacher campaign on the membership forms at the
beginning of the school year, family members had a option to "Sponsor A Teacher Membership", YOU our
generous members donated enough funds to make every teacher at RRMS a PTSO member. We can proudly
say that 100% of our teachers were paid members! THANK YOU!!!
This year's PTSO, again through your membership, donations, and volunteer hours, was able to:
Request donations for Teacher Survival Kits! Prior to the official school year starting, all of our teachers
come back to school a few weeks early to prepare for the new school year. Our "Teacher Survival Kits" -
over 125 of them - were just a small way to welcome them back! Each bag included things such as Lotion:
when things are rough, Highlighters - to highlight the positive, you get the picture... Starbursts - Hershey
Kisses/hugs - LifeSavers - Erasers - Animal Crackers, Pack of gum, Band aides, mints, Tissues, laundry tide
sticks! They were put together as a group by our PTSO board members and delivered to all of the teachers
and staff. We think it was a great way to start the year off and to let everyone at Reagan know that we
support them! Our goal this year and every year to support all of our students, teachers, and staff!
The start of school means Orientations and Back To School Nights. Many of our teachers and staff are not
able to leave the school during this time and so as a PTSO we were able to provide meals for all of them. We
want to thank again, places like Urban Kitchen, Maaza 29, and Chik Fil A - who helped us provide quality
meals for all.
One of our new ideas this past year was to have a "Stock the Staff Fridge" Throughout the year we were able
to stock the fridge with refreshments along with a chocolates and mints that were filled periodically
throughout the year in the teachers lounge as well.
RIDER cards... Every year the PTSO helps support the Rider Card program by donating more than 100
RIDER Rewards gift cards for students. This year we purchased prepaid gift cards from places like,
Starbucks, Panera Bread, Target, 5 Below, Cold Stone Creamery, Chik Fil A... and more!
During Administrative Appreciation Day - the PTSO was able to deliver 10 Panera boxed lunches to front
office. It truly made them feel special! Teacher Appreciation Week kicked off soon after and as organization
we were able to organize and create a hybrid of both monetary donations and food donations that were sent
in so that we could recognize and appreciate the teachers each day by providing: Swirlie's ice cream, Panera
bagels, cream cheese, and coffee, Chik Fila Box lunches, Home made baked goods, coffees, teas, and serving
Anita's breakfast burritos for Cinco de mayo!
At the start of the school year we had a goal to raise money and purchase technology for the school. This
past month YOUR PTSO was able to write a check to the school in the sum of $16,500.00 to help cover the
purchase of 53 new laptops for the classrooms, along with cart and charging stations. We are most proud of
this!
We want to thank Cookies & Cream for allowing us to have a spirit night at their establishment. Skate N Fun
Zone in Manassas donated $1000.00 to us after we hosted 3 pre-planned events throughout the school year,
F.H. Furr Plumbing donation during teacher appreciation week, and again the many parents who made
additional donations outside of their membership dues! Our box top program was again a success as well as
our business rewards program. Please make sure you save your boxtops this summer and ask your local
grocery stores when the new year starts to re-sign for the rewards programs they have - Giant - Harris Teeter
- are active for 1 year and require you to re-sign. A small part of our business rewards program is through
AMAZON SMILES... if you google amazon smiles - and you sign into your amazon account - at NO cost to
you - every purchase you make can be applied to Reagan Middle School - look it up and check it out... these

are all small ways that our school can receive needed funds so that we can continue to make technology
purchases and the likes... Another BIG WIN for us this year was our Spirit Wear Campaigns.... We received
a lot of positive feedback to this year's spirit wear items. If you know of any rising 5th graders coming to the
school who might be interested in a school magnet, cling, or a few of our items that we may have in stock
please have them email us at [email protected] and we can connect!!!
The students enjoyed a fun filled year when we kicked off Mustang School Spirit with a TailGate Party
(accompanied by Mr. Neal's Amazing Band), Glow Party, and Spring Fling Beach Party!!! The year is not
over yet... and we are ending the year with the 8th Grade MOVING UP - Dance Party to be held at the
Dominion Valley Country Club, as always, this is going to be an amazing event!!!!
None of this could be done without your support and help! THANK YOU for making another successful
year! We are all busy and we know that we can't always do it all... so in any way that you were able to
help - please know that you are all greatly appreciated.
A few weeks ago, as the PTSO rep I was able to attend and represent the PTSO at the School of Excellence
Award Presentation. I said it then and I will say it again, Reagan Middle School has always been a School of
Excellence. Any student passing through these doors has a group of dedicated and amazing teachers and
staff. From Dr. Stephenson and his team opening the school and setting the standard to Mrs. Turner and her
team - TEAM AWESOME - who has taken the school from good to great! They all do so much and make it
all look so very easy. Always positive!
As this year comes to a close, I would like to personally thank this year's board - I know many don't like to
be recognized but - they are all amazing, selfless, and always open to lend a hand. I appreciate their patience
and professionalism. I appreciate the time they have taken from their jobs, families, and personal time.
Thank you to Angie Tarr - VP, Tina Cox - Secretary, Carolyn Blaylock - Treasurer, Shay Porter - Member at
Large, Joy Johnson - Box Tops, and Colleen Quintana our Spirit Wear Coordinator and this year's dance/
party/event planner extraordinaire! Thank you to all who volunteered during events and joined the PTSO
this year. It has been an honor and privilege to get to know you and your children. Your kids are amazing -
every single one of them!!! I’m excited to see what the future has in store for them!
Thank you all for allowing me to carry the torch and pass it on to the next PTSO board for 2017- 18!
All my best,
Desiree Moore

Important Information for Parents and Students Animals in the school setting and school grounds
Parents, please know that we love animals and would welcome them in the school for instructional
purposes per county regulations. Unfortunately, animals, specifically dogs are not allowed in school or
on school grounds. There are signs posted near our fields. We recognize that all animals we’ve seen
are secured to a leash. However, we ask that you adhere to the PWC policy and leave your pets at
home. Please also understand that you may be asked to leave the campus with your animal.
Question/Answer– Good To Know
Q: How do we get important messages or items you may drop off for your child to them in a timely
manner?
A: If it’s an emergency item, we’ll get it to them right away. However, if it’s something they can pick
up during lunch, their names are posted on the message board and they know to report to the message
table to pick the items up. This usually works very well. If a major change will occur for your child for
the day, such as a different route home, please share this and we will have a counselor or administrator
to get the message to them asap. When bringing shoes, please put them in a plastic bag with student’s
name on it.
Q: Can I speak with a teacher during the day if I have questions about my child?
A: During the instructional day, teachers are not able to speak to parents on the phone. However, they
are required to follow-up within 24 - 48 hours. They may also attempt to call during their planning
times.
Q: Am I allowed to have lunch with my child?
A: Absolutely! However, middle school students usually aren't too cool about it. Just let the office
know and you’ll need to sign-in.
Q: Can I watch my child practice sports?
A: Our coaches welcome it. However, please no side-line coaching :-). When visiting inside of the
building, please arrive before the main office closes at 4 p.m. and make sure the coach is aware of your
visit. You must be officially signed in when coming into the building.
Q: Can I volunteer at the middle school?
A: Absolutely! We welcome volunteers. In fact we need parent volunteers in many roles. Please con-
tact Jan Smith at 571.402.3500 if interested.
