Should I Tell Them or Not:Key Insights Why It’s Better to be

Honest with Your Children

Page 3: document

Most people nowadays have lived with the

negative impression of what prisons, jails,

and correctional facilities are built for.

Page 4: document

But if you’ll be able to meet families who are

regular visitors of these places, you’ll understand and realize that what you

see on TV is just an exaggerated version of

the real prison life.

Page 5: document

Contrary to the belief that when a person is in prison they will no longer be loved and respected by other

people. Having regular

communications with the inmate makes

this belief a complete hoax – especially if

parents inside a correctional facility

will have the courage to tell their children

the truth.

Page 6: document

No matter how hard parents try to conceal it, there would be a way for their children to find out. Children

will be devastated, but they deserve to know the TRUTH.

Telling children the TRUTH in such a way that they would not feel any guilt or self-blame is

very vital for them to be enlightened about the realities of the reasons why their parents have

to be in jail.

Here are some of the most important things to remember before telling children the

TRUTH that their loved one is facing a difficult

life in prison

Page 12: document

Telling the truth helps children build trust for adults – no matter how painful it is, as long as you

tell them the truth children will understand.

But what makes children distrust you is when you lied to them about a loved one being behind bars

because for them, it’s an act of deception.

Page 13: document

Children are smart in their own ways –

there are instances that in order to conceal the real

situation of our loved ones to protect them, we give them vague answers about the

absence of a certain person.

Yet, children can still figure it out from the clues they see even if it is unintentionally

revealed.

Page 14: document

When children aren’t given an

explanation that makes sense,

they look for ways to fill in that gap.

Page 15: document

Prepare the children in

accepting phone calls from a loved

one in a correctional

facility – it is best to have the

children understand how

long someone can be away or when the next contact

with their imprisoned loved

one would be.

Page 16: document

Include the imprisoned loved ones in every discussion to make children feel that even though they are not with them, they are still aware of what is happening in the

house. In addition to this, it will reassure the

children that even though jails are places that a person is not ought to be, their

loved ones will are still safe.

Being in prison doesn’t have to be

devastating.Bridge the gap…

End the longing with a

very meaningful phone call
