What have you learned from your
preliminary task?
-
Camera Angles
In the preliminary task we were limited to basic camera angles and shots such as close up and long shot. However, learning that without a range of shots and angles our media product didn't look professional and it became very monotonous to watch as an audience member.
-
Editing
Special effects and editing
techniques increase the quality
and appearance of the film. We
can cut/crop footage using final
cut pro. During the editing process
I realised that people had been
caught in the footage during
filming (shown on the right). I
tried to fix this using a cropping
tool, but the footage became
stretched out, making the
appearance of one of the actors
appear very stretched out. From
this I learnt that when filming its
important to be aware of people
that may be passing by, which
often interrupts the dialogue and
distracts the audience from the
film.

Match on action
Match on action connects different views of the same action, i.e. long shot, then close up of someone opening the door, making it seem as if the motion continues- uninterrupted.
A match on action should begin in the first shot and end in the second shot. We tried used this technique in our prelim video when the officer enters the room and we use a long shot, side angle shot and an establishing shot. However, the shots were a bit disjointed and there were people in the shots. Learning from this, I practiced filming the match on action technique and I also re-created the technique through cropping different shots and rearranging them during the editing process.

180 degree rule
The 180-degree rule of shooting
filming involves rotating in a 180
degree angle around the
conversation so that there is
variation in shots and a smooth
camera movement.
When we tried to film a 180 shot
around the conversation, the
movement of the camera wasnt smooth and the shot appeared
shaky. In light of this when we
were filming our opening
sequence we bought a tripod
with wheels so that the shot was
smooth.

Progression
From the preliminary task to our final opening
sequence, I think our opening sequence shows
increase in knowledge of the filming and editing
process. I had a greater awareness of things around
me, paying much more attention to minuscule
details such as objects in the background of
footage and how they might create/deviate from
our intended effect or meaning were trying to create.
