PUTTING FIRST THINGS FIRST For sure, the challenges before us as followers of Christ and members of His Church are formidable:

Far too many individuals and families in our own surroundings whose sufferings are made more intense with the onset of winter and economic woes.

Advancing a culture of life by defending fundamental dignity and value of all human life. Defending our first and most cherished freedom for religious belief and practice.

These vital issues and many others call forth actions that are spirited, enthusiastic, considerate and committed. And yet, the actions are made meaningful to the degree that we respond to the challenges first and foremost as disciples of Jesus Christ – that is, we first are His friends and followers. Before we engage the culture, we first must let Jesus engage us. Before we converse with others, we first must let Him converse with us. Before we challenge those around us, we first must let Him challenge us. Come, O Most Holy Spirit! Bishop Fulton Sheen (d. 1979) – recently declared a “Servant of God” as a step towards canonization as a Saint – put it like this: "The first word of Jesus in the Gospel was 'come'; the last word of Jesus was 'go'." To this, I have but one word to say - Amen! The summons to evangelize is first a call to conversion – our own deeper conversion to Christ Jesus Our Lord. Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (d. 1153) states this truth in a beautifully poetic manner: "If you want to be a channel, you must first be a reservoir." Again, amen! Such a reservoir is filled by the waters of interior conversion springing forth from our own spiritual renewal. We become the channels of a magnificent transformation of the world in which we live through our own witness of a contrite heart and humble and generous spirit. The Sacrament of Reconciliation especially evangelizes the evangelizers. This Holy Sacrament brings us directly into contact with Jesus, who lavishes the divine mercy upon us so that we can pour it out and transform with the impoverished world. Sidestepping poetry, the English literary great G.K. Chesterton (d.1936) cuts right to the chase: "The answer to the question 'What's wrong with the world?' is simply two words: 'I am.'" Admitting this truth throws open the flood gates to deeper conversion of heart and mind. There is no questioning the many important activities – corporal and spiritual works of mercy abound here - that we witness in our parish including, among so many others, Saint Benedict Catholic School, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and outreach to the needy through Saint Vincent de Paul. Before we stand and act in the name of Christ, however, let us always remember to take our knees before Him.
