Series: Good to Great
Sermon: The Great Commandment
Scripture: Matthew 22:34-40
Bottom Line: Greatness is doing
what love requires.
Barrett’s Bits
Stephen Covey famously and accurately observed, “The main thing is to keep the
main thing the main thing.” It’s not a quote from Scripture, but it certainly could
be. Jesus is asked, “Teacher, what is the greatest commandment?” His answer?
Love God with all that is in you and love others as you love yourself.
Jesus’ response is so often repeated that it has nearly become a cliché. And, by
definition, clichés have become so commonly accepted that they have lost their
punch. We hear, but we don’t hear. The words are there but the impact has been
lost. This is unfortunate, if not downright tragic. Jesus has clearly told us the
main thing, the purpose of life, the reason for being. God is love and those who
seek him imitate him. We love because he first loved us. Love is the main thing!
The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.
This Sunday we will arrive at part three of our five part sermon series, “Good to
Great.” We are on a journey in our personal and communal lives. We want to
move from good enough to great. Our destination was revealed by Jesus in John
14:11-14 when he promised that greater things were yet to come. And Micah told
us of the great requirement to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with
God. In part three we will hear again the words of Jesus to love God and love
others. Jesus often said, “Let those who have ears hear.” Could it be that this
Sunday the words of Jesus will transcend the cliché? Through the Holy Spirit we
may be captured and transformed by the power of the Word. That is my prayer.
You pray with me and together we will see the power of Jesus among us.
Be with us for a transforming and inspiring day of worship! We are determined
to keep the main thing the main thing!
