Out of the blue, Ambrose receives a brusque phone call from a solicitors. Her agent has died in a car crash, she will get a small cheque in the post from the will. The caller rings off abruptly, leaving her in shock. Why did all those she loved have to die?

Bernice wasted no time, and dragged the grieving Ambrose out for a drink. There was nothing like drowning your sorrows to well, drown your sorrows.

Bernice suggets she and Ambrose start working together.

Ambrose didn’t normally do a lot of drinking, but on this particular evening she sunk quite a few. She had been orphaned early, and her agent had been a surrogate parent for years before she’d become an adult.

Uncomfortable with the emotions going on, Bernice changed the subject. When her parents had finally died, a bit of creative thinking was all she’d needed to get back on her feet. Ambrose would be fine, because she had her to help her out.

Bernice thawed enough to let Ambrose have the hug she so desperately needed. She had meant what she said, she would help Ambrose out. She just hoped it wouldn’t take too much, or too long.

While her new neighbour had been bumming around (as far as she could tell anyway) Jen had been much busier. She was constantly practising speeches for interviews, honing her techniques and building her confidence. But as yet, her work had been for vain.

When a call finally came offering her a job, she played it very cool. She asked about the pay, even pretended she wasn’t interested to get it raised a few thousand simoleans. She was thrilled to bits when they informed her she started at the beginning of next week. She was back!

Without really thinking Jen flew up the stairs to tell the nearest person her good news. After knocking, she suddenly had reservations. What would Angus care?

She was invited in, and shyly apologised for disturbing him. She explained how she had just got a job, and had to tell someone before she burst! To her surprise, he was delighted for her, and suggested they go out to dinner to celebrate.

Jen dug a dress out of her wardrobe from when she and Pablo had been dating. It was a lot less flashy than the dresses he’d preferred she wear when they were married, and she loved it. She also found herself unexpectedly excited about the prospect of dinner with a man.

Angus scrubbed up pretty well when he was trying, and seemed to be in a really good mood. She got swept up in the idea of the evening, she giggled, and flirted, never stopped smiling… and found him to be much better company than she had ever imagined.

After their meal, Angus suggested they walk back and make the most of the beautiful evening. He took her through the park, wanting to show her something.

There was a butterfly bush, or buddleia in one corner, and there was a species of butterfly that stayed out at dusk. Jen melted, and gave Angus a close hug. She had completely misjudged him.

Back home, Jen looked back on the evening and feels like she’s let herself down. The first sign of friendship from a man and she’s flinging herself at him like a desperate teen. Perhaps she wasn’t over Pablo as much as she thought she was, but there was no excuse to go googly-eyed over a slob like McKirrick.

Angus on the other hand thought it had been a pretty good evening. It was a bit weird Jen was a politician, he was normally opposed to the powers that be. But she seemed cool, and he respected her views. He wrote that, and about how much he had enjoyed the evening on his blog and went to bed.
