STEVE ALFORD / CAMP DIRECTORSteve is the director/composer for the UNC Asheville Large Jazz Ensemble and multi-reedist who came to Asheville after long stints in Chicago, Europe and Miami. Alford is a graduate of University of Miami’s prestigious Studio Music and Jazz Program where he studied under Gary Keller, Gary Campbell and Ron Miller. Currently the leader/composer of “Rational Discourse”(a progressive contemporary genre-bending ensemble that blurs the lines between Jazz, Concert and Aggressive Rock) and founding member of both “The E.Normus Trio” and “METAL”.

TIM DOYLE / GUITARA graduate of UNC Greensboro and Indiana State University, Tim has worked as a performer and music educator for the past 16 years. An active composer, he produced a CD oforiginals in 2009 and served as the creator/director of the Terre Haute Guitar Club and the Asheville Guitar Club,group guitar programs based on Tim’s work with Robert Fripp, Guitar Craft, and Guitar Circles. He’s developed summer jazz camps and the annual resident Rock Camp for the ISUCommunity School of the Arts and currently teaches at UNCA and the Music Academy Asheville.

JACOB RODRIGUEZ / SAXOPHONEA Multi-Grammy award recipient, Jacob Rodriguez has spent the past 9 years touring the world as a principle member of Michael Buble’s orchestra. Relocating to Asheville from NYC, he has been adjunct faculty at UNC Asheville since 2011, teaching private lessons and ensembles. He is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Joe Temperley and Dick Oatts. Jacob has also performed with Aretha Franklin, Ambrose Akinmusire, and several other internationally celebrated artists.

JUSTIN RAY / TRUMPETA graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, Ray performed regularly with Dave Weckl, Peter Erskine, Kurt Elling, Bill Cunliffe, Alan Pasqua, and many others. In 2003, he joined Michael Buble’s group as an instrumentalist, composer, arranger, etc. He appears on many Grammy-winning recordings, performed at prestigious venues like Madison Square Garden, the Sydney Opera House, Radio City Music Hall, and the Hollywood Bowl. His TV credits include The Late Show, The Tonight Show, Oprah, and SNL. When not touring, Ray teaches trumpet and ensembles at UNC Asheville.

JUSTIN WATT / DRUMSJustin resides in Asheville N.C. where in addition to being an adjunct percussion instructor at UNCA, he also teaches drum set lessons at Furman University in Greenville, S.C. He is also very active in the regional music scene playing regularly with the Keith Davis, “Asheville Art Trio” and “Like Mind Trio” as well as the Greenville Jazz Collective, among many others. Justin also curates the “Asheville Original MusicSeries”, a monthly concert series that features a regional composer and their music.

En route to their degree, students explore experimental and electronic music, roots music, classical and contemporary concert music, improvisational music, and many other genres, all housed inside a comprehensive liberal arts curriculum designed to produce well rounded graduates.

S O , W H A T I S T H E U N C A S U M M E R J A Z ZA N D C O N T E M P O R A R Y M U S I C I N T E N S I V E ?An in-depth summer program for high school, college and continuing students designed by the contemporary music faculty to accelerate all aspects of musical development.Taking its cue from the University’s four year program, the Summer Music Intensive accelerates knowledge and understanding of all forms of improvisational music. Students will participate in a variety of challenging and rewarding ensembles and classes while interacting daily with the faculty and guest artists.

RICHARD SHULMAN / PIANOJazz pianist and composer Richard Shulman combines beauty and creativity in his original music and through the Great American Songbook. He has performed at the Weil Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Art Park, the Kool Jazz Festival, the United Nations and numerous venues throughout North America and in Europe, and has created 25 albums on his label, RichHeart Music. ZACK PAGE / BASSA professional bassist since the early ‘90s, Zack’s touring work has taken him to all 50 U.S. States, the Caribbean islands, Australia, South America, Europe and the Far East, with a stop at the Montreaux Jazz Festival, playing and recording with the likes of Billy Higgins, Delfeayo Marsalis, Cyrus Chestnut, Marvin Stamm, Eddie Daniels and Babik Reinhardt, the son of gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. Calling Asheville home after time in Los Angeles and NYC, he enjoys a busy freelance schedule with many of North Carolina’s finest musicians.

MATTHEW RICHMOND / VIBES, PERCUSSION, COMPOSITIONMatthew is a percussionist, composer, recording artist, and educator in an extensive variety of styles and settings, from rock, jazz, and world music bands to symphony orches-tras, musical theater, and drum corps. He performs most frequently with his original jazz project The Like Mind Trio, and the Asheville Symphony Orchestra. Matthew got his M.M. at Ithaca college and has been teaching percussion and composition at UNCA since 2005.
