Constant amplitude modulationThe third variation is constant-envelope modulation. GSM uses a variation of constant amplitude modulation format called 0.3 GMSK (Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying). In constant-envelope modulation the amplitude of the carrier is constant, regardless of the variation in the modulating signal. It is a power-efficient scheme that allows efficient class-C amplifiers to be used without introducing degradation in thespectral occupancy of the transmitted signal. However, constant-envelope modulation techniques occupy a larger bandwidth than schemes which are linear. In linear schemes, the amplitude of the transmitted signal varies with the modulating digital signal as in BPSK or QPSK. In systems where bandwidth efficiency is more important than power efficiency, constant envelope modulation is not as well suited.MSK is a special type of FSK where the peak-to-peak frequency deviation is equal to half the bit rate.GMSK is a derivative of MSK where the bandwidth required is further reduced by passing the modulating waveform through a Gaussian filter. The Gaussian filter minimizes the instantaneous frequency variations over time. GMSK is a spectrallyefficient modulation scheme and is particularly useful in mobile radio systems. It has a constant envelope, spectral efficiency, good BER performance, and is self-synchronizing.

• Summaamalla I- jaQ-komponentit, saadaan ao.

Sovelluksesta riippuu kumpi ominaisuus on tärkeämpi.

fc = 0,5(f1 +f2), niin saadaan merkkitaajuuksille
f1 = fc + ½ ∆ff2 = fc - ½ ∆ f
• Yhden bittivälin Tb aikana aallon vaihe muuttuu +π/2 tai –π/2 radiaania eli tilojen ero on päätöshetkellä 0 tai π radiaania
• ilmaisu toteutetaan bittipareittain

5.3.5. GMSK - Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying
GMSK on jatkuvavaiheisen FSK:n sovellusRF-kaistanleveyttä kontrolloidaan Gaussin alipäästösuodattimen kaistanleveydellä
– Gaussin suotimen impulssivaste on muotoa h(t) = e-αt2

GMSK Signals
In GMSK, low values of BT create significantintersymbol interference (ISI). In the diagram, the portion of the symbol energy α acts as ISI for adjacent symbols. If BT is less than 0.3, some form of combating the ISI is required.

GSM Modulate
Output: 270.833 kbits/s

Gaussian minimum shift keying (GMSK) is a special type of digital frequency modulation (FM). GMSK was chosen over other modulator types, e.g., quaternary phase shift keying (QPSK), because GMSK has the effect of minimizing the modulation spectrum and improving channel efficiency. The data rate of 270.833 kbits/sec was chosen to be exactly four times the RF frequency shift.
Applying a Gaussian pre-modulation filter further reduces the modulation spectrum. The filter slows down rapid frequency transitions, which would otherwise spread energy into adjacent channels.
Why not QPSK? GMSK has a narrower spectral width than QPSK.GMSK helps limit adjacent channel interference to a greater extent then QPSK.GMSK requires less complex and less power efficient RF power amplifiers.
•GSM:ssä – Gaussian-suotimen kaistanleveys on 81,3 kHz– raaka datanopeus on 270,833 kbit/s– tällöin BT = 0,3 Hz/(bit/s)– data siirretään 200 kHz kanavassa => spektritehokkuudeksi saadaan 1,35 bit/s/Hz

Information
Figure illustrates the operation principle of MSK. Carrier waveforms are drawn as very low frequency signals to make the relationship between data and carrier waveforms clear. Actually in GSM a single data bit contains 3000 carrier cycles instead of one or half in figure.

Multi-level (M-ary) Phase and Amplitude Modulation
Amplitude and phase shift keying can be combined to transmit several bits per symbol (in this case M=4). These modulation schemes are often refered to as linear, as they require linear amplification.
16QAM has the largest distance between points, but requires very linear amplification. 16PSK has less stringent linearity requirements, but has less spacing between constellation points, and is therefore more affected by noise.
M-ary schemes are more bandwidth efficient, but more susceptible to noise.

tehotiheys
kuvan perusteella voidaan todeta:
1. kaikkien menetelmien BER pienenee monotonisesti Eb/N0:n kasvaessa2. koherentisti ilmaistut BPSK, QPSK ja MSK aiheuttavat pienimmän BER:n
kaikilla tehotasoilla3.
koherenttiin BFSK-menetelmään)4. suurilla Eb/N0:n arvoilla koherentin ilmaisun antama etu vähenee noin 1 dB:in5. tehontarpeen ero suurilla Eb/N0:n arvoilla on n. 4 dB parhaimman (koherentit
6. QPSK ja BPSK käyttäytyvät samalla tavalla, mutta QPSK pystyy siirtämään kaksinkertaisen bittimäärän samalla siirtokaistalla

Shannon-Hartley Capacity Theorem
For error free communication, it is possible to define the capacity which can be supported in an additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) channel.
where fb = Capacity (bits per second)W = bandwidth of the modulating baseband signal (Hz)Eb = energy per bitη = noise power density (watts/Hz)
thus Ebfb = total signal powerηW = total noise powerfb/W = bandwidth efficiency (bits per second per Hz)
fb/W = log2(1 + Eb fb /ηW)

Coherent Reception
An estimate of the channel phase and attenuation is recovered. It is then possible to reproduce the transmitted signal, and demodulate. It is necessary to have an accurate version of the carrier, otherwise errors are introduced. Carrier recovery methods include:
Pilot Tone (such as Transparent Tone in Band)– Less power in information bearing signal– High peak-to-mean power ratio
Pilot Symbol Assisted Modulation– Less power in information bearing signal
Carrier Recovery (such as Costas loop)– The carrier is recovered from the information signal
30
18-Mar-04 Siirtotekniikka / JPR 302
Differential Reception
In the transmitter, each symbol is modulated relative to the previous symbol, for example in differential BPSK:
– 0 = no change 1 = +180o
In the receiver, the current symbol is demodulated using the previous symbol as a reference. The previous symbol acts as an estimate of the channel.Differential reception is theoretical 3dB poorer than coherent. This is because the differential system has two sources of error: a corrupted symbol, and a corrupted reference (the previous symbol).Non-coherent reception is often easier to implement.
18-Mar-04 Siirtotekniikka / JPR 303
Modulation Summary
Phase Shift Keying is often used, as it provides a highly bandwidth efficient modulation scheme.QPSK, modulation is very robust, but requires some form of linear amplification. Alternatives (e.g. Offset QPSK and π/4-QPSK) can be implemented, and reduce the envelope variations of the signal.High level M-ary schemes (such as 64-QAM) are very bandwidth-efficient, but more susceptible to noise and require linear amplification.Constant envelope schemes (such as GMSK) can be employed since an efficient, non-linear amplifier can be used.Coherent reception provides better performance than differential, but requires a more complex receiver.
