Downtown YMCA of Greater St. Louis Swimming Pool is First in the Nation With New Voice Displayed on Bottom of the Pool!

swim For life! The Downtown Y is very proud to be the first YMCA in the nation to display a benefit statement on the bottom of our swimming pool. The message, “Swim For Life”, is in the voice of our new brand. The Down-town Y pool was closed in June and July for mainte-nance and repairs. It was over this period of time that the staff identified an opportunity to lead the nation in the new voice branding. What better place to show our passion for swimming in our new voice than the bottom of our pool for all swimmers to see.

The swimming pool at the Downtown Y is open year-round and offers both swim lessons and aquatic aer-obics. Aquatic aerobic classes offer less resistance and stress on your joints. You still get a great work-out, but less strain on your body!

Explore the mind of the greatest genius of all time at the

Da Vinci Machines Exhibition

The DaVinci Machines Exhibition, on loan from the Museum of Leonardo da Vinci in Florence, Italy, contains over sixty hand-crafted inventions built from Leonardo’s 500 year old designs and is the life work of three gen-erations of Florentine artisans, who have painstakingly brought to life the creations and concepts devised by the brilliant scientist, inventor and artist Leonardo Da Vinci. The collection features the major and most striking inventions of the origi-nal Renaissance Man. Many of the machines on display are interactive allowing visitors to touch and handle the models to gain a first-hand ap-preciation of how they work. The machines on display include the “bicycle”, “spring powered car”, “hang glider” and the “air screw”, a precursor to the helicopter. And for the first time ever the North American tour of the exhibi-tion will feature “The Da Vinci Mechanical Lion” that was given as a gift to the King of France. Models are grouped by themes: War Machines, Flying Machines, and Nauti-cal & Hydraulic Machines. The Da Vinci Machines Exhibition is open thru October 31, 2011 from 10:00am to 6:00pm daily at Bank of America Plaza in Downtown St. Louis (8th and Market Street – across the street from City Garden and Kiener Plaza) For more information about the exhibit please call 314-241-1241 or visit the web site at www.davinciexhibitstl.com

SOLAR LIGHT

BULBSKatsaros sells “business in a box” kits that entrepreneurs in Kenya and Tanzania can sell to villages at a profit. It started with such a simple concept: A solar light bulb that charges up during the day and lights the night when the sun sets.

Inventor Steve Katsaros perfected his design in June 2010, and four days later he had a patent in hand.He knew it was a good product, but he didn’t know what to do with it. “It wasn’t un-til after we created it that we asked ourselves, ‘How do we market this,’” Katsaros says. “And we learned that the largest market was the developing world.”

As Katsaros began researching markets in developing countries, he began to real-ize that his solar light bulb could potentially make a huge impact on the 1.4 billion people around the world who don’t have access to an electrical grid.

Many use fuel lamps that burn kerosene, which is costly, dirty and can also be unhealthy.

He dubbed his company Nokero -- short for “No Kerosene” -- and set out to get his bulbs into as many hands a possible in the developing world.

First, Katsaros had to answer a key question that would determine how he would have the strongest impact: should his company be nonprofit, or for-profit?

Katsaros found inspiration from the 2008 book by Paul Polak, “Out of Poverty.”

Polak, who has worked in developing nations for 30 years, believes that the char-ity model of aid used by nonprofit organizations doesn’t work -- despite its good intentions.

The best way to help people, according to Polak, is to treat them as consumers. If you can sell to them, he says, you can help them.

“In the beginning I was a nut case and nobody paid attention,” Po-lak says. “The consensus was 30 years ago that this is what caused poverty, and to be involved in busi-ness was outrageous and evil.”

“You can feel really good about yourself giving stuff away ... but if you are going to sell things to people, you need to have respect for them because no one is going to buy something if you have con-tempt for them.”

He says market forces will ensure that the right products get into the marketplace and ultimately lead to empowering people in develop-ing countries to be better able to fend for themselves.
