In order to establish a new alliance in mass transfer business RASCHIG GmbH and its parent companyPMC GLOBAL INC have acquired JAEGER PRODUCTS INC., a Houston Texas based company, which isa major manufacturer of tower packings, column internals and speciality trays and very active in the MassTransfer and Environmental Business.

RASCHIG JAEGER will be integrated into the PMC network of highly specialized, internationally operatingcompanies and will therefore be better prepared to meet increased globalization and further improvedcustomer orientation. Wherever in the world – in all continents – RASCHIG JAEGER is on the spot.

Synergies

This strategic acquisition combining RASCHIG and JAEGER into one larger group gives a great advantageto our customers giving them access to products of both entities in Europe, The Americas and in other partsof the world. It will create new dimensions in mass transfer technology. The advantages of our processengineering know-how and our technologies benefit even more the planning, modernization andconstruction of our clients’ processes. And: saving energy and investment cost is part of it.

The new alliance offers a diverse array of products to meet the mass transfer needs of the industries. Whilespecializing in high performance products, the comprehensive products line of RASCHIG JAEGER alsoincludes traditional fractional trays as well as structured and random packing types that best fit theapplication.

Leading In-house distributor test-facility

The company operates one of the largest in-house distributor test-facilities worldwide. Liquid distributorscan be tested up to 12m in diameter at a maximum liquid load of 2400m3 per hour.

FeaturesMAX-PAKTM is comprised of a series of corrugated sheets having openings formed by strategically cuttingparallel slits in the shape of “W’s” and bending the material between the cuts in the opposite direction of thecorrugation. “V” shaped tabs , formed as a result of the slitting process, are precisely bent up and down toincrease open area and to direct liquid to the opposite side of the sheet. The openings and tabs enhancegas and liquid turbulence further helping gas/liquid contacting.

INTRODUCTION

Jaeger Metal MAX-PAKTM is the most efficient andeconomical structured packing in the industry today.MAX­PAK structured packing is ideal for difficultseparations requiring a large number of theoreticalstages in low liquid rate absorption/stripping systems,or applications that require a wide operating range(turn down). This is due to very low pressure dropacross the bed and superior liquid spreadingcharacteristics over the packing surface.

Specially designed vertical sheets maximizegas/liquid contacting, mixing and renewable liquid filmformation. These sheets incorporate pressure dropreducing and liquid diversion openings that arestrategically located where they are needed resultingin a higher volume throughput capacity with no deadspace. The shapes of the openings are speciallydesigned for guiding and directing gas and liquidflows for full integration of gas/liquid contacting. Theunique design of these openings favorscommunication between the back and front of eachlayer, this providing maximum area and distribution.

In a typical application, the fluid flowing down thecolumn drips off the downward facing tabs andspreads on the surface of the sheets. In high liquidloading applications where the liquid might have atendency to bridge the opening, an upward bent tabdirects the liquid to the underside of thecorresponding sheet. This, MAX-PAKTM’s designeffectively handles a wide operating range.

LIQUID & GAS DISTRIBUTION

Good initial distribution of vapor and liquid is essentialfor the proper performance of any packing, and this isespecially true for high performance products likeMAX-PAKTM, VSP®, and Jaeger TRI-PACKS®. Theproper design and installation of gas and liquiddistributors has become a critical issue in masstransfer applications projects. Jaeger has theengineering and production capabilities to addressyour distribution needs effectively to maximize theperformance of packings in your application. Thedesign of distributors goes hand-in-hand with theselection of MAX-PAKTM. Jaeger can supply you witha completely engineered package that includes thepackings, distributors, and other internals.

ENGINEERING SUPPORTThe success of a mass transfer job depends as muchon the quality of the hardware as it does on the qualityof the engineering support provided by the supplier.Jaeger Products has acquired and continues todevelop the capability to provide its customers withsuperior engineering support in the areas of packingselection, tower and internals design, capacity andefficiency improvement, and peripherals design. Thecombination of packing and internals is individuallytailored for best results in each application.Jaeger will assist you or your agent in the design andinstallation of the total mass transfer system and willalways advise you when better choices of hardwareexist. Each mass transfer application is unique andrequires careful engineering to maximize design andoperation reliability. Call Jaeger Products with anymass transfer question and you will have an interestedand sympathetic ear.

INTERNALSJaeger can also engineer and supply all other internalsassociated with structured packing installations, suchas liquid collectors, redistributors, support plates, misteliminators, etc.

INSTALLATIONLayers of MAX-PAKTM elements are stacked oneabove another by rotating them approximately 90degrees. MAX-PAKTM’s standard design element is 12inches tall and 12 inches wide which will pass throughand 18-inch access manway. Special size elements orfull diameter elements are also available and theseunits can be supplied with lifting or pulling lugs. Heavygloves and protective clothing should always be wornduring handling and installation.

TEST RESULTSAll of the test data presented in this brochure is basedon independent work performed by the University ofTexas Center for Energy Studies, Separation ResearchProgram and Fractionation Research, Inc. Additionaltests are being performed by other universities andindependent testing organizations, and these resultswill be made available when the work has beencompleted

The above plot shows the effect of total pressure on HETP values. The low HETP of Max-PakTM makes it speciallysuitable for vacuum distillation. The high capacity of Max-PakTM makes it a very important alternative in tower revamps aswell as in cost-effective grass root designs.
