Waste Management Awards Town of Eden with 2015 Think

Green® Grant Thirty-Nine Keep America Beautiful Affiliates and Partner Organizations

Receive Grants to Support Local Community Improvement Initiatives

May 11th, 2015 – Keep America Beautiful, the nation’s leading nonprofit that builds clean, green and beautiful communities, and Waste Management (NYSE:WM) an-nounced that the Town of Eden has been awarded a 2015 Waste Management Think Green® Grant of $5,000.00. The Town of Eden’s Think Green® Grant is one of 39 awarded to Keep America Beautiful community-based affiliates and partner organizations across the country. The Waste Management Think Green® Grants are part of the environmental services company’s commitment to encourage the development and sustainability of environ-mental solutions that improve a community’s environment. The merit-based grant program supports projects that are implemented to address local community needs. The Town of Eden is using its Think Green® Grant for “The Blooming Mile”. The Blooming Mile project began with a New York State grant and this new Think Green® Grant will enable the Town to continue to build upon what has already been accomplished. Newly planted trees, flower pots, and small pocket streetscapes will combine with over-all beautification efforts along Main Street Eden. “On behalf of the Town of Eden, I would like to thank “Keep America Beautiful” and Mike DeClerck, of Waste Management, for the opportunity to apply for this generous grant. We are absolutely delighted to receive this $5,000 “Think Green” award through the support and effort of the Waste Management Corporation. This award will allow us to continue our enhancement of Main Street in the Hamlet of Eden, moving forward with our beautification efforts”, said Eden Town Supervisor, Glenn R. Nellis. Waste Management is pleased to be a committed com-munity partner with the Town of Eden and looks forward to seeing the results of the planned improvements on Main Street in the coming months. “I know I speak for the entire team here at Waste Manage-ment when I say that it is indeed our pleasure to be in a po-sition to present this 2015 “Think Green” Grant to the Town of Eden. Eden consistently and enthusiastically strives to be as “green” as they can be and their sense of community is evident in events such as their annual “Raiders Respond” Day – an event comprised of many mini-projects that add up to a cleaner, greener, better Eden,” said Waste Management Public Sector Municipal Rep Mike DeClerck. This is the ninth year Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful have collaborated on community-based grant initiatives. During that time, Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful have awarded more than $1.3 mil-lion in grant monies to affiliates and partners in support of more than 205 community service projects and programs. Waste Management has supported Keep America Beau-tiful programs for many years, including as a sponsor of America Recycles Day and the Keep America Beautiful/Ad Council public service advertising campaign – “I Want To Be Recycled.”

Fairgrounds Breaks Ground on New Agriculture Education Component

“Little Hands on the Farm™” This August, the Erie County Agricultural Society will de-but Little Hands on the Farm™, an interactive exhibit that will further expand on the Society’s commitment to agricul-ture education with the support of Tops Friendly Markets LLC, one of WNY’s largest retailers. The permanent attrac-tion will debut to the public on August 12 to coincide with the opening day of the 176th Erie County Fair. Little Hands on the Farm™ is a 16,000 square foot kid-sized farm that will feature ten barns, a garden, and a peddle tractor track. Children will have the opportunity to travel throughout the farm and participate in various “chores” at each barn. With each completed activity kids will add farm products to a basket, which they will later sell at the Farm-ers Market for a Little Hands on the Farm™ “dollar”. The ending of this experience will allow kids to shop and spend their dollar inside the Tops Grocery Market where they can get a snack. The Tops Grocery Market will complete the loop in explaining to youths how food gets from farm to store. It is the goal of Little Hands on the Farm™ to educate chil-dren and their families on the work that is done on farms each and every day in an interactive and fun way. Under-standing the different components of agriculture and the importance of these components in daily life are primary lessons the Erie County Agricultural Society hopes to instill through their various agriculture education programs.

The Vietnam VetsThere was no fanfare of homecoming

For many a Vietnam VetBut in their mind of war

Horrid memories plague them yetMany using canes, walkers and wheelchairsBut very thankful- Because others lost moreEyesight, deafness and also missing limbs

Also the loss of many lives- Due to an unwanted warIn returning home and doing their best

As some longed to return to workBut aren't able- Due to existing impossibilities

During civilian days at work they wouldn't shirkPlease feel proud of "All" our fighting forces

No matter of what WarAnd practice equal opportunities for those

As they have received before-Fireside Poetry by

NOW HERE’S A TIPBy JoAnn Derson

* “Planning a new roof? Choose a light color for cooling benefi ts. Also check with your home-insurance company to see what dis-counts it might offer for dif-ferent styles or options, like upgraded hurricane clips or fi re retardant materials.” -- R.E.W. in Tennessee

* Cut a cord of fi rewood in the spring, and cure it your-self. Store it away from the house and properly care for the wood by stacking it where it will have access to the sun and wind to dry it. Let it season for six months or longer, and you’ll have fi rewood ready when the temperatures drop again.

* “If you’re melting choc-

olate in your microwave, do yourself a favor: Line the bowl with wax paper or parchment paper. The choc-olate is still easy to stir, but when you take it out, you can scrape all the chocolate off the paper so that none is wasted!” -- A.A. in Florida

* Shopping for bagged fro-zen vegetables? Give them the squeeze test: If the veg-etables feel hard and solid, they have thawed and re-frozen. Choose another bag.

* Keep musty smells out of your linen closet by stashing a box of baking soda on one of the shelves, just as you would in the kitchen.

* “Place a bit of clear tape

over the spot where you aregoing to drive in a nail to prevent the nail from crack-ing drywall. It will go rightin. Also, if you’re nailinginto wood, drag your nailthrough some soap (bar soapis fi ne) before striking it. This does the same thing --it will keep the wood fromsplitting. You can even keepa travel-size bar of soap inyour nail apron for just thispurpose.” -- P.K. in NewJersey

On Thursday, May 7, 2015 Rural Transit Service volun-teers, staff members and elected officials gathered to intro-duce the new Rural Transit Service vans. One van will ser-vice Collins, North Collins and Gowanda a second van will service Holland and Sardinia. Transportation has become a serious problem for many citizens in Erie County. As families move away and inde-pendence becomes a greater challenge for seniors and the increasing transportation costs the need for Rural Transit Service arises. Rural Transit Service allows independence, companionship, and security to our riders. Rural Transit Service is a non-profit transportation service for the elderly, disabled and low/moderate income residents of rural Erie County. Transportation is provided for medi-cal appointments, grocery shopping, banking and personal business trips, etc. with medical taking priority. Client reg-istration is as simple as a phone call to your local dispatch site. Since I cannot drive and live alone, I would have difficulty in shopping and keeping medical appointments. I would be lost without the van. Thank you so much,” voiced a client. Rural Transit Service is asking anyone who hears about their service to get the word out to all of those eligible - “We want everyone eligible to use our ser-vice.” But Rural Transit needs volunteers who are willing to give back to their community! Since Rural Transit Service is entirely volunteer driven we are looking for all kinds of dedicated volunteers -drivers, dispatchers and driver aides Our volunteers can work four or eight hour shifts one day a week between 8AM and 4PM Monday through Friday. We also need volunteers who can help seasonally or would like to be back-up volunteers. We are currently in need of volunteers in the Southtowns areas.

* “If you’re melting choc-

olate in your microwave, do yourself a favor: Line the bowl with wax paper or parchment paper.

Boys and Girls Club Awards Ceremony

At the end of each school year, the B&G Club recognizes the members who have been involved in the different activi-ties, and have shown good character. This year awards such as “Arts & Crafts Enthusiasts”, “Club Spirit” or even the “future architects” were given to the people who dedicate their time to creating things (especially Legos!). The high-est award given out is the Member of the Year award. This year Jenna Coventry won for the Female Member of the Year and Michael Teoro Jr. one for the Male Member of the Year. These members are involved in many aspects of Club activi-ties, but most importantly, they show kindness, leadership, and respect in all areas of their lives. Great Job, Jenna and Michael! Memorial Day was en-acted to memorialize the soldiers who lost their life in the American Civil War and later was expanded to honor the soldiers who bravely served our nation and fought and died in all American wars. These courageous men and women, so different in heritage and background, shared the common bonds and goals of the armed forc-es - duty and sacrifice. Far too often, we take for grant-ed the many freedoms we enjoy as American citizens that were paid for with the lives of others. The Memorial Holiday of-fers a chance to take a mo-ment and recognize those

who are no longer with us, particularly those who have given their lives to our na-tion while serving in Amer-ica's Armed Forces. Since our country's fight for inde-pendence in 1775, almost two million American ser-vice members have lost their lives. Today, servicemen and women continue to fight for our freedoms throughout the world. Memorial Day is a time set aside to honor Americans who have served our country and paid the ul-timate sacrifice in protecting our freedoms. Events are planned throughout Erie County that celebrates the heroism and courage of these men and

women who died in the line of duty. Before attending family parties, picnics, and other holiday celebrations I ask all Erie County residents to take time from your busy day to attend a parade or memorial service honoring the veterans we have lost. Displaying an American Flag or simply placing a flower on a veteran's gravesite offers a special dedication to those who greatly deserve it. The sacrifice of all our vet-erans earns a special remem-brance for the loss of our fellow countrymen during wartime. Lee Greenwood ap-propriately sang, "I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I free. And

I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me." The Erie County Clerk's Office pays tribute to our Veterans 365 days a year through the "Thank-A-Vet" Discount Card Program. This complementary pro-gram is a way to recognize the veterans in our com-munity for their honorable service. To learn more about the Clerk's "Thank-A-Vet" Program please call 858-4737 or visit www.erie.gov/clerk/thankavet<http://www.erie.gov/clerk/thanka-vet>.
