The Troutbeck experience

The gateway to the upstate cultural and creative corridor, Troutbeck - re-envisioned and carefully updated in 2017 – is again what it was to so many before us: inspiration, respite, restoration, folly, community, nature and nurture – carrying forward its 250-year legacy of hospitality.

Historic details remain amongst contemporary updates and antique furnishings - as though collected over generations. And, now, in the hands of a new generation, the house, grounds and services all reflect a certain ease, promoting a social and relaxed atmosphere whilst achieving a high standard of luxury.

515 Leedsville Road — Amenia, New York 12501 — + 1 (845) 789 1555 — www.troutbeck.com

Troutbeck has served as an enchanting private estate, country Inn and tavern since 1765 and has, for centuries, been a favored retreat of distinguished guests important in the arts, letters, matters of policy and social justice. During the time of the estate’s first owners, the Benton Family, it played frequent host to Mark Twain, Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson and the naturalist, John Burroughs.

Colonel Joel Spingarn (1875 – 1939) and his wife Amy bought the estate in the early 1900’s and continued in the tradition. Spingarn, a co-founder of publisher Harcourt, Brace & Co. was considered to be among the most brilliant of American literary minds of his time, attracting the likes of Sinclair Lewis (America’s first Nobel laureate in literature), Ernest Hemingway, and Lewis Mumford. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall was a lifelong friend. President Theodore Roosevelt was a frequent visitor to Troutbeck. Spingarn, co-founded the Bull Moose Party alongside then Governor Roosevelt – America’s first Progressive political party.

Joel and Amy were active in the Civil Rights movement and twice hosted two critical meetings of the NAACP at Troutbeck - known today as the Amenia Conferences of 1916 and 1933. Spingarn established the Spingarn Medal, the NAACP’s highest honor, awarded annually. Past recipients include Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Duke Ellington, General Colin Powell and Maya Angelou, to name a few.

“No feudal continuity of blood, but a democratic continuity of spirit binds together the families that have occupied Troutbeck.” —L. Mumford

Turns out you’ve stumbled onto the largest ballroom on a full service estate property between Connecticut and the Hudson River. Not your grandmothers ballroom, mind you, ours is beautifully lit from 6 locally made, copper and iron chandeliers, painted in soft hues and features a rather sizeable gas fireplace.

The ballroom is situated overlooking the Dunham Creek, has four French doors which open out onto either a large stone patio or a lawn. Both the patio and lawn can be tented for larger scale events. The Ballroom Lawn can fit a 1,800 square foot tent (30’ x 60’) At 3,500 square feet, The Ballroom has capacity for 250, seated, or up to 350 in total. A wireless digital projector is available. The Bar at the Ballroom is reclaimed from a New York City pub, ebonized and softly lit. Everyone looks great at this bar. The Ballroom is serviced by separate Men’s and Women’s washrooms. The Ballroom is fully ADA accessible.

The gateway to the upstate cultural and creative corridor, the re-envisioned and carefully updated Troutbeck is again what it was to so many before us: inspiration, respite, restoration, folly, community, nature and nurture – carrying forward its 250-year legacy of hospitality. Historic details remain amongst contemporary updates, found and antique furnishings - as though collected over generations. And, now, in the hands of a new generation, the house, grounds and services all reflect a certain ease, promoting a social and relaxed atmosphere whilst achieving a high standard of luxury.

Troutbeck has always been a convening place. Beloved by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, John Burroughs, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemmingway, Gov. Teddy Roosevelt and Lewis Mumford, amongst others. It was central to the civil liberties movement, frequented by Sinclair Lewis, W.E.B Du Bois, Thurgood Marshall and Langston Hughes. Troutbeck is a living house that values its history and looks to the future, reoriented for how we live, work, relax and socialize today.

Situated on 45 bucolic acres, a two-hour drive from Manhattan, or, from Grand Central Terminal via MetroNorth rail to Wassaic, NY - thirteen times per day. Escape the city with ease for the night and return undetected by morning. Begin or end your tour of New
