  • Project Background

    Portland is a multi-modal community, enjoying high quality regional bus, rail, ferry, and airline services.

    For practical reasons, Portlands transportation hubs are located on the periphery of the urban core, separated from key destinations and from one another.

    Multi-modal trips are complicated by the geographic separation of hubs and make car-free living / tourism more difficult. Example: seasonal island visitors arriving by plane Example: Maine residents flying from Portland, wishing to leave

    their cars at home

    Project aims to identify several alternatives to link the citys transportation hubs, and provide analysis on the relative strengths of each.

    Portland International Jetport Served by five major airlines Offers approximately 25 departures per day in winter / 35 in

    summer to 10 major hubs 48,000 boardings per month (winter) / up to 96,000 in summer Parking

    Short term hourly: $2 per hour Long term garage: $12 daily

    Ground Transportation Courtesy shuttles available to airport hotels: $5 (tip) Taxi / UBER service to METRO Pulse: $20 / $15 Metro Transit Route 5 to METRO Pulse: $1.50

    Cove, Long Island, Chebeague, and Cliff Islands Ridership fluctuates seasonally:

    Schedules also fluctuate seasonally: Peaks Island: 14 to 16 trips per day Down Bay (all other islands): 4 to 6 trips per day

    No long-term parking available at Ferry Terminal Municipal parking available nearby, but fills up fast in summer
