This manual will help users get the most out of the Beginners Guide to Operapresentation.
Target Learners and Purpose
My target audience is adult learners who want to know about Opera. Many adults are vaguely
familiar with opera but may want more information. This project was designed to provide
interested learners the opportunity to gain some basic knowledge of opera in an easy-going andfun setting. The activity is designed so uses can navigate freely throughout the entire presentation
according to their interests. Learners can expect to spend about an hour or two viewing all of the
videos and linked sites.

Objectives
Upon completion of this interactive presentation learners should be able to:
1. Identify common terms used in opera such a Leitmotif; Libretto; Aria; Virtuoso; Singspiel;Opera buffa; Valkyrie; and Coloratura.
2. Identify one example of Coloratura. One of the most well-known examples is the role of the
Queen of the Night from Mozarts opera The Magic Flute.

3. Identify different vocal parts sung such as Baritone; Bass; Tenor; Mezzo-soprano; and
Soprano.

4. Identify at least two major operas such a The Marriage of Figaro; The Magic Flute; The Ring
of the Nibelung; Carmen; The Barber of Seville; La Cenerentola; and Cossi Fan Tutti.
5. Identify at least two important opera composers such as Mozart; Rossini; Wagner; and Bizet.

Equipment Needed
Hardware
Computer with adequate processor speed and RAM to run a web-hosted Flash presentation;audio card and speaker; internet connection; monitor, mouse, keyboard.
Software
Flash player 11.2 or higher JavaScript enabled web-browser.
Getting Started
Network Access
Once the user is connected to the internet he or she can access the program from
http://www.tarapeters.name/511/511index.html.
CD Access
The program is not available on CD.
Program startup procedure
The program will start immediately and will provide a brief description of the program and the
learning objectives. The user is free to continue to watch the opening scene or he or she can
access any of the modules in any order. However, users may want to view the orientation module
first to learn about site navigation conventions and other basic information.

Running of the Courseware
Time to Complete the Courseware
This will depend on whether or not the user wants to view all of the available modules or not.
Each module should take approximately 5-10 minutes, and there are 7 modules: Home;
Orientation; Mozart; Rossini; Bizet; Wagner and Fun. The total time could be as little as 30
minutes or as much as an hour or more depending on the user.
User Interface Components
Each module has the same navigation bar across the top of the screen so no matter where a use is
in the program they can easily return to any other module at will. To exit the program, simply
close the browser page.
Ending the program
To exit the program, simply close the browser page.

Trouble Shooting
The most common source of technical difficulties with Flash Projects is out of date flash
software. If the user experiences problems loading or viewing the project he or she can download
a free Flash update athttp://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/.
**Remember to uncheck the Optional Offer box in the middle of the screen unless you truly
want to download a McAfee product.
If users need to update Java they should navigate tohttps://www.java.com/en/download/.
