Volume 35 / No. 2 April-June 2015 It’s been a busy winter and spring for NPR News -- especially when it comes to breaking news from NPR reporters covering stories here at home and overseas. So far this year, there has been extensive reporting on the spread of Isis in Iraq and Syria, the shooting at Charlie Hebdo headquarters in Paris, and the ongoing conflict in the Ukraine. Each report requires funding; Spokane Public Radio pays its share of costs to NPR and we ask listeners to donate their share to SPR. But how much does NPR need to continue serving news? NPR of course pays for staff -- professional reporters who take the time to understand a story and how to convey that to the world, plus editors and producers to help get the information on the air. For example, to cover the fallout from the shooting in Ferguson, NPR paid local Missouri reporters almost $8,950 for use of their stories between October and mid-February, and an additional $6,500 to bring NPR reporters to the area. During that same time period, NPR spent $500,000 covering education issues, including the brain’s processes while teaching and learning, and how the U.S. military assists children of servicemen and women. NPR News Investigations has been busy producing series. Reporter Joe Shapiro continued to bring us stories about the poor paying the price of rising court fees in his series “Guilty and Charged.” Last year, Howard Berkes’s series on Grain How Much Does It Cost to Cover the News? 2. Go online to spokanepublicradio.org/sustaining-membership to print out the Sustaining Membership Authorization Form. Mail it, along with a voided check, to the offices at 2319 N. Monroe St, Spokane, WA 99205.

3. Sit back and relax. Your gift will automatically be deducted from your bank account each month AND automatically renew annually until you tell us to stop.

If your life changes, you can always choose to increase, decrease, or suspend your monthly gift. All you have to do is call the station at (509) 328-5729 or send an email to [email protected]. It’s that easy!

As It Happens features journalist Carol Off’s interviews with newsmakers from around the globe. Tune in KSFC weekdays at 8 p.m. for this talk show from the CBC.

Concerts from the Library of Congress returns to KPBX Thursdays 7 p.m. with host Bill McGlaughlin.

Bin Deaths led to an Illinois jury awarding nearly $17 million in the deaths of two teenagers and the entrapment of a third in grain bin accidents. The U.S. Army changed guidelines on PTSD Purple Heart awards in part due to an NPR investigation, reported on by Daniel Zwerdling in his piece, “Once Denied A Purple Heart, A Soldier Gets Her Medal.” International news, which often has impacts on current

events at home, comes with a larger price. NPR provides two kinds of body armor for reporters in

hostile environments -- one to wear under the clothes, and a higher-level protection to wear outside of clothes. These suits cost up to $1300. Helmets are an additional $500, and each reporter or correspondent needs this.

Each person heading to Afghhanistan or Pakistan for NPR News goes through Hostile Environment Training, costing about $6,000 per person. Many times, the reporters’ only link to the outside world is a satellite phone. Each

phone kit costs $5,500. Office leases, translators, fixers and security details are all part of the cost of

gathering worldwide news, and the context SPR listeners rely on. Listeners help support 18 NPR news bureaus across the world and 18 domestic

news bureaus in the United States. Our International Bureaus include Dakar, Mexico City, Beijing, New Delhi, Shanghai, Islamabad, Berlin, London, Moscow, Rome, Cairo, Istanbul, Jerusalem, Kabul, Nairobi, Sao Paulo, Beirut and a new bureau in Seoul, South Korea. A Pew Research Center survey last year showed that NPR News is still one of

the most-trusted sources of news. While headlines seem to be everywhere online (including NPR’s own mobile app), NPR News provides context.

Ira Flatow engages listeners and scientists in conversation each Friday from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. during Science Friday on KSFC.

Listeners help support 18 NPR news bureaus across the world and 18 domestic news bureaus in the United States.

Short Nights of the Shadow Caster is Timothy Egan’s biography of Edward Curtis and his compelling and controvercial photographs of Native Americans. Tune in to The Bookshelf beginning Monday, April 27, read by Susan Creed.

NPR News Costs Continued from Front

It’s been a busy winter and spring for NPR News -- especially when it comes to breaking news from NPR reporters covering stories here at home and overseas. So far this year, there has been extensive reporting on the spread of Isis in Iraq

and Syria, the shooting at Charlie Hebdo headquarters in Paris, and the ongoing conflict in the Ukraine. Each report requires funding; Spokane Public Radio pays its share of costs to NPR and we ask listeners to donate their share to SPR. But how much does NPR need to continue serving news?NPR of course pays for staff --

professional reporters who take the time to understand a story and how to convey that to the world, plus editors and producers to help get the information on the air. For example, to cover the fallout from the shooting in Ferguson, NPR paid local Missouri reporters almost $8,950 for use of their stories between October and mid-February, and an additional $6,500 to bring NPR reporters to the area. During that same time period, NPR spent $500,000 covering education issues,

including the brain’s processes while teaching and learning, and how the U.S. military assists children of servicemen and women. NPR News Investigations has been busy producing series. Reporter Joe Shapiro

continued to bring us stories about the poor paying the price of rising court fees in his series “Guilty and Charged.” Last year, Howard Berkes’s series on Grain
