How to lose a knockout eventby Henry Shevitz

On today’s hand, I was on the wrong end of a 22-IMPswing, which was instrumental in my team losing the match inthe final of the Monday-Tuesday KO team event. Please coverthe EW hands before reading the remainder of this article.

The bidding contained a light Jacoby 2NT response, fol-lowed by Mary’s signoff, when she learned of my singletonspade.

However, with my 4-loser hand, and knowing we had 9trumps, I inquired about aces, and bid the slam when sheshowed one. The opening lead of the ♠A was followed byanother spade, unsuccessfully finessed, and trumped.

Looking at both the NS hands, obviously the slam is cold ifhearts split 2-2. I cashed the ace and king, learning of the 3-split, and gathered my thoughts.

The choices are (1) Finesse for the ♣Q, a 50% bet; (2)Finesse for the ♦Q, also 50%; and (3) Ruff one diamond lowand the 4th diamond high, discarding the ♣T on the ♠K.

The odds of East having at least 3 diamonds are about 82%,so I took the 3rd line of play. Furthermore, when East holds only2 diamonds, but one of them is the queen, the slam will stillmake.

Please note that, given the existing layout, it is impossibleto ruff both diamonds high, since the 9 of trumps will take atrick. Unfortunately, the 3rd round of diamonds was overtrumpedby East with the 9, and I was set 1.

The slam was not bid at the other table, so had I taken line(1), we would have gained 11 IMPS instead of losing 11, and theoutcome of the match would have been in our favor.
