5 Tips When Riding Cebu Jeepneys
Riding Cebu jeeps is not really an easy feat, especially fornewbies to the city and newbies to this form of public transport. Thingsmay get confusing and a lot could go horribly wrong! Maybe not
“horribly”, but still, it could get ery frustrating and inconenient.
Thus this is a short guide for all of you who are new to the cityriding the jeepney tourists who are out to e"perience the real Cebuand een pa#rich $ids with no cars with not so rich friends. Mahal $ayamag#ta"i!
1. The Pick Up
%eeps hae their routes painted on its sides, and there are eenplacards of such hanging in the front windshield. Ride the jeep where
you want to go which are within those routes. &ut when in doubt, justas$ the drier or the “$ondu$tor” 'the jeep conductor( if the jeeppasses your destination.
)lthough the law designates proper jeepney stops, jeeps that arein#need would stop at any sidewal$ or corner where there is a potentialpassenger. &ut as much as possible, stic$ to the jeepney stops just tobe safe. Though een seasoned jeepney riders, li$e yours truly, don*t$now where those stops are.
%ust raise your hand, pointing at your desired jeep to call its
attention. +f a wrong jeep stops for you, just nod your head rigorouslyfrom side#to#side to signal the jeep your not interested. %ust li$e howyour crush nodded their heads at you to signal their not interestedeither. 'cries in corner(
2. The Lazy Passenger
+f you*re li$e me, + aoid as much + can to pass other peoplesfare. -o if we are $indred spirits, in order to aoid this, either sit at thefarthest bac$ part of the jeep, away from the drier. r if there is a$ondu$tor who collects the fares, sit as far away from the $ondu$tor as
well. r just sit in the front seat, if aailable. + guarantee /001e2ectiity.
3. The Drp !"
3hen wanting to depart from the jeep, there are 4 easy ways tosignal the drier. 3hich one you*ll follow, + will leae to you to decide.

5irst is the #Lugar $ang%. “6ugar lang” is the Cebuanocounterpart of “para po”. -aying so to the drier or $ondu$tor is afailsafe way to signify your wanting to depart the jeep. 7oweer if thedrier is deaf or pretends to be deaf then this may not be e2ectie in
your situation.
-o we go to number 8, the #&nck &nck &nck%. &anging onthe metal holding pole in the jeep with a coin or $noc$ing on the jeepswooden roof is also an e2ectie means to get the drier*s attention tostop. “9noc$ 9noc$ 9noc$” because three taps should be enough forany drier. +f the drier is again really deaf “9noc$ " /000” should gettheir attention.
6astly, if / and 8 were not e2ectie then a combination of bothcould proe more e2ectie for you. +f the drier:$ondu$tor still does not
notice you because they are apparently in a coma, + thin$ it would bebest if you just jump out of the jeepney ;co< it will surely crash soon.9idding! %ust do “='9noc$ > 6ugar lang( " /million?” or cry u' ' 'hep$ice if still not e2ectie.
)gain, Cebu jeeps don*t usually follow jeepney stops 'unless ifthere are C+TMs around( so ta$e your chances and as$ to be droppedo2 when nearest your stop.

3e all $now the dangers of riding public transport, especially atnight or when passing by secluded areas. -o just to be safe, $eep youreyes open for any possible danger.
) common scheme of jeepney pic$poc$ets or hold#uppers iswhere they hae big bags with them, usually empty or has littlecontents, placed in front of their body where their hands are clearlybehind the bags in order to hide their hands while they try to go for thebelongings of those beside them. +t is best to $eep away from thesepeople inside the jeep, or simple depart from the jeep altogether.
)nother scheme they use is the “hulog#piso modus” or wheresomeone “accidentally” let#goes of their change and has them fall onthe Aoor. &eing good#natured that we are, our primary instinct is tohelp the person out, pic$ing up the coins. 6ittle do we $now, becauseof us bending down, it opens up our poc$ets and dierts our attention, allowing them to ta$e the contents of our poc$ets.

There are other schemes but these are the two most commonones. &eware doesn*t mean be afraid, just be aware. B(
. The ,ea'ing *rrange-en'
The last tip + hae is where you should sit on your ne"t jeepneyride. )side from the beneDts of not haing to pass other peoples* fares, where you would sit inside the jeepney would also a2ect the entiree"perience of the ride.
3hen the sun is out and scorching, it would be best to sit where, during most of the ride, the angle of the sun is in the opposite side. +mean who would want sweat li$e a pig and get tan line while riding a jeepE
&ut if you*re li$e me, + don*t care where the sun may be. Fo, +
haen*t lost my mind. The reason is that + care for something morethan the heat, and that*s my hair. +f you styled your hair to go to aspeciDc direction, it would be best, in order to maintain that style, to siton the side of the jeep where the air would be Aowing the samedirection as your hair, instead of opposing it, which would result to areally bad hair day!
+n case of rain, don*t sit near the e"it of the jeep, not only doesrain water get in, passengers boarding, who were out in the rain wouldsplash those nearest to where they would come in. -o just don*t.
6astly, pic your seatmates well, sit beside someone clean andloo$s to hae had a bath just today. This not only beneDts your nose, but also your entire loo$. )oiding yourself from other people*s sweatand the li$e, and maintaining your pleasant smell.
+f you happen to sit beside someone good loo$ing, then that*s just a bonus and not really necessary, anyway, it would be ery weird if you $eep staring a' 'he persn beside yu. &ut if thathands-ebeau'i/u$ person is sitting across from you, who careswho your sitting beside, or the sun or the rain0 + $now + won*t!
