Peter has dealt with some great truths so far in his letter. He begins with Jesus Christ and a believer’s faith in Him. He reminds us that our faith will be tried. There will be trials, temptations, and persecutions. The result of these trials is that our faith “might be found unto the praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.” (1:7) Do you fret and worry about the situation today? It seems that the world is in control and God is loosing out. It feels like each day there is more resistance to Christ, the Bible, and Christianity as a whole. What are we to do? We must remember that God knows what is going on and He is in full control of our situation. There is nothing new under the sun. History constantly repeats itself. Israel and the church have been in far greater hard times than we are experiencing today. God has sent revival and delivered His people miraculously throughout history. God is more than able! What should we do then? Live with hope. Hope until the end. We should fix our minds and hearts on Jesus Christ and what we have in Him. Read I Peter 2:3-10. 5 The Chief Corner Stone 5 Memory Verse- I Peter 2:9a “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people.” Your Thoughts Think About It: God is not blind to our situation & is in full control. The Bible Says That All Men Are Sinners. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory to God.” (Romans 3:23). God’s Word Also Says That Sin Must Be Paid For. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). THE BIBLE WAY TO HEAVEN

Realize That God Loves You. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16).

The Good News Is That Christ Paid for Our Sins. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8).

We Must Personally Pray and Receive Christ by Faith as Our Personal Saviour. The Bible Says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13).

The Bible refers to Jesus Christ multiple times as the chief corner stone. It describes this chief corner stone as a living stone. Think of it. Jesus Christ is just as alive today as He was 2,000 years ago when he walked on the earth. He is seated on the right hand of the Father in heaven and lives within a believer. Don’t think of Him as someone who lived long ago. Dwell on the fact that He lives today. The Bible tells us that this living stone was disallowed of men. Disallowed means that one is rejected after examination and testing of one’s qualifications for an office.

He was rejected by the very ones who were looking for Him. Read Isaiah 53:1-7. Man’s opinion or actions did not change who Jesus Christ is. The Bible states that He is the chief corner stone. This stone begins the foundation of a building. Everything is built upon it.

Jesus Christ is the beginning and foundation of the Christian faith. Read Isaiah 28:16 and Psalm 118:22-23. Regardless of what man disallowed, God chose Him and He is precious to the Father. Peter says, “unto you therefore which believe he is precious.” Jesus Christ is our only hope in this evil world. Look what the Bible says Jesus Christ is to those who don’t believe. He is a stone of stumbling. People tripped right over Him. The religious leaders who longed for their messiah stared Him in the face, listened, and watched Him yet tripped over Him. He is a rock of offense. This means a trigger of a trap where the bait is placed. These people tripped and feel on the trigger and trapped their minds with their own desires. They stumbled over the very Word they studied.

Peter gives a great description of the Christian’s position in this world in verse nine. They are a chosen people. This means they are selected through careful thought and deliberation. They are a holy nation which means they are a people set apart to and for God. Peter says the believers are a peculiar people. This means they are purchased or redeemed to God in a unique manner. Peter is placing emphasis on God’s redeeming plan from 1:18-22. The christian’s purpose is to “shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” Think of it. No matter what goes on God is in control.

Peter now compares believers to the living stone calling them lively stones. Believers are to be Him on earth. We are to be “little Christs” running all over the earth. Believers make up a spiritual house. It is not a physical building. You can burn down a church building but you still have the church. You can persecute, oppress, kill, and scatter believers but you still have the church. Where is the temple of God today? It is within a believer, where God abides. Peter goes on to describe these lively stones. They are a holy priesthood. They are to render service to Him. They offer up prayer which is the spiritual sacrifices spoke of. They are to praise, worship, and serve in their specific job God has called them to. These lively stones will not be confounded. They will withstand tyranny and harsh opposition.
