Middle School Science with Mrs. Weiss

Fifth Grade: During our Solar System unit, to show how vast our Solar System is and how awesome God is, we created a scale model of our Solar System using bathroom tissue and planet print-outs.

Students paired up for each planet on our scale model. Each pair counted the number of sheets from the sun. They were amazed to see how far apart the planets were.

Eighth Grade: I am always look-ing for new projects to incorporate within my classroom. I found a pro-ject called “Bloom’s Ball” based on learning strategies. I adapted the project from a literature project to a science project. Instead of a tradi-tional test for our Periodic Table and Chemistry unit, each student com-

pleted a project based on Blooms’ Taxonomy. Each of the 12 questions are based on Knowledge, Understanding, Ap-plication, Analyze, Evaluate and Create.

It was a fun way for students to show what they learned through-

out this unit. They were also able show their creative side.

Visit our website www.saintacs.com

If you are a due to graduate high school shortly, please join us at the 10:00 am Mass on May 25th when we will acknowledge our St. Anthony Graduating Class, and High School Graduates from the parish with a spe-cial blessing.

You are welcome to wear your cap and gown to this Mass.

Afterward, there will be a cake and coffee reception in the Faith Devel-opment Center.

We keep all graduates in our prayers as you celebrate your accomplish-ments and listen and follow where God is leading you next.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

Matthew 7:7

When we see this scripture verse quoted, it is often in the con-text of our prayers to God, our ask of Him. As a community of faith-filled, and faithful Catholic Christians, perhaps our prayers can and should be answered by asking each other?

Our new office and gathering spaces

You may recall that we announced a while ago that we would be converting the house on the west side of the entrance to our campus into staff offices.

The three office spaces are almost ready. One office will be for our new Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, Richard Monteverde who starts work tomorrow, May 12th. Another office will be the home of Ministry Coordinator, Debbie Andre’, and the third office will house our future Out-reach office.

You may have seen the construction work that has been going on in at this building over the last number of weeks. Bob Benvissuto, a parishioner who has done so much already in our parish, has once again stepped up and has done a mag-nificent job of rebuilding the deck at the rear of this property. This deck now provides safe and sturdy access to the building, including a wheelchair ramp. Bob has been the answer to our prayer many times in the history of this parish, and his work, in its consistency, and in the freedom with which it is given is part of Bob’s ongoing prayer in offering his time and talent. We are also grateful to the small number of parishioners who have assisted Bob. We continue to pray that more parishioners hear and answer the call to help with these types of projects.

We are thrilled to share the exciting news with you that not only will this building hold these offices, but it will be a gath-ering space called “Discipleship Café’ and our vision is that this will be a place for hospitality after Mass, where instead of rushing off to Starbucks or Dunkin’ to buy your coffee, that you will come here and buy your ‘cup of joe’ instead. Here you will be able to meet other parishioners in our inside café area, and outside on the newly constructed deck.

We are blessed to have the assistance of another parishioner who is skilled in space planning for exactly these types of environments and she will be assisting us, giving her time and talent in prayer, as we get ready to open Discipleship Café.

Youth, and Young Adult gathering space

At other times, this facility will be used by Richard Monte-verde as he moves forward to grow our Youth and Young Adult Ministries. Watch out for news from Richard on how you can get involved. The space will be used as an area to mingle, and of course to pray and study our faith.

So what is our ask?

We have heard another scripture verse often quoted: “Without a vision, the people will perish” Proverbs 29:18

The vision for St. Anthony Parish is that we continue to grow as a vibrant community with active disciples span-ning each generation. In order to foster greater connection between the generations at our parish, and to create an en-vironment conducive to genuine fellowship and growth as disciples, we need several practical items to complete the conversion of this building for the purposes described. Without your active commitment, and financial support, this vision will not be realized.

So that we can create an environment that you will want to visit, instead of other coffee shops, we are asking for monetary donations to cover the cost of the following:

Refrigerator, Built-in Dishwasher, Coffee Machines, Computers, Meeting/Gathering Furniture, Two Large Screen Flat Panel TVs (to be wall mounted), Bathroom remodel, Light Fixtures and Wall Art.

Be the answer to prayer!

We are asking you to prayerfully and carefully consider how you can make a big difference in the community life of this parish by making a donation significant enough to help us purchase one or more of these items. Be the answer to many prayers, those of our Pastor and Pastoral Team, but most importantly, be the answer to the prayers of our Youth, our Young Adults, our Young Families, our Single Parishioners, our Retirees, our Widowed Parishion-ers. Answer their prayers for a place where they can come, share time together, connect with each other, build mean-ingful relationships, and grow as disciples.

To make a financial donation

You can donate online via our website (select the online giving tab.) You can also make a donation by placing your contribution in an envelope marked Discipleship Café, and place it in the collection basket, or you may visit the Parish Office and make your donation in person. Office Hours are Sunday: 9:00am-12:00pm; Mon-Thurs: 9:30am-5:00pm

Discipleship Café

Extending hospitality at St. Anthony Parish, helping

us to Love God, Love Others and Make Disciples.

“Of course, all of us are called to mature in our work as evangelizers. We want to have better training, a deepening love and a clearer witness to the Gospel. In this sense, we ought to let others be constantly evangelizing us. But this does not mean that we should postpone the evangelizing mission; rather, each of us should find ways to communicate Jesus wher-ever we are. All of us are called to offer others an explicit witness to the saving love of the Lord, who despite our imper-fections offers us his closeness, his word and his strength, and gives meaning to our lives.” ~Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium. Read it at Vatican.va/evangelii-gaudium/en/

Fifth Sunday of Easter "I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be." Now this is something to look forward to: being where Jesus is, in heaven. What could be more satisfying, more beautiful, more perfect? Heaven is where we find the "fulfillment of the deepest human longings" (Catechism of the Catholic Church §1024). Our longing for love that doesn't fail, our longing for peace that doesn't end, our longing for happiness that doesn't fade away-all of this is awaiting us. Today, Jesus tells his disciples that he is going to "prepare a place" for them. We are his disciples too, and so we also have a spot in the "Father's house." But we need to make sure we know how to get there!

This is what Thomas the (doubting) Apostle asked about in today's Gospel: "How can we know the way?" Thomas wants to be sure about things. He is looking for a kind of spiritual roadmap to give him the confidence that he's on the right path. This is what we have in Jesus. He responds to Thomas' question with these words: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." In other words, Jesus is like an infallible heavenly GPS. He gets us where we want to go.

By heeding Christ's teachings and following his example, we can navigate through the many competing "ways" that vie for our attention. But more than just serving as a spiritual signpost, Jesus wants us to be in a real relationship with him. As he asks Philip today, "Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me?" If Jesus himself is the way, then it is only by truly knowing him that we will find our way to heaven where we will finally behold him face-to-face.© Liturgical Publications Inc

Calm amid the Storm By Melissa Musick Nussbaum

There’s a lot of talk about the New Evan-gelization. With my own writing online, I suppose I’m a part of it, too. But I wit-nessed some of the old evangelization on a train back in October, and I saw its power.

We boarded the train in Denver on the morning of the first snowstorm of the season. Summer floods had washed out rails in Glenwood Canyon, so we were going to have to take the Wyoming route west and north to California. Those rails are for freight trains, not passenger trains, and the ride is rocky.

As we got farther into Wyoming, the snowstorm became a blizzard. Passengers who had bought tickets expecting to see golden aspens on mountainsides saw nothing but cows huddled on the plains against the icy wind and blowing snow.

Some of the passengers had been in coach seats all the way from Chicago and even farther east. Their reward for the crowd-ing and discomfort was the promised scenery. People in the observation car looked tired and disappointed.

Among their number was a group of Mennonites who were riding from the East Coast to visit friends in Nevada. This was the last day of their long trip. Parents, grown daughters, one son-in-law and grandchildren, they had somehow made it several nights sleeping, or not, in the upright rows. We walked into the car from the sleeper section — which is to say, a different world — and settled in to watch the storm. Soon, we heard the Mennonites singing — hymns, mostly, many of the tunes familiar, and mostly in the German dialect of their sect. Some of the songs sounded like the kind of things we all grew up singing in the car, just in a

different language.

Sometimes they sang in harmony,

but there were only two basses, and one had to leave from time to time to chase a toddler. So, when there were parts it was often just two: thin, sweet sopranos, joined by a couple of the sisters taking the alto.

It wasn’t a polished performance, not like the kind in those 1930s movies where the bar car of the train is transformed by Bing Crosby bursting into song or Fred Astaire dancing on the tables. No one stood and announced, “A star is born!” Maybe the wonder is that few stood at all. People quieted, and listened. A peace fell over the car, a peace and a sense that we were witness to something every bit as won-drous as a mountain clad in golden trees.

There was another family traveling to the same station in Nevada as the large Men-nonite family. I never learned their names or heard their stories, but it was clear their problems had nothing to do with missing a scenic portion of the ride. The parents had two little boys for whom they had run out of patience long before reach-ing Wyoming. I soon began to think of them, unfairly perhaps, as the singing family and the screaming family. One of the little boys was playing with his moth-er’s cell phone. He dropped it somewhere in the car. She yelled at him. He cried. She yelled louder, cursing him. He cried harder. It was the cry of a child who

knows he’s “going to get it.” It was the cry of a child who’s learned to fear the people he should trust. My husband of-fered to use his phone to call her number and see if we could locate the phone that way. In the meantime, the Mennonite family had spread out, searching under seats and tables, looking everywhere for the lost phone. They moved calmly and spoke calmly and brought some of the harmony of their singing to their search-ing.

We never found the phone. And I’ve no doubt the parents could ill afford to re-place it.

We searched that train like the woman sweeping her house for the lost gold coin. We searched the train for the lost coin all the while suspecting the lost gold had nothing to do with the phone at all. We searched the train all the while suspecting that the lost gold was standing, sobbing under the barrage of adult anger, his slightly younger brother cowering against him.

The two families exited the train at the same time, but I watched them fearing they were headed for very different desti-nations. I watched them wishing the little boys could go with the singing family until their own had the chance to find a job, a house, grow up, settle down, dry out, whatever it was they so needed. But evangelists, I know, sow seeds. It is not always given them to watch the seeds sprout or to harvest the fruit. The little boys seemed sadly at home with a raised voice. Perhaps they will remember voices raised in song. Perhaps they will remem-ber those calm, even tones as the strangers in the strange clothing helped, or tried to, and offered their own peace to anyone who needed it. © Celebration Publications

Stewardship Prayer for May Loving Father,

During this Easter season,

we rejoice in your son,

who has renewed us

in freedom and joy

through the mystery

of his resurrection.

We have been called

to proclaim his Gospel;

not because we are good enough,

holy enough, or talented enough;

but because you wanted us to have

this gift and this responsibility.

Give us the courage to be faithful

to this call;

Help us make every day of our lives

an experience of Easter.

And keep us ever mindful

of our charge:

to go in peace to love and

serve the Lord;

that as stewards of your world;

we are empowered by the Holy Spirit

to transform it, bring it justice

and peace,

and offer it, in gratitude, back to you.

We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

We have an advertising opportunity for anyone in the parish who has their own business. Maybe you have been reluctant to advertise in our bulletin due to cost—this booklet offers different sized advertis-ing options at a more modest cost.

Quo Vadis Days

August 3-6

San Pedro This is a mini camp for young Catholic men (ages 13-18) to learn more about the priesthood, to deepen their faith, and to bet-ter discern God's call in their lives. Quo

Vadis Days is sponsored by the Diocese of Orlando Vocations Office to provide a time of fun, prayer, and talks to help you explore the Lord's call in your life. "Quo Vadis" is the Latin phrase for "Where are you go-ing?" Legend tells us that St. Peter asked Jesus this question on the out-skirts of Rome. And we know where Jesus went in response to His Fa-ther's will.

There will be priests, seminarians, and other young men like you gath-ered together for these days. Our activities will include prayer, sports, talks and discussions, such as the Father's will and how to know what God wants. Mass with Bishop Noonan is scheduled for August 6.

We hope that you will consider taking time to discern the Lord's will in your life with us at QVDays. It is a great opportunity to let the Lord speak to you and to spend time listening to Him.

The camp begins at 5 p.m. Sunday, August 3, and concludes at noon Wednesday, August 6, at San Pedro Spiritual Center; 2400 Dike Road; Winter Park, FL 32792. The cost per person is $110, which includes overnight accommodations, all meals, materials, and activities. Deadline to register is July 22, 2014. Registration is limited to 50 young men.

To register, please send your check of $110 payable to "Diocese of Or-lando" and consent forms to:

Diocesan Vocation Office, 50 E. Robinson St., Orlando, FL 32801.

Nun Run offers insight into religious life Catholic women, ages 18-35, with the desire to learn firsthand what life as a religious sister is all about are invited to participate in the Diocese of Or-lando's next "Nun Run," June 26-29. During this spirit-filled event, partici-pants will visit four religious communities -- the Sisters of St. Joseph in St. Augustine, as well as the Daughters of Charity, Sisters of Notre Dame and the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters, all in Jacksonville – to share in prayers, meals and stories of vocations.

"God poured out so many graces upon me on this trip," said Maggie Lee, speaking about the Nun Run she participated in last year. "He opened my heart and showed me so much about his plan for me. God showed me this weekend that to be fully alive, I need to be all embracing of his graces he has given me."

Sister of St. Joseph Kathleen Power, assistant director of Vocations, said the purpose of the Nun Run is to provide young women with a unique glimpse into the lives of a variety of communities of consecrated women religious. The event teaches women about the tradition of consecrated life in the Cath-olic Church, and also offers those discerning a religious life, the opportunity to search for the right community in which they feel comfortable.

Cost for the event is $75, which includes meals and transportation. Deadline to register is June 16. Contact Sr. Power, [email protected] or 407-246-4928.

Mon., May 19: Acts 14:5-18; John 14:21-26

Why are you doing this? We are of the same nature as you, human beings. Paul’s attempts to proclaim the good news almost had him killed in one city, and glorified like a god in another. We still have a tendency to demonize or idolize those who step forward to offer their talents or leadership. Our communities

work best, however, when we recognize and accept that we all have imperfections, and respect the fact that we have all been graced with gifts of value. We may feel our individual gifts are too small to offer, but Jesus calls us to offer them anyway. He assures us that all of our imperfect gifts will fit and work together into something far greater than we could ever offer on our own. Into your hands, O Lord, I offer my gifts, though they seem cracked and small.

Tues., May 20: Acts 14:19-28; John 14:27-31a

Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. The more stressed I feel, the less “prayerful” my prayer becomes. In my heart I may ask God for strength or guidance, but then my head proceeds to give God a recipe to follow to achieve my goals. Jesus encourages us to let go of our rigid agendas and to open our hearts and minds; to allow ourselves to become the instruments through which God can guide us in God’s goals. It is easy to pray with words. It is much harder to pray with trust. O Lord, quiet my mind and open my heart. Help me to let go and let God.

Wed., May 21: Acts 15:1-6; John 15:1-8

A branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine. While cleaning out a closet, I uncovered a box that was filled with old letters. I had kept them because they were written by people who had been significant in my life. I was saddened to discover that I no longer knew where many of these people were or who they had be-come. Any valuable relationship requires nurturing and a commitment to communication in order to survive. Is it any wonder that my relationship with God can feel distant at times, when I neglect it or feel I am too busy to engage in prayer with my full attention and whole heart? Forgive me, Lord, for the times I have not given our relationship the attention it deserves.

Thurs., May 22: Acts 15:7-21; John 15:9-11

[God] made no distinction between us and them. Much effort has been spent of late in the discussion of how we can renew and refill our churches. All kinds of bells and whistles have been proposed to entice people through the doors. Yet once people come, we often require them to negotiate hurdles and hoops before they are welcomed at our table or are fully included in the inner workings of our communities. We may no longer require adult circumcision as a means of acceptance into our faith, but many have found the current obstacles to their welcome equally painful. Teach us, O Lord, how to love and welcome those you have guided to our doors.

Fri., May 23: Acts 15:22-31; John 15:12-17

I no longer call you slaves. ... I have called you friends. Isn’t it funny how the same advice can be resented by a 15-year-old but be given serious consideration by a 30-year-old? It is a difference of experience and attitude. The same task can feel like a burden when it “must” be done, or a joy because we are “invited” to do it. Like any good parent, God places before us guidelines that can enrich our lives and the lives of those around us. Do we do the right thing because we fear God’s punishment, or because we are pleased and grateful for his loving presence in our lives? Whether we see ourselves as slave or friend is sometimes a matter of attitude and choice. With your help, O Lord, may I see that the responsibilities and obligations in my life need not always be onerous.

Sat., May 24 Acts 16:1-10; John 15:18-21

No slave is greater than his master. For many of us, our careers and social responsibilities are embedded in a secular world. There is the constant temptation to com-promise the values of our faith in order to gain worldly benefits. Today’s Gospel reminds us that if we adopt the values of the world, we will become slaves to them, for they will always change and increase in demand. If we make the values of God our priority, then even though the world may penalize our choices, our worth will be assured by a master whose love for us will never waver. In a world of shifting and unclear choices, O Lord, may we always choose you to be our master.

Next Sunday: May 25, 2014 Acts 8:5-8, 14-17;

Psalm 66:1-3, 4-5, 6-7, 16, 20; 1 Peter 3:15-18; John 14:15-21
