Dear valued customers,

5 Star Trees Ltd. would like to thank you, our valued customers, for your support during the 2016 season. 2016 was a difficult year for many Albertans. We will continue to sup-port our clients in whatever way possible, through these difficult economic times. Your success is of the utmost importance to us at 5 Star Trees Ltd, and we will continue to

work alongside you, understanding the many problems and challenges that we all face.

We are continuing to expand our collection of local seed and bud wood wherever possible,

which will ensure hardiness for our tough growing zone.

Our focus on our carbon footprint and towards protecting the environment has not waiv-ered. Composting and Zero Till practices are standards we maintain. New high efficient electrical pumps for irrigation, along with low volume drip irrigation, reduces our water consumption and environmental impact. 5 Star Trees Ltd. considers the environment in

every decision and step made.

5 Star Trees Ltd. is continuing with the Clean Plants Program, and are once again certi-

fied for the 2017 season.

With 325 certified acres in production, 5 Star Trees Ltd. Is considered a medium sized nursery, but with our production schedule and best growing practices, we will still bring you the newest and hardiest plants available on the market place. Our size also allows us

to give you more personal, hands on service, in a quicker manner.

We are located 20 minutes south of Calgary near Aldersyde, and are ideally situated for pickups and deliveries. We invite you to visit our facility, just give us a call ahead of

time, so we can ensure one of our knowledgeable staff is available to assist you!

Tree Delivery Service

We are placing emphasis on our seed source selection, to ensure hardiness for our trading area. For example, our American Elm seed is collected locally from the center of Calgary, and our Trembling Aspen seed source is gath-ered at high elevation, in Fernie, B.C. One of its unique traits, is that it leafs out later than the other seed sources. This makes it unaffected by late spring frosts, as has occurred the last few years. We have a great crop of White Spruce maturing, with the seed collected in Cochrane, Alberta. Also, our Limber Pine seed was collected in Crowsnest Pass, AB. We are working on expanding our seed provenance to ensure you get the hardiest plants possible.

Care Instructions For Newly Installed Trees

In order to keep your new trees alive and healthy, there is some mainte-nance involved. For the first 2 years, your tree will require water and nutri-ents, that you must supply. Every tree is different, and have their own spe-cific needs that should be researched before purchasing. Below are basic tips to encourage health and growth of your new tree:

During the warm months, you should be watering 2 or 3 times a week. If you have a water well around your tree, fill it with water, and allow to drain into the roots. If no water well is present, place your garden house a few feet from the trunk, and turn the water to a trickle for 15-25 minutes.

Most issues incurred with new trees are water related - either too much, or not enough. When in doubt, wait a few days after watering, and dig down about a foot deep, beside the rootball. The soil should feel moist to the touch - it should not feel hard and dry, nor sloppy and muddy. Hard, dry soil indicates you need to increase the water the plant is receiving. Sloppy, muddy soil indicates you need to decrease the water the plant is receiving.

If you have a newly installed irrigation system, or new sod that is seeing fre-quent water, keep an eye on your trees, as this is a circumstance that can cause your trees to drown.

Fertilizing is highly recommended in the spring. Do not fertilize trees in the fall, as this may promote more growth, and the tree may not shut down for winter. We advise you to use a 20-20-20 fertilizer, or a 10-52-10 root starter for any newly installed plant material. Please note that all fertilizers are different. Be sure to read and follow instructions regarding application.

In the fall, newly installed deciduous plant material will turn to their fall colors early, and newly installed coniferous plant material will experience some fall needle shed.

When the first few winter frosts occur, it is wise to stop watering. This is when the trees stop growing, and starts shutting down for winter.

When the ground starts to freeze, typically in late October or early Novem-ber, you should water your tree one last time. Leave your garden hose a foot or so away from the trunk, on a slow trickle for around half an hour. This will ensure the roots of the tree receive water for the winter.

If you have decided to install trees and shrubs on your property, you should be aware that newly planted trees & shrubs need to be wa-tered three times a week for the first few years until they are well established. This is the most important aspect of ensuring your tree’s survival. In the past we have had a large number of inquiries about the most efficient way to water 50 or more trees. We use drip irrigation in our nurseries and highly recommend it if you are watering trees that are spread over a large area. It is easy to install, basically maintenance free, no need to drain it for the winter, and does not require large vol-umes of water, allowing wells to easily supply it. It waters only the tree, hooks up to a garden hose, and is relatively inexpensive.

Emitters - 8 litre per hour $0.99 ea.

Garden Hose Adaptor $4.95 ea.

Drip Tube Roll - 1000 ft of 1/2” $250.00 ea.

During the month of May we offer potted trees for pickup or installation. We established a SHELTERBELT program in 1992. It has proven to be a cost effective and successful way of establishing a windbreak on your property. For 2017, we will once again be offering the following:

Height Size Tree Name $Pick-up $Installed

4-7ft. 2gal Branched Misc. Poplar $24.95 ea. $40.95 ea.

2-5ft. 2gal Branched Trembling Aspen $24.95 ea. $40.95 ea.

2-4ft. 2gal Common Caragana $15.99 ea. $31.99 ea.

2-4ft 5gal Common Caragana $19.99 ea. $35.99 ea.

The installed price includes the tree, delivery, & installation. In order to keep the above prices, there is a minimum order of 50 trees mix or match. Smaller orders may be placed and picked up, at regular book price
