Surface PreparationPRE-EVALUATION Pre-evaluation of the surface will determine the type of preparation required for the repairand refinish process. This step will also assist the technician in determining which refinishproducts to use for the repair to maximize productivity and achieve the desired finish. Before you begin any refinish work, you must inspect the surface area that you will bepainting.

WASHINGStart by thoroughly washing the old paint work with a mild detergent and water. This willensure the removal of dirt and other soluble contaminants that could become dislodgedand end up in your paint job. This procedure also helps you clearly determine the exactextent of the repair work that needs to be done. After washing, rinse the surface well toremove any soap residue. Wipe dry by using clean absorbent towels.

BODYWORK• Before any sanding, use wax, grease and silicone remover to remove any tar, wax, or

grease.• Grind away paint and primer in areas requiring body work.• Use power tools to get close when sanding body filler. Block sand by hand to finish

body work.• For best results always prime with our two component primers. Allow proper flash and

cure times to prevent shrinkage.• When priming over bodywork always use a guide coat so you can see any sand

scratches and detect high and low spots in your work.• Final sand primer with nothing coarser than 400 grit wet or 320 grit dry.

SANDINGBefore sanding the surface, use wax & grease remover to ensure the removal of any contaminants that could cause problems in your paint job by sanding them into the oldfinish. When starting most sanding operations, the use of a DA sander is the fastest method forthe removal of surface rust and loose damaged paint. The entire panel or vehicle shouldbe sanded before applying primer. Spot repairs should be feathered out by block sandingfor best results. Sand beyond the feathered area to insure good adhesion of primer filler. A proper featheredge should have a gradual taper that cannot be felt when moving yourhand over it. Once sanding is complete, the surface must be free from dust. After dry sanding, cleanwith compressed air and wipe with a tack rag. When wet sanding, rinse of with clean waterand wipe dry, used compressed air to blow out seams and edges.

PrimersA paint job can only be as good as the prepared substrate underneath it!

The selection of a primer for the particular job you are working on is very important therefore, you must select one that will provide you with the performance characteristics, and enhance the topcoat that you apply over it. After you select the right primer for thejob, carefully follow mixing and application directions in this manual. The application of primer to small areas should be made with relatively low air pressure. This will allow for better spray control and keep overspray to a minimum. Apply justenough primer to achieve coverage over the entire repair area. Allow primer to flash offcompletely before applying a second coat. When too much primer is applied without adequate flash time between coats, the result will be poor adhesion, improper cure, poorsanding, and shrinkage.

IMPORTANT: You must wait for each coat of primer to completely flash off before applyingthe next coat. Allow primer to dry for the recommended time (refer to individual producttechnical data sheet). Attempting to sand it too soon will cause the sandpaper to clog upresulting in deeper sand scratches.

REACTIVE REDUCERS, BASEMAKER REDUCERS, BASECOAT STABILIZERS

Product DescriptionMany basecoat systems require the use of a "Stabilizer" or a "Converter", which are added to the basecoatcolor. These products are designed to initiate a very fast cure, or a very fast flash time of the basecoat. Thisis achieved with products that quickly evaporate from the basecoat film or products that induce a reaction ofthe resins. The objective of these products is to prevent the aluminum flakes in the basecoat from moving or"mottling".

Each major paint company has formulated a separate method of "stabilizing" or "converting" their basecoatcolors. 5 STAR Autobody Products has duplicated three of the most very popular Basecoat Systems:

PPG: Reactive Reducers Dupont: Basemaker Reducers Sherwin Williams: Basecoat Stabilizer

Helpful HintsTEN WAYS TO HELP ELIMINATE DUST PROBLEMS

1. Make sure to blow out dust and dirt from moldings, door jambs, vents, etc.

2. Use only clean and lint free rags when surface cleaning.

3. Always wear lint free clothing.

4. Make sure spray booth and equipment is clean and free of dirt that may drop on thejob while spraying.

5. Be certain the booth filters aren't plugged because it will cause the fan to draw airthough cracks and crevices in the booth.

6. Check to insure that booth filters are installed properly (sticky side in). This will keepthe fine fibers in the filter intact and also prevent them from becoming blocked fromdust and dirt outside of the spray booth.

7. Do not hose down the booth walls with water. When the water dries during spraying operations, dirt traps in the creases or filters and may break loose.

8. Tack vehicle off thoroughly, including masking paper. Remember to open the tackcloth fully and use light pressure so that no residue is left on area to be sprayed.

9. Once completing step 8, try to stay in the booth until spraying operations have been completed.

10. When a high degree of static electricity is present, it will help to ground vehicle toavoid attraction of dust particles. Low humidity conditions will promote static problems.

Helpful HintsFlow CoatThis procedure is used to achieve ultimate off the gun finish when using topcoat clear.Polishing is not required unless you want a show quality finish. After your clear coat hascured 12-24 hours, color sand using 600 grit wet paper. Adding a few drops of liquid dishwashing detergent to your water bucket, soak the sandpaper for 15-20 minutes. This willprevent the sand paper from loading. Sand the complete surface removing all of theorange peel texture, there should be no shiny spots (do not sand through the clearcoat).Rinse and dry the surface as you work to prevent soap residue from biting into the freshclear coat.

After you are finished sanding, wipe the sanded surface using a clean soft cloth and water.Wipe dry with a clean soft cloth. Blow the surface to remove any water that could be present in seams, door jambs, vents, etc. Then lightly tack off the surface to remove anylint or dust. Avoid touching the surface with your bare hands as the oil from your skin cancause contamination.

Select the 5 STAR clearcoat and activator that you will be using for your flow coat. Followall mixing instructions listed on the individual product tech data sheet. Begin by applyingone medium coat, allowing proper flash time. Then follow up with 1 or 2 wet coats allowing clear to flash off between coats.

PolishingPolishing urethane clear coats is best achieved when performed in accordance with the recommendations listed on the individual product Technical Data Sheet. Keep in mind thatthe window of time for best results is within 48 hours of the clear coat application. Waitinglonger will make polishing more difficult as the clear coat cures and becomes harder. There are many high quality products and systems available for polishing. Choose a system that suits your needs and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use.

MaintenanceWe have listed some helpful hints for maintaining your 5 STAR finish:• Do not apply wax for at least 60 days (we recommend using a quality carnuba

wax only).• Wait at least two weeks before washing your vehicle with a detergent or soap.• Only use a product that has been specially formulated as a mild car wash detergent.• Never wash your vehicle in direct sunlight.• Always use a chamois or soft towel when drying off the surface after washing and

rinsing.• Stay away from commercial car washes for a minimum of 30 days.• Immediately remove anything that spills or splashes onto your finish such as bird

droppings, bugs, tree sap, gasoline, soda pop etc.
