Bell Ringer
• “Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.”
• How can this quote be applied to freedman during Reconstruction?
Changes in Farming
• Labor shortage:–Former slaves refused
to pick cotton –Field work paid 6
cents a day –Railway work paid $2
a day
Changes in Farming• Sharecropping: Farming arrangement in which a
family works land in exchange for a share of the crop.– Planter usually provided housing– Shares ranged from 1/3 to ½
• Negatives:– Landowners deduct cost of housing and food from
harvest– Workers fined for days of work missed– If workers owe $, they are not permitted to leave the
farm
Changes in Farming
• Tenant Farming: Farming in which a family rents land and equipment needed to plant crops.– Can plant whatever crop you wanted– Be your own boss
• Negatives– Renting costs more than owning over time
Cities and Industry
• Atlanta begins to emerge as a metropolis
• South begins to industrialize but never reaches Northern levels– Southern industry based on raw
material production
Reconstruction Spending• Money was invested in improving infrastructure.
• Infrastructure is any public service that society uses such as roads, railways, bridges, and telegraph lines.
• Public Schools established

bribery to murder
The End of ReconstructionCorruption: Reconstruction money didn’t always go
where it was supposed to.
Economy: In order to pay for reconstruction, taxes raised to all time highs.
Violence: As Northern soldiers left the South, blacks intimidated into not voting, allowing whites to regain control.
Democrats return to power: Pardoned Confederates take back government positions and block Republican laws.
Compromise of 1877

• Republicans agree to give funds for Southern Infrastructure if Southern Democrats vote for Hayes
