Dear Reader,

We are in one of the most important moments to the Nursing Staff of the Surgery Block and, primarily, to the Material and Sterilization Center in Brazil. The essential reason for such highlight is the upcoming 5th Pan-American Conference on Sterilization and the 6th International Symposium on Hospital Infection Control, a fact that contributes a lot for writing another page of the rich history of SOBECC.

The task is undoubtedly hard, but we are proud of it, and it encourages us to improve even further the quality of our events and offer novelties to make it possible for the participant to fully enjoy the period of learning and knowledge exchange. And it could not be different in this important occasion! In addition to many awards, for the first time an “ideal” Material and Sterilization Center will be available in the event, a space where it will be possible to get in contact with the technological advances of this area, the new techniques used and the new products.

For ten years, the Brazilian Society of Nurses of Surgical Center, Anesthesia Recovery and Material and Sterilization Center (SOBECC) has been promoting the International Symposium on Sterilization and Control of Hospital Infection. This is a truly Brazilian event, which involves experts from the sterilization field and participants from many States of Brazil, in addition to national and international guests.

Additionally, this year the Country was chosen to be the seat of the Fifth Edition of the Pan-American Conference on Sterilization, another remarkable opportunity for integration between professionals and partners of the entire Latin America. And SOBECC was given the honor of planning this major international event.

The 5th Pan-American Conference on Sterilization and the 6th International Symposium on Sterilization and Control of Hospital Infection are a unique occasion for the update of health professionals involved in patient care, and in the prevention and control of infections. This is an invitation to the debate, to reflection, to steep into and search for responses in face of the challenges we face on the daily practice and research. For nurses and Nursing staffs that work in the sterilization and infection control areas, the improvement and update should be permanent This is only this way whereby the professional keeps himself prepared to develop actions that stand out for the quality of care. And it is in this sense that SOBECC is performing the activities necessary for structuring and organizing both events.

In addition, São Paulo – the largest Brazilian city in the Southern hemisphere – is the perfect scenario for conciliating work and leisure. Influent, both nationally and internationally, either from the social, cultural, economic or political standpoint, São Paulo has currently an estimated population of 11 million inhabitants. The planet’s 14th most globalized city offers a number of shopping malls, cinemas, parks, theaters and restaurants of excellent quality.

Surgical Implant: Shared Responsibility The lecture will primarily address aspects of the current legislation (Federal Medical Board – CFM) on surgical implants and the applicability thereof, in addition to addressing questions on the nurse’s work in the CME and the Hospital Infection Control Center (CCIH) and his responsibility for materials used in health facilities, with focus on the institution’s joint liability for the use of non-qualified materials.

Suspension of Particles in Aseptic Environments: Preparation Area, Sterile Area and StorageThe purpose of this lecture is to address the importance of the air conditioning system in the control of suspended particles in areas of preparation, sterilization and storage of materials in the CME. Therefor, factors such as sources of suspended particles in air, materials, people, scaling, breathing/feeding, smoking, jewelry, clothes, accesses, fluids and equipment will be addressed, in addition to the impact of the conditioning system.

Hospital waste Management in CMEThis is a report of the experience of the Waste Management Committee of the University Hospital of the University of São Paulo in preparing and implementing the Health Service Waste Management Plan based on the rules of the National Environment Council (CONAMA) Resolution 358/2005, and Resolution of the National Agency for Health Surveillance (ANVISA) – RDC 306/2004. The purpose of the plan is to establish and implement routines for wastes, in the search for ongoing improvement of professionals in the prevention and reduction of health and environment risks.

Peracetic Acid as a High-Level Disinfection AlternativeIn addition to comprising aspects of the current legislation, the lecture should address the classification, synthesis, chemical characteristics of disinfectants, and the product’s action mechanism. The presentation will further address the advantages and disadvantages of the peracetic acid, performance of chemical and microbiological control, and warranty of the process efficiency, among other themes.

Don’t become the Patient!This presentation places the spectrum of the increasing risk of infection in the health area, originating from new and mutating microorganisms. It focus on the importance of decontamination and application of the proper aseptic technique during the surgical procedure and points out its role in the decrease of hospital infections, as well as the awareness of the Surgical Center people on the real risk of contamination to which they are submitted during the treatment of infected patients.

Eng. Martin Pfeifer - GermanyAdministrative Director of PEREG GmbH, member of the DIN Working Group, that works in the regularization of washers and disinfection machines and in the monitoring of studies on the efficacy of cleaning processes of disinfection washers.

Resources and Techniques used to assess the Cleaning Process EfficiencyIt is known that the cleaning process of surgical instruments is as important as disinfection and sterilization. The same care and effort should be applied in cleaning when it is about the practical application, validation and routine monitoring. At the same time in which cleaning is one of the most important tasks, it is one of the less standardized processes, what makes it difficult to guarantee quality. Different cleaning processes are used to solve problems of blood-contaminated instruments. Even for the automated cleaning in thermal disinfection machines, a large variety of cleaning parameters are used in practice, and differences are observed also from one washer to another. Thus, what is necessary for a safe and sensible application in the routine monitoring and validation of cleaning processes?

Sterilization Packaging – what you need to know on the National (ABNT) and International Technical Standards – CEN/ISO Harmonization. The lecture will address major aspects related to Surgical Grade paper for packaging, such as the national, international standards, main differences, changes and characteristics that should be observed to assess the product quality according to the established standards.
