Convert Measurement UnitsConvert Measurement UnitsObjective: To understand how to change units of measurement in the customary system

Convert Measurement UnitsAt the end of this lesson you should be able to answer the following question.

How do you use ratios to convert units of measurement?

Convert Measurement UnitsA relationship within the same type of unit of measurement can be written as a ratio.

Example1 yard = 3 feet can be written as 1 yard 3 feet

Convert Measurement UnitsThese ratios can be used to set up a proportion to solve measurement problems.

Example1 yard 6 yards 3 feet = ? feet

Convert Measurement UnitsIf you do not know these relationships, use the chart on page 290. This must be memorized by Monday for the quiz.

Convert Measurement UnitsConvert 20 feet to inches.

Step 1 Identify the direct relationship between the units in the problem. 1 foot 12 inches12 inches or 1 foot

Convert Measurement UnitsConvert 20 feet to inches.

Step 2 Create a ratio from the numbers in the original problem. 20 feet ? inches ? inches or 20 feet

Convert Measurement UnitsConvert 20 feet to inches.

Step 3 Create a proportion with the two ratios, making sure the same units are in the numerator on each ratio. 20 feet 1 foot ? inches = 12 inches

Convert Measurement UnitsConvert 20 feet to inches.

Step 4 Multiply the diagonal numbers, then divide by the remaining number. Then add the correct unit. 20 feet 1 foot ? inches = 12 inches20 x 12 = 240

We can draw a bar diagram to solve this problem.

Step 1 Create a bar diagram and divide into sections matching the denominator of the fraction.
