I'IAY-13-2011 !0: 17

Case Number: 2008-1002896

H"r", uiol-lDate: February 13, 2008

Introduction: On February 8, 2008 I (FJS) met the walkerCounty Sheriff s Department to exhume the remainsfound beside West Rogers Road, Lafayefte, Georgia in Apill 1953.had found a report that stating that shortly before the remainswhite male, Ronald Tammen, vanished from his dorm room at Miam' Universitv in

P.011

t-\aL'iai

.@fd-gnio. Since Highway 27 runs between Oxford, Ohio and Lafayette, Georgia,| | speculated that the remains may be those of Tammen.

After meeting withl ll was taken to the city cemetery where theremains had beeninteneclTolEffi!?n on-site autopsy in 1953. A backhoe was usedto remove the overburden, and upon reaching the outline of a wooden coffin, which hadlong since decomposed, the remainder of the soil was removed by shovels and trowels.

At a depth of approximately 4.5 feet I found a dark brown body bag. The body bag waslargely intact but not impervious to percolating ground water, lnside the body bag I

found the left and right femora, left and right tibiae, left and right ulnae, left and righthumeri, a fragmentary left radius fragmentary left and right parietals, the ocoipitalportion of the skull, two molars, and two premolars. All skeletal elements were found tobe in extremely poor condition after having been exposed to ground water and acidicsoil for 55 years. The bones were waterlogged, exhibited cortical flaking anddemineralization, and fell apart at the slightest touch. No other skeletal elements wererecovered.

The bones were placed in brown paper bags and Vansported to Georgia Bureau ofInvestigatlon Headquarters for analysis. Following the exhumation, the grave wasrefilled.

Analysis: Due to the extremely poor condition of the bones, no morphologioal ormorphometric analysis could be performed. In addition, the roots of all four teethrecovered are also in extremely poor condition and the pulp cavity has been penetratedby groundwater. Several of the long bones witl be submitted to the Federal Bureau ofInvestigation's National Missing Person DNA Dalabase for nuclear and mitochondrialDNA analysis.
