Project approach

& Transformers as the main task to

combat PCBs cross contamination

Life time cycle of PCBs transformer

LIFE CYCLE OF TRANSFORMERS

Page 5: 5 life cycle

The life time of transformers depends: -intention of use -location [open air or in a building] -aggressive air environment corrosion -manufacturing standards [special coating, oil extension tank, buchholz ..]

Life time of transformer

Page 6: 5 life cycle

Life time of oil transformers -between 15 to 25 years ( transmission transformers ) -over 25 years (power transformers)

Life time cycle of PCBs transformer

Page 7: 5 life cycle

Life time of PCBs transformer -because of excellent dielectric properties of PCBs & -chemical resistance again temperature elevations, non solubility in to water .. ~40 years

Life time cycle of PCBs transformer

Page 8: 5 life cycle

During the life time of 40 years on a PCBs transformer may required: -to replace the dielectric oil or - to add in the PCBs oil mineral oil or -to empty the PCBs oil for maintenance

Life time cycle of PCBs transformer

Page 9: 5 life cycle

Reason for PCBs cross contamination - emptying PCBs for repair -using the same pumps and -hoses or the -same oil storage tank -toping oil (add oil) Consider that a PCBs Maintenance FACILITY as “hospital of transformers”

Life time cycle of PCBs transformer Cross contamination

Page 10: 5 life cycle

How and when occurs PCBs cross contamination?

If for each maintenance work

doesn't’ be checked the dielectric oil before!!

PCBs Cross contamination

Page 11: 5 life cycle

Measures to combat cross contamination ?

Oil treatment and transformers maintenance facilities

should develop a system to control cross

contamination

Maintenance facilities of transformers

Page 12: 5 life cycle

Methodology to Control cross contamination?? -Introduce at least: oil test before entering the facility -Analysis should be accurate and quick - If concentration PCBs >50ppm, store the oil in a separate second tank - classified transformer as PCBs should be managed according local legislation as hazardous waste

MAITENANCE OF TRANSFORMERS CROSS CONTAMINATION

Page 13: 5 life cycle

PCBs producers/owners are asking ! How to manage a PCBs transformer /capacitor ? I have to take a decision for replacing or keeping!!

LIFE CYCLE management of transformer

Page 14: 5 life cycle

PCBs Owners-Producers are faced on parameters as: -phase out date of 2025 -evaluate the remaining life time -cost benefit analysis between replacing or decontamination - evaluate the risk arising form the operation of a PCBs transformer (hospital, water sources, forest, school, etc .)

LIFE CYCLE management of transformer

Page 15: 5 life cycle

1st Parameter PCBs phase out date of 2025 Albania governmental commitment against Stockholm convention -Signed 05-12-2001 -Ratified 4-10-2004

LIFE CYCLE management of transformer

Page 16: 5 life cycle

2nd Parameter Evaluation of the remaining life time of transformer considering: -the external condition of transformer [corrosion level, leakages, damages ] -the internal- electrical condition of transformer , [ core , switches, poles/ insulators..]

LIFE CYCLE management of transformer

Page 17: 5 life cycle

3rd Parameter Cost benefit analysis between replacing or decontamination considering: -costs to dispose all PCB -cost to buy new transformer or to decontaminate

LIFE CYCLE management of transformer

Page 18: 5 life cycle

4th Parameter -Evaluate all risk arising from the operation of PCBs transformer. -neighboring activities -location of transformer [school, hospital, Power plant..] -water sources distance [River, lake distances ..]

LIFE CYCLE management of transformer

Page 19: 5 life cycle

5th Parameter (continued) -Risk arising from the operation of PCBs transformer. -explosion [rise temperature, thunderbolt hit.. ] -leakage of PCBs [may contaminate water sources, soil.. ]
