The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), media and social media is encouraged in this unit.

It is recommended that teachers using ICT, media and social media adhere to school protocols and relevant education department guidelines.

Please note, to be eligible to use Facebook students must be at least 13 years of age.

Information and Communication Technology Use of computers

General use in this unit

Information and Communication Technology (ICT), media and social media opportunities

In this unit ICT can be used by students to:

• Display the lesson scenario on their laptops and (or) iPads.

• Use the interactive pdf versions of lesson activity sheets on PC or laptops.

• Research information online.

• Edit film footage and audio or work with images.

• View video and listen to audio resources.

• Contact board game manufacturers, experts on board games or parents using Skype to source, verify or confirm research information and ideas - a Skype interview can take place live or can be pre-recorded for student groups to watch later.

Specific use in this unit

Lessons 1 and 2 - The thing about board games

Students can play the interactive versions of board games on PC or laptops.

Lessons 4 and 5 - Estimate and measure

Students can sketch their board game dimensions using free drawing software such as Tux paint www.tuxpaint.org.

Lessons 7-10

Students can:

• Convert board game flashcards to PowerPoint, Keynote slides or pdf format for digital access.

• Create a digital board game in pdf format or by using Photoshop or other graphic design software.

• Present their board games and ask for feedback from experts on design and mathematics, parents or community using Skype.

Lesson 11 - Testing games

Students can:

• Have survey respondents complete a digital version (Excel) of their board game survey.

• Create and display graphs and charts using word, Photoshop, PowerPoint or Keynote.

Lesson 12 - Planning our board game launch

Students can view and edit film footage, listen to audio or work with images for the launch presentation.

Board game launch

Students can:

• Present their board games and explain the learning process to the audience through the use of images, film or PowerPoint or Keynote slides.

• Broadcast (live or pre-record) their board game presentations to an audience using Skype.

Lesson 13 - How did we go?

Students can:

• View and edit film footage, listen to audio or work with images.

• Provide links to video and images of the launch to an audience through email or e-newsletter.

General use in this unit

Media - Film cameras, photographic cameras and audio recorders

In this unit media can be used by students to:

• Film or record (using an audio recorder) a student, teacher, parent, former student or community leader outlining the scenario to students.

• Photograph images (and include text) outlining the scenario.

• Film student reflections at the end of the unit - students can compile all of their reflections to highlight their personal learning and progression through the unit.

Specific use in this unit

Lessons 4 and 5 - Estimate and measure

Students can capture time lapse film of their board game design process including learning about football pitch dimensions, making estimations and measurements and sketching and drafting.

Lessons 6 and 7 - Developing our flashcards

Teachers can film students developing their flashcards and delivering their sample questions to others.

Lessons 7-10

Students can capture time lapse film of their board game development including using material, measuring dimensions and graphic design.

Lesson 11 - Testing games

Students can film other students providing survey responses on their board game. This footage can be used as part of their presentation of findings to the class.

Board game launch

Teachers can:

• Film game development teams making their presentations.

• Film audience reactions and testimonials of students’ work while they play the board games.

Social media - Schools Twitter and Facebook

In this unit social media can be used to:

• Contribute to Twitter conversations about football, mathematics and board game development by asking questions or offering an opinion - class followers can also respond with answers or follow up questions.

• Source interesting information by following spokespeople or organisations with expert knowledge in board game development.

• Monitor student learning through hash tagged tweets or Facebook timeline pages that outlines the activity, the challenges they face, what students have learnt and what resources they are using (class images and video can appropriately be used to support this exercise).

Please note, teachers should interact on the school Twitter and Facebook accounts on behalf of the class.

Specific use in this unit

Lesson 1-3

Students can use Twitter and (or) Facebook to:

• Source information by interviewing players of specific board games.

• Interview board game developers.

• Ask their followers and friends about differences and similarities of board games they are familiar with.

Lesson 6 and 7 - Developing our flashcards

Students can tweet and upload photos of flashcards to followers. Followers can respond with answers and points could be allocated to the first correct response.

Lesson 11 - Testing games

Students can post images of their completed board games to followers and friends, asking for feedback.

Lesson 12 - Planning our board game launch

Teachers can share images of student planning with followers and friends.

Board game launch

Teachers can run a live news feed of the event through school Twitter and Facebook including images and film footage.

Lesson 13 - How did we go?

Teachers can run a news feed of the class communicating their reflections to school Twitter and school Facebook followers.

Teacher note

Using Twitter

It is advised that the same hash tag (#) is used in every class tweet. This will ensure that a complete record of the Twitter conversation can be evidenced for the lesson.

• Showcase learning to viewers by producing a two minute video (film or slideshow of images, whole class or individual groups) about what they have learnt in this class.

• Highlight student reflections at the end of each lesson or unit.

Please note, all video uploads should be conducted by the teacher under the strict protocols of the school and education department guidelines.

Lesson 1-3

Students can watch online video of board games and how they are played. They can use these videos to compare with other board games they are familiar with.

Lesson 6 and 7 - Developing our flashcards

Teachers can show film of students’ completed board games and highlights of the board game launch to followers and friends.

Using YouTube or Vimeo

To ensure maximum exposure, all YouTube or Vimeo videos produced by students should be promoted on school Twitter and Facebook pages.
