WOMEN’S TENNIS ASSOCIATIONMATCH NOTES

Despite her R16 defeat, Ashleigh Barty will return to the No.1 spot after the three other contenders for the top spot at the US Open- Simona Halep, Karolina Pliskova and Naomi Osaka – were all eliminated. Pliskova will rise to No.2 unless Elina Svitolina wins the title. Svitolina will move to World No.3 with her SF showing and No.2 with the title.

Serena Williams will re-enter the Top 10 and could rise to No.8 or No.9 with a runner-up finish or No.6 with her record-tying 24th Grand Slam title.

Belinda Bencic has breached the Top 10 again with her semifinal advancement. Will be No.8 or No.9 by reaching the final, or as high as No.4 with the title.

Bianca Andreescu will make her Top 10 debut with her win over Mertens. She can rise to No.8 or No.9 by mak-ing the final and No.5 with the trophy.

RANKING UPDATESTHE LAST FOUR This year’s US Open semifinals will feature [5] Elina Svitolina, [8] Serena Williams, [13] Belinda Bencic and [15] Bianca Andreescu.

Both Bencic and Andreescu are making their Grand Slam semifinal debut today. While Svitolina is into her second career major semifinal and Serena is making her 38th trip to the final four of a Slam.

The final four lineup at six of the past seven US Opens has featured at least one woman making her Grand Slam semifinal debut (exception was 2017).

From the time of her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the 2014 US Open, to her debut semifinal appearance in New York five years later, Bencic has been through quite an up-and-down road to get back to the top of the women’s game. Following her career year in 2015 which saw her finish with a career year-end ranking of No.14, a miriad of injuries and form took her to as low as No.318 in 2017. Now back in form and back at the top of her game as well as the women’s game in 2019, coupled with her results this fortnight at Flushing Meadows, the Swiss Miss will return to the WTA Top 10 three years and seven months after she left it on February 26th 2016.

Svitolina and Andreescu are both looking to make history for their respective countries. Back at Wimbledon a few months ago, Svitolina became the first Ukrainian to reach the semfinals of a Grand Slam. Therefore, she is aiming to be the first to reach a Slam final and hoping to eventually become the first-ever to capture a major title for her country. Andreescu on the other hand is the first Canadian to advance to the final four of a Slam since Eugenie Bouchard did so at 2014 Wimbledon (lost in final) and would be just the second Canadian ever (Bouchard) to reach a major title match.

The 37-year-old veteran, Serena Williams, is aiming to tie the all-time Grand Slam singles title record at 24 (w/Court).

EARLY BLOOMER Should Bianca Andreescu advance to the US Open final, she would join an elite list of just 6 women to have reached a Grand Slam final in four major appearances or less.

The all-time record for the fewest Grand Slam main draw appearances before reaching a Slam final in the Open Era is two - Pam Shriver was runner-up at 1978 US Open, having only contested Wimbledon two months prior.

When Jelena Ostapenko hoisted the 2017 Roland Gar-ros title, she was making just her eighth Grand Slam main draw appearance.

Should Andreescu go on to win the title, it would be the fewest number of Grand Slam main draw appearanc-es (four) before winning a debut Slam title since Maria Sharapova at 2004 Wimbledon (seven appearances); this was also just Maria’s second attempt at the All En-gland Club. Consequently, this would also tie the fastest record - Monica Seles who was the fastest player to win her first major title in the Open Era, winning the 1990 Roland Garros in just her fourth Grand Slam main draw.

WOMEN’S TENNIS ASSOCIATIONMATCH NOTES

TEENAGE KICKS At 19-years of age, Bianca Andreescu is aiming to be the second teenager this year to advance to a Grand Slam final after Marketa Vondrousova did so at Roland Garros (l. Barty in F).

This is the first time since 2009 that more than one teen-ager has reached a Grand Slam semifinal in a season. Ana Ivanovic (Roland Garros) and Maria Sharapova (Australian Open) were the last teen duo to reach Slam finals in the same season in 2007.

Prior to Vondrousova, the last teen Slam finalist was Caroline Wozniacki, who finished runner-up to Kim Clijsters at the 2009 US Open.

A teenager has won a Grand Slam singles title 33 times (12 different players) in the Open Era. The last teenager to win a Grand Slam title was Maria Sharapova (19 yrs, 132 days) at the 2006 US Open.

A DASHING DEBUT Bianca Andreescu is making her US Open main draw debut this fortnight and has won five matches in a row to advance to her first career Grand Slam semifinal.

This is the best performance by a debutant at the US Open since Venus Williams advanced to the final in her first Flushing Meadows campaign in 1997 (I. Hingis).

QUICK HITS The four semifinalists have won a combined 23 Grand Slam singles titles...all of them won by Serena Williams.

Serena has made more Grand Slam appearances than the other three semifinalists combined.

Serena and Svitolina are the only two players to reach more than one Grand Slam semifinal in 2019 with both having also reached that stage at Wimbledon.

All four semifinalists will exit the 2019 US Open in the Top 10 of the WTA Rankings.

The last Swiss woman to reach a Grand Slam SF was Bacsinszky at 2017 Roland Garros (SF) and the last time a Swiss reached SF at US Open was Hingis in 2001 (SF). Hingis is the only Swiss woman to reach a Grand Slam final. She is a five-time major champion and 12-time runner-up, having won the US Open in 1997 and finished runner-up in 1998-99

SLAMMIN’ SUCCESS Since 1968 Roland Garros, 50 women have won at least one Grand Slam title (29 have gone on to win more).

Of these 50, 11 first-time champions have come at the US Open, with three first-time winners coming from the last three years (2018 – Osaka, 2017 – Stephens, and 2015 – Pennetta).

The last 10 Grand Slams have produced six first-time winners: (2019 Roland Garros – Barty, 2018 US Open – Osaka, 2018 Roland Garros – Halep, 2018 Australian Open – Wozniacki, 2017 US Open – Stephens, 2017 Roland Garros – Ostapenko).

A TELLING TREND... Serena Williams has lost in the US Open final on three occasions including 2018 against Naomi Osaka (also 2001, 2011) - each previous time she lost in the final she would then go on to win the title the following year (2002, 2012)

WOMEN’S TENNIS ASSOCIATIONMATCH NOTES

IN GOOD COMPANY With their R16 victories, Johanna Konta and Elina Svitolina became the 14th and 15th active players to have reached the QF stage at all four Grand Slams:

A FLUSHING STREAK [8] Serena Williams advanced to her 10th consecutive US Open semifinal, and 13th at Flushing Meadows over-all. These 10 semifinals are her best streak at the Slams - her next best streak of reaching consecutive semifinals or better is Wimbledon (2002-04, 2008-2010 and 2015-19 - withdrew from 2017 Wimbledon) and Australian Open (2015-17)

SPREADING THE LOVE Through the first three Slams of 2019, there have been three different champions: Naomi Osaka (Australian Open), Ashleigh Barty (Roland Garros) and Simona Halep (Wimbledon). With all three now eliminated from the 2019 US Open this means there will be four different Grand Slam champions in the same season for the third year in a row.

This is only the fifth time in the Open Era that there have been four different Slam winners in a season in consecutive years - also 1977-78, 1998-99, 2004-05 and 2017-18.

THE SWISS MISS With her Round of 16 upset over reigning World No.1 Naomi Osaka, Belinda Bencic now owns a four-match active win streak vs. World No.1s.

The Swiss Miss joins an elite grouping of 10 other active players to have compiled at least four wins vs. a World No.1.

She is the first player to do so since fellow US Open quar-terfinalist Elina Svitolina produced a remarkable 6-match win streak spanning from 2016-18.

With Serena Williams’ quarterfinal win over Qiang Wang, she achieved her 100th career victory at the US Open - a personal best win total record for her across the Slams, bettering her success at Wimbledon (98):

A SF win would tie her with the all-time US Open wins record held by Chris Evert (101):

CHASING HISTORY

September 5, 1989 - The storied US Open career of Chris Evert comes to an end as the six-time champion is defeated by Zina Garrison 7-6(1), 6-2 in Evert’s final US Open match in the women’s quarterfinals.

Evert made her debut at the US Open in 1971 as a 16-year amateur, reaching the semifinals en route to winning a record 101 of 113 tournament matches.
