Green economy in Central Africa Green economy comes directly from the concept of sustainable development. The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) defines it as “one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. In its simplest expression, a green economy can be thought of as one which is low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive”. This definition has been adopted by the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCA). The Congo Basin countries are concerned by the necessity of conjugating economic development with the protection of natural resources. The forests for instance host a unique biodiversity and contribute from 2% to 11% of national revenues in Central Africa. At the UN Conference on Sustainable Development — Rio+20 — ECCA States presented a common platform on green economy. The sub-region of Central Africa is internationally particularly active on this issue.

The International Forum on Green Business: Presentation

As the only business conference of its kind in Central Africa, the International Forum on Green Business has taken place in Pointe-Noire in May since 2010. It is jointly organized by the Government of the Republic of the Congo and the Economic Community of Central African States. More than 400 participants attended the Forum in 2013. The Forum aims at making politicians, CEOs, donors, sponsors, academics and civil society sensitive to the challenges and the perspectives of green economy. At the same time, it seeks to harmoniously organize and develop the green sector in Central Africa. As decision makers are already involved at international level, the Forum aims at translating this involvement in green economy at local level. The International Forum on Green Business views itself as a platform for exchanging perceptions and best practices of the green sector around the world, as well as a dynamic networking meeting for entrepreneurs.

Activities dedicated to civil society The photography exhibition « Made in Congo »

« Made in Congo » is a photography exhibition project on six Congolese entrepreneurs that are involved in six different economic sectors. These people represent as many personalities and entrepreneurial stories. They were chosen because of their environmental and social vision. Photographs are by Baudouin Mouanda, a prize-winning Congolese photographer.

The exhibition preview will take place at the 5th edition of International Forum on Green Business. Pictures will then travel to other African countries and beyond, in order to give exposure to Congolese entrepreneurs.
