Drink the Keg Dry

The 3rd annual Keg Race Event in Canal Flats is happening this Thursday, May 30 from 5-7 pm at the Flats Venue & Stage. Stop in for a mug of Phillips Blue Buck Beer and a famous chili dog on the Thurs-day evening. Then show up Friday at 11:30 to cheer the keg on as it journeys through town from the 9k bridge, finishing at The Flats RV. It will be a fantastic adventure.

This ‘n’ That Market

There is a new market in town. The Inver-mere This ‘n’ That Market will be in the

Mountain Hub every Saturday through the summer beginning this week, Saturday, June 1. There will be some unique items and a variety of vendors week to week. Hours will be 9:30 am to 4 pm each week. Mountain Hub is located on the main drag of down-town Invermere (1036 7th Ave.)

Canal Days

The fun peaks this Saturday, June 1, with Canal Days activities starting at 8 am with a pancake breakfast. Come for the parade, the classic car show and burn-out pit, live music, the horseshoe tournament, kids’ soap box cars, a native dance group per-formance, raffles, face painting, bouncy castles, food, and a dance featuring the Mile High Club. What else could they possibly do to make this day better? It will be incredible. PTSD & Recovery Book Talk Local author D.M. Ditson will be reading from her new book Wide Open and talking about her recovery from post-traumatic stress disorder at two events this week. Fun Golf Day

The Fairmont Lions are hosting their ‘Fun Day of Golf’ this Saturday, June 8, at Coys Par 3 Golf Course. It is a wonderful day of nine holes at a beautiful, tricky par 3 course, followed by an amazing barbecue meal with lots of great prizes and fun times. There are 2 tee times available with the shotgun start, noon or 2:30 pm followed by dinner at 5:30 pm. The cost is only $30 for 9 holes of golf and dinner. Exercise Woes

The main problem with starting to jog is that by the time you realize how out of shape you are, you have to find a way to get back home.

Hike for Hospice

This year’s Hike for Hospice is happening on Sunday, June 16. It will be a beautiful, easy-going, 1.25 km walk around a scenic lake or an 8 km hike on an easy trail. I really want to write about our Govern-ment system and how none of the parties actually give two bits of concern about the citizens of Canada but that really depress-es me. I just don’t understand how our society works. A bunch of rich entitled folks making random laws to take more and more money from the people. And we are expected to obey. Ouch. Otherwise, summer is hitting us pretty good this week. Things are really warming up. It changes the world around us as more and more people hit the beach, get out hiking and enjoy lots of great outdoor activities. I am so anxious to go camping. Since I have been sick, camping is not in my agenda. Needing dialysis every second day really restricts my time away from home. Really, I guess I can camp for one night at a time but that kind of sucks. I used to love spending a week at a beauti-ful lake. Anytime in the outdoors is very therapeutic for our minds and souls. Many folks around here spend a lot of time out hiking, biking fishing and more. If you do get out camping, please clean up after yourself and be very aware of camp-fire safety. We are lucky to live in this beautiful area and we should strive to keep it this beautiful.

What better way to celebrate than by cruising around town or down a trail? Rob and I were reviewing last year’s article and I see that it was a tough time. He was leaving me at home lots as he made trips to the hospital. When we were in Castlegar, his Mom was able to help out lots. Since back in Invermere, Kootenay Kritters really had to step in and help (Jen is my second-favourite person). Rob is my pack-leader. He provides me with food, shelter, exercise and unending, undeniable love. I love him back. Lately he is tied down with his home dialy-sis machine for some long time periods. It is not as bad as him leaving but it is not an ideal situation for me. It requires about 5 hours of self-time for me. It can be tough on my bladder sometimes. Fortunately he has some great friends who stop by and help out. It is so exciting for me to hear someone at the door during his sessions as I know it is someone coming for me. Life is good. Many of us need lots of support, both hu-mans and companion animals. If you know someone who could use a hand please step up to that plate. Most people are shy and afraid to ask for help and suffer be-cause of it. Be there for them.

Kidney Failure

I don’t have anything fresh to say this week. Watching others go through dialysis and comparing to how things have played out points directly at one thing. You will do a lot better if you actually eat the food you are supposed to eat and cut out the crap. You will be so much healthier with more energy. Really that is the same for anyone. You can prevent so many illnesses by actually eating healthy, every day. Do some re-search, watch out for fads and put in the time and effort. Your body will thank you and you will notice the difference in how you feel.

Self Love

My doctor finally determined that I am so loveable that she gave me a jacket that lets me hug myself.

Just south of Radium, Valley Zipline Ad-ventures is open for the season and has a fantastic 1.5 hour ziplining tour. If you’re looking for something different to keep the guests busy or a new adventure for yourself, this is it. Heather went this weekend and her group of 6 smiled (or screamed) the whole time. One Year Ago

So it has been a year since I first returned to live in Invermere. Looking through last year’s paper I am reminded of how awe-some the people in this valley and the peo-ple in my life are. Came home to a clean house, food in my fridge and smiling faces with helping hands. Thanks again everyone.

My Progress

Realizing that as late as 6 months ago I felt like I was done on this Earth, I would say that my recent progress has been amazing. Bringing home a hemodialysis machine has really changed my health and my outlook. Lately I am getting a lot closer to my old self. I get out for a bit of fishing, a bit of golfing and I try to attend a few more events. I am a ‘light’ version of my old self, both in weight and presence in the valley. Keeping The Valley Peak going is quite time-consuming and mixed with dialysis, my free time is much more limited than I would like. I only fish about one-quarter as much as I would like. My strength is still improving. I have added a couple yards to my golf shots and seem able to carry on for some great Walksons (Watson walks). I am still not getting out to as many events as I would like so please send me photos of your events and information prior to them if you want to see them in The Valley Peak.

Relationships

As we get older, it is important to forget about dating younger partners. I need an older partner that will recognize the signs of a stroke.

The Thrifty Reporter

Garage Sales are in season and just about as much fun shopping at as the Invermere Thrift Store. It is exciting as one never knows the treasures that can be found. The Thrift Store has found that some of their donations are coming from leftover garage sale items. I am thinking, if an item did not sell at a garage sale there is a good reason. Examine the condition - is it worn, are all parts present and working and is it clean? If an item is not sell worthy then the Thrift Store has to dispose of it. Please be re-spectful to donate only items in sale-able condition. They do appreciate your dona-tions but they do have limited storage and garbage collection is expensive.

We all get thinking about possible prob-lems. Sometimes we become consumed in worry. Worrying just does not prevent bad things from happening. It does however, stop us from enjoying the good things that are hap-pening right here, right now.

Side Effects

The notable side effect this week is defi-nitely time. I wanted to watch some soccer this weekend and did not really have enough time between games to do a run on the machine. So tonight (Sunday) will be 6 hours of prep and run time, probably finishing at about 1 am. It is tough on Watson so I have to sneak in a quick walk first, prepare a snack as it is through dinner and prepare my entertainment for the 4 hours on the ma-chine. Sometimes I can work on my computer but tonight I am too burnt out and tired of work so it will be some reading or a bit of Netflix. I really hope that all of you make the most of your free time. With my life changes I have realized how much time I did waste in the past. Now I have no choice but to try to be efficient with all my time.

Open to Changes

I am hoping that you are open to a bit of change in your driving experience. Starting this week the District is changing up the traffic lanes in Athalmer. There will be ded-icated left turning lanes. It will seem a bit strange and tricky at first but it is an effort to keep traffic moving more smoothly. Please be patient with all drivers and open to a bit of change.

Careful with Your Campfires

This is a new season of camping and over all, things are pretty dry out there (although recent rain has helped). There have al-ready been several fires in British Colum-bia (and Alberta) and there really has not been a lot of lightning. Human-caused fires are bad. A lot of un-necessary expenses and resources are used up. Be careful with your campfire. I will review the compliance regulations next week or so. I can tell you now that being out of compliance (fire too large, unattended, etc.) has a fine of $1,150. So be wise and respectful please folks.

Good Service

Life is all about service. It is always inter-esting listening to someone complaining about bad service (myself included of course). As it turns out, the desire to be served is very strong in people. And it leads to a series of disappointments that can turn life sour. Whereas the desire to serve brings happi-ness and enlightenment. The beauty of the human spirit is most strongly expressed when filling the needs of others. Lately I have been focusing on being kind, respectful and of service to others. Top Strategy

How are you marketing your event? Many folks stick to social media. Unfortunately many of the potential clients on SM are staying at home on their computers. Others will get a flyer printed. That can work a bit if you can get your flyer into the hands of all your potential clients. But that is tricky. The Valley Peak is read by 2,000 people every week. Locals and visitors to the val-ley love this informative little paper. A few smiles and some good information in every issue. Really, it is by far the best place to adver-tise in this valley. It is affordable and very effective. Give it a try.

Grow to Eat

Planting doesn’t just happen on the May long weekend. If you hope to eat, say, two lettuce heads a week through the summer, you need to plant two lettuce seeds or seedlings every week. Ditto for sugar snap peas, carrots, and other vegetables where eating them at their peak matters. Another way to spread out the harvest sea-son is to spring plant ever-bearing straw-berry plant varieties (like Albion) instead of, or as well as, the June-bearing varieties (like Tristar). There’s nothing better than eating your own fresh food from your own garden all summer long.

An older gentleman visited the doctor with a sore leg. “I’m afraid that it is just a sign of old age,” said the doctor. “It can’t be,” said the man. “My other leg doesn’t hurt and it is the exact same age.”

will be squaring off against the Golden State Warriors. They have played some tough basketball being down two games to none in the semi-finals against Milwaukee. Good luck Raptors. Canada is cheering you on.

Fishing Tips

Every year I like to emphasize one particu-lar fishing tip. Always think about how many fish are in a lake. Many of the lakes are stocked with thou-sands of trout annually. Often I will be at a lake and see several fish rising. By several, I mean maybe 50 or 100. A lot of fisherman will immediately fish on the surface. But where are the other 4,900 fish in that lake? They are cruising the bottom, where the most food is and furthest away from predators. So remember, the most fish and the big-gest fish are generally in pretty deep water in a lake.
