5. Advocacy: submit and label five different pieces of evidence demonstrating your leadership role in building support for public education on each of the following levels: 1) state, 2) local and 3) national. I have long been a passionate supporter of public education, growing up in an Illinois community where both my father and my grandfather served many years on the local school board. I have spent the past five decades in the educational field, serving both in the classroom and central office administration. It has been my honor to be completing my fifth year of service with the CMCSS School Board while teaching in the educational field at APSU. My educational background and experiences have fueled an innate desire to teach and try to better the lives of others; this has become my lifelong commitment and passion. The inception of P.A.C.E., Political Action Committee for Education, in the Clarksville Montgomery School System kindled my urge to promote public education. I served as an organization officer for many years, promoting educational support with elected officials, organizing political forums, and serving as a congressional contact. The past seven years, I have served as a volunteer mentor for the Tennessee Promise program, supporting and encouraging assigned college bound high school seniors from my community. Because of pandemic restrictions, several contact changes were necessary this year. Other recent mentoring experiences include mentoring APSU students, for which I received the Freshman Success Award, and extending support to new school board members. Although public speaking still makes me uncomfortable, I do enjoy sharing educational information and ideas, and have included an outline of the last two presentations addressing current educational issues. The invitations for the presentations were extended by the Clarksville Montgomery County Retired Teachers Association and the Delta Kappa Educational Society. I strive to improve my effectiveness and professional growth as a school board member and as an educator by participating in as many TSBA and NSBA offerings as possible. These programs include educational events, conferences, webinars, legal lunches, modules, workshops, Legislative & Legal Institutes, Legislator contact, etc. To understand and maintain strong working relationships with the local governing body, I try to attend three County Commission meetings monthly. I sincerely enjoy serving on the Clarksville Montgomery County School Board and take great pride that our Board has long been recognized as a Board of Distinction. Other items in this environment bringing pride are the National Technology Award and the Point of Pride award. Monthly Point of Pride awards are presented by board members during school board meetings to publicly recognize outstanding achievement, distinction, and educational accomplishments of CMCSS students and employees. I initiated the Points of Pride component of Board meetings while serving as an Interim Director of Schools in 2001 and this practice continues today. The National Technology Award was presented to our School Board after the CMCSS Technology department invited me to accompany them to their National Technology Conference

The National Technology Award was presented to our School Board after the CMCSS Technology department invited me to accompany them to their National Technology Conference

in New Orleans. We had worked closely with innovative practices of pre-coding testing material while I was serving as the system testing coordinator. While there I quickly realized CMCSS was worthy of national recognition in this area and immediately began documenting and organizing required submission material. The visuals and descriptions of innovative technology utilized in each of our CMCSS schools, combined with professional narration of script set to the musical background of Patti Page’s haunting rendition of The Tennessee Waltz was a winning combination. The following year we traveled to the National Technology Conference in Denver to proudly accept this national award.

Included are a few labeled examples of educational advocacy including types of communication sent to local, state, and national government officials. As additional evidence of my continuous commitment to education and promotion of quality education, I have included my current TSBA Boardmanship Awards Program transcript and my resume.

Senator Marsha Blackburn 357 Dirksen Senate Office Building Washington DC 20510

Senator Blackburn,

I am writing in opposition to private school vouchers and I am urging Congress to reject using any federal funds for a national voucher program, including any special education vouchers for military children and specific subgroups of students. Public funds should be used within public schools which educate more than 50 million students.

Vouchers drain funds from public schools to pay private school tuition for a few students. In stark contrast to the strong requirements faced by public school, private voucher schools do not have to meet ESSA and IDEA standards and they are not required to accept all students.

Vouchers leave behind many disadvantaged students because private schools may not accept them or do not offer the special services they need. Students with disabilities and English language learners are underserved in voucher schools. Students with disabilities attending a private school with a voucher would not necessarily receive all the Individualized Education Plan services they would otherwise receive in a public school. Not all private schools are bound to follow the same inclusion practices and parents are not entitled to the same procedural safeguards as they are under IDEA. Please consider these facts and support public education. Sincerely, Margaret Pace [email protected]

CMCSS School Board Clarksville-Montgomery County School System

May 25, 2021

MCHS Seniors: Congratulations on your progress with the TN Promise program! My name is Margaret Pace, current APSU faculty, a retired educator from CMCSS and your TN Achieves mentor. I am very excited to be working with you and this program. As mentors with the TN Promise program, we have a choice of county high schools; because I am the Clarksville-Montgomery County School Board member for School District 2, I chose Montgomery Central High School since it is the high school in our district. A little of my personal background information - graduating from high school and college early, I began my teaching career in Harrisburg IL as a 19-year-old. Two years later, we relocated in Clarksville as my husband (a pharmacist) began employment with a local drug store chain and I was employed by the Clarksville Montgomery County School System. I spent my last 12 years with CMCSS as a school and central office administrator. I have taught at APSU for the past 32 semesters, working with approximately one hundred college freshmen each semester.

I will try to maintain consistent contact every few weeks with reminders and tips. Deadlines are extremely important to your TN Promise eligibility and to your college success. I am available to help you with any questions that you have concerning the process – feel free to contact me at [email protected] or text, 615-289-5498. TN Promise students have just ONE WEEK left to view the mandatory webinar. Students who do not view the webinar by 11:59 PM on Tuesday, June 1 will become permanently ineligible for TN Promise.

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow, Wednesday, May 26 at the MCHS graduation at the APSU Dunn Center (I am the tall female School Board member). Because of Covid precautions, I will not be shaking your hand this year as you receive your diploma, but I will certainly be proudly smiling behind the mask! So that I will know I have made connections correctly, please respond with any questions and verify that you have received this email; good luck with your college career! Sincerely, Margaret Pace [email protected]
