They who wait for God shall renew their strength,

they shall mount up with wings like eagles,

they shall run and not be weary,

MEDITATION

O GOD, HEALER OF the broken-hearted and Binder of their wounds, grant consolation to those

who mourn. Give them strength and courage in the time of their grief, and restore to them a

sense of life’s goodness. Fill them with reverence and love, that they may serve You with

a whole heart, and let them soon know peace. Amen.

MEDITATION

As in the world around us, so too in human life: darkness is followed by

light, and sorry by consolation. Life and death are twins; grief and hope

walk hand in hand. Although we cannot know what lies beyond the body’s

death, we put our trust in the undying Spirit that calls us into life and

abides to all eternity.

“When will I be myself again?”

Some Tuesday, perhaps,

In the late afternoon,

Sitting quietly with a cup of tea

And a cookie;

Or Wednesday, same time or later,

You will stir from a nap and see her;

You will pick up the phone to call her;

You will hear her voice – unexpected advice –

And maybe argue.

And you will not be frightened,

And you will not be sad,

And you will not be alone,

Not alone at all,

And your tears will warm you.

But not today,

And not tomorrow,

And not tomorrow’s tomorrow,

But some day,

Some Tuesday, late in the afternoon,

Sitting quietly with a cup of tea

MEDITATION

O GOD, WHAT ARE we, that You have regard for us? What are we, that You are mindful of us?

We are like a breath; our days are as a passing shadow; we come and go like grass which in

the morning shoots up, renewed, and in the evening fades and withers. You cause us to revert

to dust, saying: Return, O mortal creatures! Would that we were wise, that we understood

whither we are going!

For when we die we carry nothing away; our glory does not accompany us. Mark the wholehearted

and behold the upright: they shall have peace. You redeem the soul of Your servants, O God,

and none who trust in You shall be desolate.

MEDITATION

If some messenger were to come to us with the offer that death should be

overthrown, but with the one inseparable condition that birth should also cease;

if the existing generation were given the chance to live for ever, but on the clear understanding

that never again would there be a child, or a youth, or first love, never again new persons

with new hopes, new ideas, new achievements; ourselves for always and never any others—

could the answer be in doubt?

We shall not fear the summons of death ; we shall remember those who

have gone before us, and those who will come after us!

“Alas for those who cannot sing, but die with all their music in them.” Let us treasure the

time we have, and resolved to use it well, counting each moment precious—a chance

to apprehend some truth, to experience some beauty, to conquer some evil, to relieve

some suffering, to love and be loved, to achieve something of lasting worth.

Help us, then, to fulfill the promise that is in each of us, and so to conduct ourselves that,

generations hence, it will be true to say of us: The world is better because, for a brief space,

they lived in it.

MEDITATION

Everything's a wheel, turning and turning, never stopping. The frogs is part of it, and the

bugs, and the fish, and the wood thrush, too. And people. But never the same ones.

Always coming in new, always growing and changing, and always moving on. That's the

way it's supposed to be. That's the way it is…But dying's part of the wheel, right there

next to being born. You can't pick out the pieces you like and leave the rest.

Being part of the whole thing, that's the blessing.

A Blessing For Mourners by Anita Diamant

My brothers and sisters who are worn out and crushed by this mourning,

let your hearts consider this:

This is the path that has existed from the time of creation and will exist

forever. Many have drunk from it and many will yet drink. As was the first

meal so shall be the last.

My brothers and sisters, may the One who comforts comfort you.

Blessed is the One who comforts the mourners.

There’s an old song with the lyrics, “The song is ended, but the melody

lingers on.” Rabbi Robert Kahn said, “It’s the same with people. The life has

ended, but the melody lingers on. The music of our loved ones’ lives does

re-echo in the sound chambers of our hearts. Like a melody remembered,

their memory is as alive and as fresh as the days when we had them with us.

And when we cry, it is not with painful sadness or in deep mourning, but

rather with a joy so deep and reverent that we cry at its beauty and its

wonder. How lovely it is to be able to remember; how wonderful to be able

to bring them back into our lives, to hear again the music of their voices.

Their lives are ended but their melodies linger on.

MEDITATION

In the rising of the sun and in its going down, we remember them.

In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter, we remember them.

In the opening buds and in the rebirth of spring, we remember them.

In the blueness of the sky and in the warmth of summer, we remember them.

In the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of autumn, we remember them.

In the beginning of the year and when it ends, we remember them.

When we are weary and in need of strength, we remember them.

When we are lost and sick at heart, we remember them.

When we have joys we yearn to share, we remember them.

So long as we live, they too shall live, for they are now a part of us,

as we remember them.

In Tim O’Brien’s novel, The Things They Carried, he writes:

“Well, right now I'm not dead. But when I am, I don't know, I guess it's like

being inside a book that nobody's reading. An old one. It's up on a library

shelf, so you're safe and everything, but the book hasn't been checked out

for a long, long time. All you can do is wait. Just hope somebody'll pick it up

and start reading.”

May we cherish the memories of our loved ones, never letting their

memories gather dust. May we find peace in our memories with our loved

ones, and may we pass down their stories from generation to generation.

We die containing a richness of lovers and tribes, tastes we have

swallowed, bodies we have plunged into and swum up as if rivers of

wisdom, characters we have climbed into as if trees, fears we have hidden

in as if caves.

I wish for all this to be marked on by body when I am dead. I believe in

such cartography-to be marked by nature, not just to label ourselves on a

map like the names of rich men and women on buildings.

We are communal histories, communal books. We are not owned or

monogamous in our taste or experience.

O God full of compassion, Eternal Spirit of the universe, grants

perfect rest under the wings of Your Presence to our loved ones who

have entered eternity. Source of Mercy, let them find refuge for ever in

the shadow of Your wings, and let their souls be bound up in the bond of

eternal life. The Eternal God is their inheritance. May they rest in peace,

and let us say: Amen.

Memorial Blessing

When I die give what’s left of me away.

To children and old men that wait to die.

And if you need to cry, cry for your brother walking the street beside you.

And when you need me, put your arms around anyone and give them whatyou need to give me.

I want to leave you something, something better than words of sounds.

Look for me in the people I’ve known or loved, and if you cannot give meaway, at least let me live in your eyes and not in your mind.

You can love me best by letting hands touch hands, and by letting go ofchildren that need to be free.

Love doesn’t die, people do. So when all that’s left of me is love, give me away.
