Iso Area Landscape Scheme Overview of the Iso Area The Iso Area is located in the northern central part of the Kanmachi Area, and is abundant in nature such as Kinko Bay, which was formed from the Aira Caldera, and the verdant Isoyama. The area is also home to a number of cultural and historical properties which were important to Japan’s modern industrialization. This is only made better by the number of areas which offer full views of Sakurajima; dependent on the time of day, and location, visitors may enjoy the active volcano’s varied expressions. Established in 1658 by Shimadzu Mitsuhisa, the 19 th lord of the Satsuma (modern day Kagoshima) Clan, the garden Sengan-en has been designated as one of Japan’s areas of great scenic beauty; Sengan-en draws a large number of visitors every year. Next to Sengan-en stands the Shuseikan. Established in 1851 by the 28 th Satsuma Lord Shimadzu Nariakira, this was the first western-style spinning mill built in Japan. Aiming to create a rich country, strong army, and encourage new industry, the projects at the Shuseikan are in large part responsible for the modernization of Japan. ◇Outlookpoint 1 (Torigoe) 31° 36’53″ N 1403, 130° 34’24″ E 8515, elevation of 24.2m
Torigoe, positioned in the middle of a steep hill, overlooks the symbolic
Sengan-en and Ijinkan areas, interwoven with the surrounding greenery and
backdrop of Kinko Bay. This viewpoint at Torigoe commands a view of this
impressive scenery.
Thanks to the gentle and lovely curves formed between Kinko Bay and the
coastline, the overall beauty of the scenery remains largely unchanged.
◇Outlookpoint 2 (Tottei) 31° 36’56″ N 7541, 130° 34’36″ E 4371, elevation of 2.2m
When Sakuradani, an area famous for its sakura (cherry blossoms) still existed, it
was said that people enjoyed viewing the blooming flowers from aboard ships. We
no longer have “Sakuradani,” but the wind surfing, swimming, and more that this
area offers while surrounded by evergreen-covered mountains and other natural
scenery from Kinko Bay are one of this area’s major appeals.
In order to guarantee a panoramic view of this area from Kinko Bay, a
outlookpoint has been established in Tottei.
The “Satsuma Historical Area Map” is an old
map that was reprinted in the early Showa Era.
The sakura and pine trees are drawn to stand out
amongst the mountains, with the sakura trees
along the coastline and the area called
Sakuradani which was covered wholly in sakura
are important characteristics as well.
