Matins Gospel: Luke 24:36-53

At that time, Jesus, having risen from the dead, stood in the midst of his disciples and said to them, "Peace to you." But they were startled and frightened, and supposed that they saw a spirit. And he said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do questionings rise in your hearts? See my hands and feet, that it is I myself; handle me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have." And when he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they still disbelieved for joy, and won-dered, he said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?" They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate before them. Then he said to them, "These are my words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled. Then he opened their minds to understand the Scrip-tures, and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repen-tance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, begin-ning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I send the prom-ise of my Father upon you; but stay in the

city, until you are clothed with power from on high." Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he blessed them, he parted from them, and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped Him, and they returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple blessing God.+

Resurrection Hymn - Tone 8 From the heights Thou didst descend,

O Compassionate One, And Thou didst submit to the three day

burial that Thou might deliver us from passions.

Thou are our life and resurrection, O Lord, glory to Thee.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to

the Holy Spirit,

Hymn of GreatMartyr George - Tone 4

Liberator of captives, defender of the poor, physician of the sick, and champion of kings, O trophy-bearer, Great Martyr George, intercede with Christ God that our souls be

saved.

now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Hymn of the Theotokos - Tone 8 Thou who for our sake was born of a Virgin, And didst suffer crucifixion, O Good One, And didst despoil death through death, and

didst reveal resurrection. Despise not those Whom Thou hast created

with Thine own hand; Show forth Thy love for mankind, O Merciful

One, Accept the intercessions of Thy Mother, the

Theotokos for us, and save Thy despairing people, O our Savior!

Prokeimenon in the 8th Tone (Ps 76)

Pray and make your vows before the Lord our God!

In Judah God is known; His name is great in Israel!

Epistle: 2 Cor. 6:16-18;7:1

B RETHREN, you are the temple of the living God; as God said, "I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their God, and

they shall be my people. Therefore come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty." Since we have these prom-ises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God.+

Alleluia in the 8th Tone (Ps 95)

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Come let us rejoice in the Lord! Let us make a joyful noise to God our Savior!

Let us come before His face with thanks-giving; let us make a joyful noise to Him with psalms!

Gospel: Luke 6:31-36

T HE LORD SAID, "And as you wish

that men would do to you, do so to them. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to

you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expect-ing nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrate-ful and the selfish. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful."+

Living Faith Living Faith Living Faith Living Faith Classes for Fall 2009

Mark the dates! Christian Life Education courses:

All Living Faith classes begin at 11 am, and are open to the public.

Sat. Oct. 17: A Christian Ending To Our Life Starting with a memorial service (also called a panikhida/parastas), this workshop will include basic information about Christian canons, traditions and theology regarding the body, death, preparations for a Christian death, and information from local funeral homes on pre-planning an Orthodox Christian funeral, requiem liturgy, and burial. Don’t miss this one.

Sat. Nov. 21: The Parthenon Code: Mankind’s History in Marble The DaVinci Code is fictional. The Bible Code is bogus. The Parthenon Code is “A startling testament to the validity of Scripture.” We will look at the author’s claim that the ancient Greeks knew exactly who Noah was, and enshrined the history of mankind, the Genesis account, on the Parthenon.

Sat. Dec. 19: The Twelve Days of Christmas: True Origins

Just before Christmas, we’ll look at the origins of the nonsensical and well-loved carol, The Twelve Days of Christmas, and see that in spite of many false urban rumors going around about it being a hidden form of Jesuit catechism, it is, in fact, likely that this ancient carol may recount a Christian pilgrim’s journey from England to the Holy Land.

Classes are free,

but please register so there is enough hand out material.

“Living Faith” Classes for 2010 will be scheduled soon.

See Fr. John if you have a request or an idea for a Living Faith Class.

Visitors We are happy that you joined us today, and we want you to know the following;

• Visitors and children are always welcome at all of our worship services.

• You won't be asked to do anything that would make you uncomfortable.

• We don't expect visitors to contribute anything to the financial support of our parish.

• Our children worship with us, and we love having them here.

If you are an Orthodox Christian, please introduce yourself to Fr. John before the service begins, so that, if possible, you may receive the Holy Mysteries of our Lord Jesus Christ.

If you are not an Orthodox Christian, we invite you to partake of the blessed bread distributed at the end of the service, to fill out a “Welcome” card (available in the Narthex), and to join us after the service for some hospitality!

Glorification of St Innocent, Metropolitan of Moscow, Enlightener of the Aleuts and Apostle to America (in the world John Popov-Veniaminov), was born on August 26, 1797 in the village of Anginsk in the Irkutsk diocese, into the family of a sacristan. The boy mastered his studies at an early age and by age seven, he was reading the Epistle in church. In 1806 they sent him to the Irkutsk seminary. In 1814, the new rector thought it proper to change the surnames of some of the students. John Popov received the surname Veniaminov in honor of the deceased Archbishop Benjamin of Irkutsk (+ July 8, 1814). On May 13, 1817 he was ordained deacon for the Irkutsk Annun-ciation church, and on May 18, 1821, he was ordained priest.

The missionary service of the future Apostle of America and Siberia began with the year 1823. Father John spent 45 years laboring for the enlightenment of the peoples of Kamchatka, the Aleutian Islands, North

America, Yakutsk, the Khabarov frontier, perform-ing his apostolic exploit in severe conditions and at great risks to life. St. Inno-cent baptized ten thousand people, and built churches, beside which he founded schools and he himself taught the fundamentals of the Christian life. His knowl-edge of various crafts and arts aided him in his work.

Father John was a remark-able preacher. During the celebration of the Liturgy,

memorial services and the all-night Vigil, he incessantly guided his flock. During his time of endless travels, Father John studied the languages, customs and habits of the peoples, among whom he preached. His work in geography, ethnography and linguistics received worldwide acclaim. He composed an alphabet and grammar for the Aleut language and translated the Catechism, the Gospel and many prayers into that language. One of the finest of his works was the Indication of the Way into the Kingdom of Heaven (1833), translated

into the various languages of the peoples of Siberia and appearing in more than 40 edi-tions. Thanks to the toil of Father John, the Yakut people in 1859 first heard the Word of God and divine services in their own native language.

On November 29, 1840, after the death of his wife, Father John was tonsured a monk with the name Innocent by St Philaret, the Metropolitan of Moscow, in honor of St In-nocent of Irkutsk. On December 15, Archi-mandrite Innocent was consecrated Bishop of Kamchatka, the Kurile and Aleutian Is-lands. On April 21, 1850 Bishop Innocent was elevated to the rank of archbishop.

By the Providence of God on January 5, 1868, St Innocent succeeded Metropolitan Philaret on the Moscow cathedra. Through the Holy Synod, Metropolitan Innocent con-solidated the secular missionary efforts of the Russian Church (already in 1839 he had proposed a project for improving the organi-zation of missionary service).

Under the care of Metropolitan Innocent a Missionary Society was created, and the Protection monastery was reorganized for missionary work. In 1870 the Japanese Or-thodox Spiritual Mission headed by Archi-mandrite Nicholas Kasatkin (afterwards Saint Nicholas of Japan, (February 3) was set up, to whom St innocent had shared much of his own spiritual experience. The guid-ance by St Innocent of the Moscow diocese was also fruitful, by his efforts, the church of the Protection of the Most Holy Theoto-kos was built up into the Moscow Spiritual Academy.

St Innocent fell asleep in the Lord on March 31, 1879, on Holy Saturday, and was buried at the Holy Spirit Church of the Trinity-St Sergius Lavra. On October 6, 1977, St Inno-cent was glorified by the Russian Orthodox Church. His memory is celebrated three times during the year: on March 31, the day of his blessed repose, on October 5 (Synaxis of the Moscow Hierarchs), and on October 6, the day of his glorification.

GLORY TO GOD FOR ALL THINGS!
