IOWA SOCCER ASSOCIATION | BUILD-OUT LINETitle: Build-out Line – encourage building from the back third
Situation: #1 in possession at goal kicks
+What: The defending team must drop off behind the build-out line.
+When: The attacking team has a goal kick and cannot step to
defend until the goalkeeper distributes (i.e., ball leaves the
goalkeeper’s foot) the ball to a teammate.
+Where: The build out line is located at the half way line.
+Who: All 9U – 10U players on the defending team.
Benefits of the build-out line
+Why: The goal of implementing the build-out line is to promote
player development. The more you coach building from the back the
more your players develop the following:
1. Defenders and goalkeeper refine their technical and tactical
skills of how to build through the thirds.
2. Midfielders learn creative movement/rotations, ball reception,
passing combinations and decision making.
3. Challenges players/coaches to develop the patience and
courage to work through mistakes that can occur as teams
develop their ability to build through the thirds of the field.

Please note: On the previous page, US Soccer doesn't indicate the dimension of where the build-out line is placed. For FALL 2016, Iowa Soccer is instructing members to use the halfway line as the build-out line. We'll evaluate in December if any changes for spring '17.
