PERSPECTIVES

Role of parents and teachers inensuring better future for children

Thursday, 24 May, 2012

Education is the foundation ofimproving society as it enables people todevelop their critical thinking and analysisskills in order to solve problems rationally.Education also prepares countries andindividuals to compete more effectively in thetechnology-driven global marketplace.

While education is readily available toa significant segment of the population, someare still deprived of the opportunity of aneducation, which seriously inhibits their abilityto make a better life for themselves and theirfamilies.

When people are educated they becomestronger because they are more confident andindependent. This strength will move them todo great things and the country, as a whole willenjoy greater prosperity.

In the knowledge age, many parentsare eager to see what future holds for theirchild. And the worries of a parent would neverend no matte how old their child becomes. Inthe eyes of parents, their child will always bethat small cuddly baby that was meant to bedoted upon at all times.

Once parents are aware of their child’spotential, they can begin to hone the hiddenskills with the proper activities designed tobuild upon whatever it is that their child has apropensity for. As a child used to spend hisformative years in school, there is a growingacceptance that the role of teachers who arethe guide of the child becomes crucial.

Since the teachers are the ones whoare in control of a child’s destiny as a drivingforce in the education sector, they are to trytheir best to become a role model while inpursuit of the national education promotionprogrammes which could be driven by skills, knowledge and better management.

Mystery behind rising sea levels unlockedlocations that are vulnerableto storm surges or the influx ofsalt water into aquifers orcoastal fields. In its 2007 FourthAssessment Report, the IPCCsaid the oceans would rise bybetween 18 and 59cm by thecentury’s end. But thisestimate did not factor in meltwater from the mightyGreenland and Antarctic icesheets.

A study published lastyear by the Oslo-based ArcticMonitoring and AssessmentProject (AMAP) said sealevels would rise, on currentmelting trends, by 90cm to 1.6mby 2100. The study has beenpublished in the journalNature Geoscience.

LONDON, 23 May—Researches have identified thegap, which could be animportant missing piece of thepuzzle in estimates for pastand current sea-level changesand for projections of futurerises. Global sea levels rose byan average of 1.8mm per yearfrom 1961-2003, according todata from tide gauges.

But the main question ishow much of this can bepinned to global warming.

In its landmark 2007report, the UN’s Nobel-winning IntergovernmentalPanel on Climate Change(IPCC) ascribed 1.1mm per yearto thermal expansion of theoceans —water expands whenit is heated — and to melt waterfrom glaciers, icecaps and theGreenland and Antarcticaicecaps.

That left 0.7mm per yearunaccounted for, a mysterythat left a number of scientistswondering if the data werecorrect or if there were somesource that had eludedeveryone.

A team led by YaduPokhrel of the University ofTokyo insist that the answerlies in water that is extractedfrom underground aquifers,

rivers and lakes for humandevelopment but is neverreplenished.

The water ultimatelymakes it to the ocean throughrivers and evaporation in thesoil, they note.

Groundwater extraction isthe main constituent ofadditions that account for themystery gap, according to theirpaper, which is based oncomputer modelling.

“Together, unsustain-able groundwater use, artificialreservoir water impounding,climate-driven change interrestrial water storage andthe loss of water from closedbasins have contributed a sea-level rise of 0.77mm per yearbetween 1961 and 2003, about42pc of the observed sea-levelrise,” it said. The probe seeksto fill one of the knowledgegaps in the complex science ofclimate change.

Researchers admitted tomany unknowns about howthe oceans respond towarming, and one of them issea-level rise, an importantquestion for hundreds ofmillions of coastal dwellers.

Just a tiny rise, if repeatedyear on year, can eventuallyhave a dramatic impact in

much larger than Mercury, may completely disintegratewithin 100 million years, a blinkof an eye in cosmic terms, researchers at the Massa-chusetts Institute ofTechnology and NASA said.

The researchers foundthe dusty planet circles itsparent star every 15 hours —one of the shortest planetorbits ever observed — andsaid such a short orbit mustbe very close to the star, suggesting the planet couldbe heated to a temperature ofabout 3,600 degreesFahrenheit. CHICAGO, 23 May—Anew storage technique makesit possible for edible flowersto maintain a higher quality, making them available to morecooks, US researchers said.

Flowers have a largesurface-area-to-volume ratioand many delicately attachedparts making them susceptibleto petal loosening, discoloration and wilting, the

researchers said. Comparedwith other kinds of flowers, edible flowers are even morevulnerable to post-harvestquality loss than cut flowers, because their stems are cutvery short and they are storedwithout additional watersupply.

Currently, edible flowersare often packed in clam shellcontainers and must be used

within two to five days ofharvest, which requires airtransportation to reach mostregions. The study, publishedin the Journal of FoodScience, compared a newcontrolled release technologyalong with modifiedatmosphere packag-ing to thepacking technique that iscurrently being used. “We are excited aboutthis filament, because we thinkthe intense star formation wesee in its galaxies is related tothe consolidation of thesurrounding supercluster,”astrophysicist Kristen Coppinat McGill University in Canadasaid.

The intergalactic filam-ent, containing hundreds ofgalaxies, spans 8 million light-years and links two of the threeclusters that make up asupercluster known asRCS2319, a distant objectwhose light has taken morethan seven billion years toreach us.

Thesevoluntary endeavours were borne out selflessly and inzest by one and all, some oldies, in spite of creeping oldage, doddering, feeble in body but still virile in mind, exchanging each other’s shortcomings (pains in back, knees and joints, hard of hearing, dimming eye sights, forgetfulness) with mirth and laughter, joining the fun ofthe moment. In such contemplative mood my memory raced

back a thousand years along heritage trajectory to theBagan Era bloom of literature, culture, fine arts etc. It wassaid that the Baganites talked in verses and riddlesmanifested in high literacy. Most literary works: prose, drama, and verse were based in the Buddhist teachings, scriptures and jatakas, and also touched on nature andsocial environment, sights and scenes. Such high literacywas propagated by monastic training and instructionthrough many significant dynasties witnessing literarytalent of unmatched quality both among the scholar monksand laymen. I had taken Optional Myanmar in my intercombination for two years at Mandalay University (1947-49), and was enthralled by such gems of Myanmar literarycontributions equal to none. Famous names magnificentlydecked the heritage halls of fame where modern punyreplicas could never be matched. Ashin Maha Silavumsa,Ashin Maha Rathasara, the famous four scholar monksprophesized by the growth of four pay trees, WungyiPadetharaja the rural Myanmar poet as Wordsworth was anEnglish one. Then comes versatile dramatist U Ponnya,Myanmar Shakespeare, Myanmar soldier poet MyawadyMingyi U Sa, Prince poet Nat Shin Naung and forlornprincess Hlaing Hteik Khaung Tin. These accomplishedscholars shone with infinite dedication to their selflessliterary endeavours to leave fitting legacies for futuregenerations yet unborn. Successive powerful andbenevolent Myanmar kings rendered royal patronage, fittinghonours and citations that a hundred flowers may bloom.

The momentum of literary mainstream continued butwith dimmed luster during the British Occupation Period. However there was a fresh literary wind with the introductionof Myanmar translation of epic English classics and thefamous Arabian Nights among many others. And there wasthe new literary movement Khitsan Sarpay pioneered bythe new elite University Graduates, with enduring fame.

The first formally designated Writer’s Day SarsotawNay was held on 1st Waxing Day of Nattaw 1306 (15th

November 1944).It will now be 69 years since its inceptionthis Sarsotaw Day—2013. After Independence, SarpayBeikman was formed with the slogan ‘to dispel darknessand bring light.’ Literary competitions were organized tonurture new talent. Aspiring writers and poets endeavouredto sharpen their talents by competing and prizes weregiven as incentive. Following that came the need to readand select the most deserving, selflessly, competently, with righteous dedication without bias or favour. Thus therole of the scholars, intellectuals rendering their wealth ofexperience voluntarily in the selection process weremobilized and respectfully honoured.

Such voluntary dedication was not confined toscrutiny and selection of published books and manuscripts.More in-depth works of research, collections andcompilations were undertaken by these doyen scholars. The wide range of such tasks included compilation ofliterary references, compilation of dictionaries, researchinto documents of archival and heritage value, researchpaper presentation on forums and conferences, preparationof fact books, books on the state of the nation, annualliterary and position reports etc.

The present occasion was one of such felicitations. Itwas indeed the heritage of our forefathers and it is thebounden duty of the successors all those concerned thatbe, to propagate and perpetuate this hallowed literary andcultural tradition deservingly. Maybe just a few werehonoured with respect and gratitude. And there remainsmany, yet unknown, unacknowledged, unhonoured andunsung. But these intellectuals rendered theiraccumulative knowledge, experience expertise not forfavour or pelf, but for the joy of doing so. And by itself theyalready had their rewards, the piti of contributing tosociety. What I have written now as a memorablecontribution is just brushing the tip of the iceberg or thehydrofoil approach. There are many who can do muchmore and I encourage them to do so.

Iran to keep lower grade uraniumenrichment, says expert

TEHERAN, 23 May—Iranwill maintain lower gradeenrichment activities thoughit is likely to agree to suspendits 20-percent uraniumenrichment duringWednesday’s nuclear talkswith the world’s major powers,an Iranian expert has said.

If the InternationalAtomic Energy Agency(IAEA) and P5+1 countries, namely, the five permanentmembers of the UN securityCouncil plus Germany, agreethat Iran has the right to enrichuranium up to 3.5 percent for

civilian use, Iran will likelygive up production of 20percent enriched uranium.

“That is a kind ofsolution (to Iran’s nuclearprogramme),” Dr SadeqZibakalam, a professor ofpolitical science withTeheran University, said inan interview with Xinhua onTuesday.

If Iran agrees to suspendproduction of 20 percentenriched uranium, it willdefinitely ask for lifting someWestern sanctions in return,Zibakalam said. “Of course,

Iran would say what aboutthe sanctions? Now whatabout something in return?”said the Iranian scholar.

After the previous roundof nuclear talks between Iranand the P5+1 in Istanbul ofTurkey on 14 April, with bothsides describing the talks aspositive, Iranian officialshave incessantly urgedWestern countries to lift somesanctions against Teheranbefore or during thefollowing round of nucleartalks on Wednesday.

NEW DELHI,23 May—Buried in recent monthlydata for wholesale prices inIndia, the wild gyrations of ahumble vegetable tell the taleof an economy trapped ininflation by its own rigidities.

Back in December, aftera bumper harvest of potatoes, furious farmers dumpedtonnes of their crop on roadsin protest over a crash inprices: four months later, theannual wholesale inflationrate of the potato is gallopingat 53 percent.

In street markets and onthe handcarts of vegetablehawkers, the rise has beeneven steeper, a shock formillions of Indians who laytheir tables each day withcurries made of onions,

The number of visitorsto the Caribbean islandcountry reached 1.24 millionin the first four months of thisyear, up 5.2 percent over thesame period in 2011, thebureau said, adding that therecord figure produced a 12-percent increase in revenue.

In April alone, Cubareceived 288,523 tourists,13,122 more than the samemonth in 2011, the NBS said.

Canada remains thebiggest source of tourists, followed by France,Argentina, Germany, Russiaand Mexico.

TOKYO, 23 May—Japan’s trade deficit in April hit 520billion yen (about 6.5 billion US dollars) amid expandingdemand for oil and gas imports, a government report said onWednesday.

The deficit figure was the biggest for the recordingmonth since the government data was collected in 1979. Thevalue of imports for April surged 8.0 percent from a yearearlier to 6,087 billion yen, while exports climbed 7.9percent to 5,567 billion yen, according to the report releasedby the Finance Ministry.

The world’s third largest economy had recorded theworst trade deficit in the fiscal year 2011 which ended inMarch due to rising imports of oil and gas after the 11 Marchdisasters last year.

The devastating earthquake and tsunami that hitnortheastern Japan last year not only caused disruptions inthe supply chain of auto parts but also triggered a nuclearcrisis that led to suspension of reactors. Currently, all of thenation’s 50 commercial reactors are off-line, leading to apower shortage across the country.

The appreciation of the yen was also cited by thegovernment as a factor for the rising deficit.

While Japan’s imports grew, its exports also showedstrong momentum. The nation’s exports marked the secondstraight month of climb thanks to the shipments to the UnitedStates and the Middle East, the ministry said.

Exports to the United States surged 42.9 percent to 959billion yen, while the figure for China, Japan’s biggesttrading partner, contracted 7.1 percent to 995 billion yen.

Atop California-based company SpaceX’ own Falcon 9rocket, the Dragon capsule rocketed into the sky from CapeCanaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

Charles Bolden, administrator of US space agencyNASA, told reporters at Cape Canaveral that Tuesday’slaunch ushers in a new era of space flight for both the spaceagency and the United States.

“We’re now back on the brink of a new future, a futurethat embraces the innovation the private sector brings to thetable,” Bolden said. “The significance of this day cannot beoverstated.”

The launch is an important step for NASA and the UnitedStates, which currently has no means of independentlyreaching space. NASA relies on the Russian space agency toferry US astronauts to orbit.

“What’s really important is not control, as much as it isthe fact that the United States will once again be in the lead, will be providing our own vehicles to take our own astronautsand cargo to the International Space Station,” Bolden said.“It’s fine to rely on partners, but that’s not where the greatestnation in the world wants to be.”

CHICAGO, 23 May—Pakistani President Asif AliZardari arrived in Chicago onSaturday for a NATO summit towhat could be a chilly receptionif a hoped-for deal allowingtrucks to again supply alliancetroops in Afghanistan fails to

materialize. While Westernofficials sought to portrayZardari’s presence as a sign ofimproving NATO-Pakistan ties, possible friction at the meetingunderscores the challengesNATO countries face as theystruggle to ensure a stable futurefor Afghanistan after Westerntoops withdraw. Westernleaders, who sometimes differ intheir visions for the best way toend the war, speak with onevoice when they describe

Pakistan as the lynchpin toAfghanistan’s future security— or continued conflict.

“We can’t solve theproblems in Afghanistanwithout a positive engagementof Pakistan,” NATO Secretary-General Anders FoghRasmussen said hours beforeZardari’s arrival, repeating arefrain from NATO leaders thatPakistan must do more to actagainst militants who launchattacks from the country’s tribalareas. Zardari’s decision toaccept a last-minute invitationto attend the summit in PresidentBarack Obama’s home town wasan abrupt reversal after monthsof diplomatic estrangement.Islamabad had made clear that

Obama’s top aides were notwelcome in Pakistan.

It was also initially seen asa sign that Islamabad was on theverge of reopening supplyroutes through Pakistan thatare crucial for NATO troops inAfghanistan. But now it is farfrom clear that a deal on thosesupply lines is imminent.

“It is time for them to makea decision,” said a US official.“Patience is not exhausted butit’s wearing thinner on the USside.” In a sign of US frustration, the White House said this weekthat Obama had no plans tomeet with Zardari individually, although he is scheduled tomeet with Afghan PresidentHamid Karzai.—Reuters
