Learning Goals Use verbal ordinal terms
Materials• Farm Animal Counters• 13 index cards—4 to represent the animals in Oscar Is Cold
(hare, magpie, fox, Milagros the bear); one each to represent numerals 1–4; 5 to represent number order words (first, second, third, fourth, last)
• sentence strip holder• four adhesive dots for each child (all the same color)• copies of the “Our Animal Friends” reproducible page (one
per child)• 2 sheets of 8” X 12” cardstock or construction paper• bookbinding materials
Whole Group1.Before the lesson, have children recall the animals who
helped Oscar in Oscar Is Cold. As each animal is named, show the card that represents it and place it in the sentence strip holder in no particular order. Explain that today you want to try to remember which animal helped Oscar first, which was second, and especially which animal helped him finally get warm.
2.As each animal meets Oscar during the fourth read of Oscar Is Cold, find the card that represents that animal and rearrange the animal cards so they are in the correct order. Match each animal to the corresponding numeral card and ordinal term. When Milagros meets with Oscar, match it to numeral card 4 and both the ordinal terms fourth and last.
3.Talk about animal friends. Oscar had animal friends who helped him feel special and not alone. Do you have any animal friends? Would you like to have animal friends? If your animal friends could be pretend animal friends, what kinds of animals would be your friends? Discuss children’s responses.
4.Model the following procedure for partners:a. Using a copy of the “Our Animal Friends” reproducible,
select an animal counter, identify it (using the correct word to name the animal), and place it in the first section. Explain how this animal could be your friend.
b. Select a second animal counter, name it (using a pretend animal name so children understand that the counters can represent something else), and place it in the second section. Explain how this animal could be your friend.
c. Repeat for the third and fourth animals.

PartnersDistribute an “Our Animal Friends” reproducible page and some Farm Animal Counters to each pair of children. Support children as they describe and place their animal friends on the reproducible.
IndividualsCongratulate children on working together to practice. Distribute copies of the “Our Animal Friends” reproducible page and four adhesive dots to each child. Have them repeat the activity they did with their partners, but this time they will need to draw their animal friends using an adhesive dot
to represent each one. Model showing how a dot can show special animal friends. For example, place two small triangles on a dot for ears, add whiskers, and it becomes a cat.
