Cheers for picking up a copy of the July, August edition of Fourth Quarter. Another great edition of Fourth Quarter

It has been frantic at the Ozsports HQ with our latest project taking to the World Wide Web airwaves with our Saturday

morning sports show “Ozsports FM with one show under our belts and one live broadcast from the South Australian

Women’s Football League match between West Adelaide and Ingle Farm. West Adelaide winning for team mate Cathe-

rine Mulvihill who played her 300th game.

Talking about Catherine Mulvihill she will be a regular on Ozsports FM both in the studio and live from the Women’s

Football matches.

Ozsports welcomes Kristy Williams and Narelle Smith to Ozsports FM who join the Crew and will be covering the Wom-

en’s Football League matches.

Ozsports FM will be out on the road broadcasting live from the South Australian Road Runners Club’s Running Festival on

Sunday the 24th of August from outside of the newly redeveloped Adelaide Oval. Ozsports FM will have plenty of guests

and sports news and interviews and plenty of music. If you are in Adelaide, South Australia and got nothing to do from

7am onwards pop down to Adelaide Oval and meet the Ozsports FM Crew or register to take part in the Running Festival.

For more information on the South Australian Road Runners Club’s Running Festival check out the story in this edition of

Fourth Quarter.

With the start of the 2014 South Australian Gridiron season just around the corner the Huddle will be back for 2014 with

Chris Guscott at the helm it will be a great Gridiron season with new segments in the show and hopefully will be airing on

Channel 44 Adelaide’s Community TV Channel.

Probably the most exciting news is Ozsports has a new website which goes officially live at the end of August. The new

address is http://www.ozsportsonline.com

The site will have new sections and opportunities to promote sports in a new way to our visitors. The website is more

responsive to laptops, pc’s and tablets and IPhones.

Legends Football League Australia announces South Australian team Adelaide Arsenal

The crash-tackling women of the Legends Football League Australia will hit SA for the first time next summer under the name the Adelaide Arsenal.

The Arsenal will be based at Coopers Stadium in Hindmarsh from October, joining inaugural LFL Australia clubs New South Wales Surge, Western Australia Angels, Victoria Maidens and Queensland Brigade.

Day 2 Of Fiji Pro Culminates In Clean Barrels At Cloudbreak Wednesday, 4 June 2014

The Fiji Pro, stop No. 5 of 11 on the 2014 Samsung Galaxy ASP World Championship Tour (WCT), ran through Round 2 and half of Round 3 today. Day two of competition saw 18 surfers eliminated as the world’s best battled in three-to-five foot (1 - 1.5 metre) surf at Cloud-break. Tiago Pires (PRT) caused the upset of the day in Round 2 after matching up against C.J. Hobgood (USA). Both surfers looked on form but Pires, despite struggling to find a wave in the early stages, pounced at the 20-minute mark amassing a 7.77 and taking the lead. With sev-en minutes on the clock the 2001 ASP World Champion was left chasing a score that never came. Pires moves onto Round 3 after elimi-nating one of the most consistent performers at the Fiji Pro. “C.J. (Hobgood) is one of the best surfers out there and I knew it was going to be a tough heat,” said Tiago Pires. “I was a bit stressed at the beginning of the heat but after I got that seven I felt more confident. I was really disappointed after my heat yesterday, it was one of my lowest scores in ASP history, but I kept my nerve and I knew I had something to show. I really like surfing backside in these powerful waves.” Reigning three-time ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) bounced back from his Round 1 loss yesterday to win through Rounds 2 and 3. Fanning defeated dangerous wildcard Wiggolly Dantas (BRA) and Alejo Muniz (BRA) with sharp turns and carves and difficult tube rides and is now through to Round 4. “I’d love to win this event,” said Mick Fanning. “Kelly has had a strangle hold on it for a long time. There are so many great surfers out here that are so good, so a lot can happen.” Nat Young (USA), fresh from a Round 2 victory against compatriot Brett Simpson, took to the water alongside Kai Otton (AUS) for a battle of the goofy-footers. Despite a quiet start Young posted an excellent 8.93 for a solid barrel and took a commanding lead. While Otton dis-played his full forehand repertoire, Young was able to add an additional 7.40 at Cloudbreak to secure his place in Round 4. “I’m feeling good and I had a lot of fun out there,” said Nat Young. “I got a lot of waves and I kept getting barrels so that was fun. I get to surf the non-elimination Round so at the least I get two more heats and I’m looking forward to it. My goal for Fiji is to do better than I did last year, when I got a 9th place.” Michel Bourez (PYF) gave the performance of the event in Round 3 Heat 3. He matched up against Jeremy Flores (BRA), who previously took out Mitch Crews (AUS) in Round 2, in barreling conditions at Cloudbreak. Bourez put on a clinic, posting a 9.50 and a 9.20 while throwing away an 8.33. Flores suffered a broken board on his first wave and was unable find the score needed to back up a 7.67. Flores leaves the event with an equal 17th place and Bourez moves on to Round 4. “The conditions turned on during my heat,” said Michel Bourez. “It was very, very positive for me to be out there and get barrelled. I’m not going to quit and I’m not going to give up. I feel like it’s everyone’s chance to win. You just have to stay positive and stick with your game. Getting two 9’s and and an 8 in my heat is amazing, I was going crazy out there.” Round 2 Heat 4 saw South African Jordy Smith take on Brazilian Filipe Toledo. Smith got off to a quick start, throwing his powerful frame into a flurry of backhand blasts. Toledo, having previously despatched compatriot Jadson Andre, hunted the barrel early on with little suc-cess. Despite this he went on to secure set waves of his own, assaulting them with speed, versatility and progression to take the win late in the affair. Toledo secures his place in Round 4, bettering his 25th place finish at last year's Fiji Pro. “The heat started slow but got much better,” said Filipe Toledo. “I started to focus on the barrels and doing some big turns. I’m a bit sad about not always getting the results I want but I just need to keep doing well in each heat and making it through to the next Round.” Australian powerhouses Owen Wright and Bede Durbidge reveled in the ideal afternoon Cloudbreak conditions, with Durbidge establish-ing an early lead due to a series of ferocious backhand snaps. Wright got off to a slower start, but eventually locked into one of the best waves of the day. The goofy-footer unloaded a big forehand carve that set him up for a deep barrel ride that was rewarded with a near-perfect 9.33. With seconds remaining, Durbidge belted another wave, but his 7.50 fell shy of the score needed to surpass Wright, who moves on to Round 4.

South Australian sport stars join Fair Enough campaign to stamp out abuse from parents directed at children and officials

They are spearheading a new Fair Enough campaign — involving educational videos and signs at venues — to change the cul-ture of anger and aggression that is driving children away from competitive sport.

Former Thunderbird Natalie von Bertouch, Adelaide 36er Luke Schenscher and Redback cricketer Gary Putland have given their support for the campaign recording a video to remind parents to treat everyone, from umpires to the volunteers, with respect.

The video, in which the sports identities witness first-hand the ugly side of junior sport, will be handed to parents to watch when they sign their children up at sporting clubs.In the 5-minute video von Bertouch, who is filmed watching a junior match at ETSA stadium, cringes as she hears comments from the stands.

“When we’re playing we’ve got 2 or 3000 people watching us so we don’t actually here those (abusive) comments,” she says in the video.

“When you are here at a junior game you can hear everything that the parents are saying on court and that’s really hard emo-tionally for those kids to deal with that.”

Under the Fair Enough campaign sporting clubs have started erecting warning signs at junior competitions to remind parents that their bad behaviour will not be tolerated.

The signs, tailored for specific sports, include messages such as: “These are children, this is a game, the coaches volunteer, the referees are hu-man this is not the A-League or the World Cup”.

The signs have been rolled out to SA sporting clubs since mid-May.

Similar signs have been used in the US for a number of years Sports Min-ister Leon Bignell said we want everyone to be out on the field doing the right thing.

“The kids get embarrassed. They can hear their mum or dad saying inap-propriate things.

“(Then) kids don’t necessarily want to participate in sport, not because they don’t love their sport but because of their parents.”

A study by Flinders University researcher Sam Elliott last year in the “Ugly parent syndrome” revealed that the behaviour caused children to lose motivation, which caused result, in quitting sport.

Netball SA Chief executive Ben Scales said this campaign provided the opportunity to educate players, coaches, parents and supporters to show respect for the game and those involved.

“We’re in the process of rolling out the campaign across the state through education sessions and the distribution of campaign collateral and have received some really positive feedback about the campaign,” he said.

PARENTS who abuse officials and children from the sidelines are in the firing line as the State Goverment, sporting codes and elite athletes unite to stamp out the ugly side of junior sport.

As a former professional baseballer who played for the LA Dodgers, Craig said he had seen a lot of sledging in his time but there

was no place for it in junior sport.

“It’s very important that these guys are encouraged both when they are doing well or when they make mistakes there’s no point in

being negative,” he said.

“I have witnessed it, when the parents first start watching they don’t

know how to react in their first year or two. It’s that competitive nature,”

he said.

“The definitely would feel embarrassed. I’ve seen more in the carparks

where parents haul up their children next to the cars and say things.

“Even behind close doors not right, you need to show kids as much sup-

port as possible”.

300 gamer Catherine Mulvihill a true legend

by Kristy Williams The dying seconds of her 300th game, Catherine Mulvihill, a ruckman

and defender for West Adelaide by trade, didn’t expect to find herself

in front of goal with Sherrin in hand. Certainly not in the forward line

anyway.

Catherine “Mulvi” Mulvihill is the epitome of humble. You put forward the idea to her that she should fulfill the footy fairytale with a goal in her milestone match and she’s uncomfortable.

“Why is everyone making such a fuss?” she said. She’d rather stop the winning goal than score it.

If you’re a teammate of Mulvi’s, you know she’s got your back. She might not pull off the spectacular, but she is extraordinarily steady. She’ll never succumb to cheap shots and can’t be enticed by sledging. She just smiles. Constantly.

Sarah Maserio, a longtime teammate – and now oppo-

nent – pointed out that “She’s always willing to laugh at herself…she just loves having a run and kick with mates.”

After making her debut in the inaugural South Australian women’s league in 1991, she’d never had too many media requests. She’s the hottest property in town at the moment though, but remains unperturbed.

For her, footy is only about the team. You can’t rely on individual brilliance to win footy games; you rely on communication, shepherds, blocks and unselfishness. Unselfishness is Mulvi’s middle name.

“She doesn’t think she’s special even though she’s been the dominant ruckman for 10 plus years,” Maserio said.

Well known in the female football community, Mulvi has done it all. Amongst winning 12 premiership flags, including a best-on-ground performance in the 2005 Grand Final, she was given life membership of the SAWFL in 2009.

Current SAWFL president and long-time teammate and opponent Narelle Smith says despite her lack of flair, she is one of the most reliable players around.

“She’s just solid – she gets the job done,” Maserio agrees, pointing to her sportsmanship and hard, fair contested footy style that sees her held in such high esteem by opponents who are getting flattened by her.

Winning the Carmel Laube Players’ Player award in 2011 is Mulvi’s most treasured moments, not only for the fact it highlights her respect among peers, but because Carmel was a close friend who was taken far too young.

This was the moment that changed Mulvi as a footy player and a person. It galvanized the team and spurred them onto multi-ple premierships.

“It was a really tough year… but it made our friendships stronger.”

With 40 seconds to go, she had the chance to put the icing on the proverbial cake and fulfill the footy fairytale. The shot drifted wide of the mark, but Mulvihill was still smiling; same as always. She’s kicked plenty of proverbial goals in her long career and noth-ing could dampen her spirits.

Friendships that still continue to this day, despite the time passing. Mulvi even thinks her friend had a hand in the one-point Grand Final victory in 1998, despite watching from the clouds.

With her team up and only seconds remaining, the opposition were running into a open goal and an upset victory was imminent. The ball, however, had other ideas and hit the woodwork.

Carmel got behind her former tea, and touched their lives forever. It’s a legacy of camaraderie, mateship and teamwork that Ma-serio says has carried down through the generations.

This experience carried Mulvi into challenge after challenge and is what keeps her coming back each week after 25 years.

“I just love the challenge of a team coming together,” Mulvi said.

“A champion team beats a team of champions any day.”

It’s kept her ticking all these years and has led her to triathlons as she winds up her career this season. The fact that she has conned her former teammate Sarah Masiero into competing in an Olympic-sized triathlon with her shows just how highly she is regarded by all her mates.

What a lady. What a legend.

Aussies sizzle at Para-cycling World Cup in Spain

Australia have earned more gold abroad, this time at the Para-cycling Road World Cup in Segovia, Spain.

Melbourne’s Carol Cooke was the big winner, claiming both the time trial and road race crowns in the T2 category.

"All in all it was a great weekend for me results wise with two wins out of two races," said Cooke. "I had some fantastic training while I was here and I am now looking forward to the World Championships in four weeks time."

In extreme heat, Alistair Donohoe and Sue Powell claimed road races crowns in the C5 Men and C4 Women’s categories respectively while Hannah MacDougall finished 3rd in the C4 women.

David Nicolas, Alex Green and Stuart Tripp all collected time trial silver in their respective categories while Sue Powell earned bronze in the C4 women’s time trial.

Mick Curran and Matt Formston weren’t able to finish the Tandem road race due to their chain breaking at the 60km mark.

"That's racing, we'll go home to train and get ready or World's at the end of August," said Curran.

Over the entire weekend the Australian team came away with a total of 10 medals - 4 Gold, 3 Silver and 3 Bronze.

The team now prepares for the Para-cycling World Championships starting in South Carolina, USA from August 28 – 31.
