    Enduring TemptationKey Text

    James 1:12

Blessed is the man that endureth

temptation: for when he is tried,he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to

    them that love him.

    Enduring TemptationInitial Words

Sure, temptations are real, sin isreal, and the battle against self is

very real. But God is real, too, and throughHim we can more than overcome

the temptations that brew inside us,just waiting to take us down.

Enduring Temptation1. The Root of Temptation

    James 1:13-15 NKJV

Letno one say when he is tempted,I am tempted by God; for God

cannot be tempted by evil.... But eachone is tempted when he is drawn

away by his own desires and enticed.

Then, when desire has conceived, itgives birth to sin, and sin when it is

    full grown, brings forth death.

    1. The Root of TemptationIn the Mind

Not only is God not the author ofevil, He is not the source of

temptation either. Evil itself is thesource of temptation.

    According to this passage, the

problem lies within us, which is themain reason its so hard to resist.

    1. The Root of TemptationIn the Mind

Thus, the battle against sin beginsin the mind.

The truth is that we choose to sin.No one can force us (Rom. 6:1618).

Our own desires lure and entice us,

and when we give in to them, theyfinally hook and entrap us.

    1. The Root of TemptationIn the Mind

James clearly separates temptationfrom sin. Being tempted from withinis not sin. Even Jesus was tempted.

The problem is not temptation itselfbut how we respond to it. Having a

sinful nature is not, in and of itself, sin; however, allowing that sinfulnature to control our thoughts and

    dictate our choices is.

    1. The Root of TemptationWhen Lust Conceives

When a wrong desire is nurtured, sinis conceived.Sin, when it iscompletely grown, gives birth to

    death(James 1:15, authors translation).

At its root, sin begins with distrustingGod. Satan, using the same methodby which he deceived angels (Rev.

    12:4, 7

    9), raised doubts in Eves

    1. The Root of TemptationEvery Good and Perfect Gift

Although sin gives birth to death, Godis the Source of life. He is the Fatherof lights(James 1:17), a reference to

    the Creation.

God gives us birth to a new life, which

is the greatest gift we can get fromabove. This new birth, is the result of

Gods purpose and will for us.

Enduring Temptation2. Our Words and Temptation

    James 1:19, 20 NKJV

    Let every man be swift to hear,slow to speak, slow to wrath;

for the wrath of man does notproduce the righteousness of God.

    2. Our Words and TemptationSlow to Speak

Gods Word is powerful. But so arehuman words. How often have we

spoken words that later we wish we

could take back?Unfortunately, just being aware of

how hurtful wrong words can be,and how destructive anger is, doeslittle to help us get ourselves under

    control.

    2. Our Words and TemptationSlow to Speak

Problems arise when we stoplistening to God and to each other.

    Arguments ensue when listeningstops.

    Talking begins to accelerate and

    anger builds.

    2. Our Words and TemptationSlow to Speak

James juxtaposes Godsrighteousness with human wrath. As long as we rely on what bubbles

up naturally from our sinful nature, the creative power of Gods Word isblocked, and our own unhelpful oreven hurtful words arise instead.James tells us to be careful with

    what we say.

Enduring Temptation3. Gods Word and Temptation

James 1:21 NKJVTherefore aside all filthiness and

    overflow of wickedness, and receive

    with meekness the implanted word,

which is able to save your soil.

    3. Gods Word and TemptationSaved by Receiving

This verse concludes all that has beensaid so far about faith and salvation.

It is an appeal to put away all impurity

and separate ourselves from wickedness.Like Jesus, James decries the humantendency to be so concerned with

outward appearance, because God isconcerned above all with the

    condition of our hearts.

    3. Gods Word and TemptationSaved by Receiving

In the Greek translation of the OldTestament, the wordfilthy (ryparos)is used in only one passage:

Zechariah 3:3, 4, where Joshua, thehigh priest, represents sinful Israel.

God takes away the high priests filthygarments and clothes him with aclean robe, symbolizing Israels

    forgiveness and cleansing.

    3. Gods Word and TemptationSaved by Receiving

This doesnt mean that we must bewithout sin before we can be clothedin Christs righteousness. If that were

true, who could be saved? It means that we must completely

surrender to Him, and allow Him tocreate us into His image. Christsperfect robe of righteousness will

    then cover us.

    Enduring TemptationFinal Words

The plan of redemptioncontemplates our complete recoveryfrom the power of Satan. Christ

always separates the contrite soulfrom sin. He came to destroy the

works of the devil, and He has madeprovision that the Holy Spirit shall beimparted to every repentant soul, to

keep him from sinning The Desire of Ages 311.
