The primary care physician plays a central role in the early detection and on-going

management of patients with gastrointestinal disorders. The 4th Annual GI

Issues for the Primary Care Physician will review best practice standards

through formal lectures, case presentations and question and answer

sessions. UCLA digestive disease faculty will share their specialized expertise

and audience participation is encouraged via response system during case

presentations and during the question and answer sessions. This agenda has

been specifically designed to offer practical approaches and solutions that

healthcare professionals may readily integrate into their daily practice.

Course Objectives1. Recognize and employ the most current treatment strategies in

gastroenterology patient encounters

2. Discuss the role of endoscopy in obesity and metabolic syndrome

3. Apply the updated colon cancer guidelines to the screening and surveillance of colon cancer

4. Understand the current challenges and controversies related to gastrointestinal endoscopy and carbapanem-resistent enterobacteriaceae (CRE) and other “superbugs”

Disclosure StatementThe FDA has issued a concept paper which classifies commercial support of scientific and educational programs as promotional unless it can be affirmed that the program is “truly independent” and free of commercial influence. In addition to independence, the FDA requires that nonpromotional, commercially supported education be objective, balanced, and scientifically rigorous. The policy further states that all potential conflicts of interest of the CME staff and faculty be fully disclosed to the program’s participants. In addition, Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education policy now mandates that the provider adequately manages all identified potential conflicts of interest prior to the program. We at UCLA fully endorse the letter and spirit of these concepts.
