God Is Near Part of The Big God Story JUST FOR FUN 2.12 Mark 6:45–51; Matthew 14:22–33 Jesus walks on water. In Jewish culture, the night was split into four sections or “watches.” The fourth watch of the night was the darkest hours just before dawn. Scripture tells us it wasn’t until the fourth watch of the night that Jesus met His disciples out on the water. When the disciples saw Jesus walking on the water they cried out, “It’s a ghost!” • How do you think the disciples felt when they realized Jesus was walking on water? • How do you think Peter felt when he stepped out onto the water? • How can you know God is near you? After reading Matthew 14:25–33, discuss the following together: (Insert name of child), may you always remember that God loves you. He chooses to be near you always. You can always trust in Him. One of the earliest ways your preschooler will learn responsibility for others is by sharing. Be sure to remind your child to take turns with toys when playing with other children. Teachable Moments date: A blessing to pray over your child: Fill a sink or a tub with water before you read the passage. Gather some objects that can float (cork, wood, hollow plastic) and some that can’t (rocks, metal). Spend some time playing; let your children try putting different objects in the water to see if they sink or float. Read Matthew 14:25–33. After you’ve finished reading, explain to them that Jesus was actually walking on the water. Ask them why they think the disciples were afraid at first when they saw Jesus.
