The Word Of God

First reading Genesis 22:1-2, 9-13, 15-18

Abraham is for Jews and Chrisans the

man of faith, oen called “our father in

faith”. In the biblical story, this faith is

frequently tested and never more so

than in the story we are about to hear.

Even though Abraham “passes” the test,

the story bristles with difficules and

remains very challenging for hearers

today, both Jews and Chrisans.

Second reading Romans 8:31-34

The challenge of the first reading sets us

up for a shock in the second reading.

God’s astonishing love for us is meas-

ured by a comparison with Abraham:

Abraham was not asked, in the end, to

give up his only son, but God did give up

his only Son…so much does he love us.

Gospel Mark 9:2-10

We all have our moments of spiritual

experiences and so did Jesus, as we are

about to hear. The core message for us

today, however, comes from the voice

the cloud, a great invitaon.

“Prayer is not asking. Prayer is put-

ting oneself in the hands of God, at

His disposition, and listening to His voice in the depth of our hearts.”

~ Mother Teresa

TRANSFIGURATION - “LISTEN TO HIM!”

As Jesus instructed his disciples, he checked out where

they were in their faith. “Who do you say I am?” Peter

answers in flying colours. “You are the Messiah”. Jesus

praises Peter. He then tells them about the fate he will

meet in Jerusalem. “The Son of Man will suffer and be

put to death”. They are shocked.

Then Jesus picks three to go to the top of Mount

Tabor. There he is transfigured before them. He is alight

with the glory of God. Moses and Elijah, the people of

the Old Testament who symbolise the Law and the

Prophets appear to him to confirm his mission. The

disciples are scared by the signs of God’s nearness yet

want it to connue. The cloud symbolised God’s

Presence and a voice came to them: “This is my beloved

Son – the Chosen One. Listen to Him”.

Jesus has been telling them of the way of the Cross he must walk but the Transfiguraon is

also a glimpse of resurrecon to confirm the faith of the apostle whatever happens along

the way. God will win.

As a follower of Jesus, you too are transformed into a new person . Are you afraid as well

as delighted? Are you ready to go into the cloud of God’s presence? Will you hear God’s

Voice?

Listen! God is explaining. “This is my Son, the Chosen One”. You are chosen to be here.

Allow yourself feel the privilege, the call of God to you. God gives this resurrecon sign of

glory. He tells you. “Listen to him! Listen to him!” Jesus will point out the way God is call-

ing you. But we must listen. Will I listen this Lent? Really slow down and listen? What voic-

es will I listen to?

Am I ready to be transformed? To be made “an Easter Per-

son” ? Do I feel chosen’? Do I expect the energy that raised

Jesus from the dead to be acve in me now, saturang me

with his Resurrecon fire and energy? (See Ephes. 1. 18-23)

That is what bapsm is about. This is what Lent is about.

Each generaon and each person must be transfigured,

must be made new. Fr Michael Screene

Daily Lenten Reflections

Can you recall a me when you had an ‘aha

moment’? One of those moments when

something suddenly makes perfect sense to you. It may have been a long

me coming, a combinaon of various pieces of a jigsaw fing together

or it may be an insight you received from prayer or spiritual pracce.

These are really special moments. We are never quite the same aer-

wards, something changes, even a small thing, but something in us

changes. These ‘aha’ moments even move us outside of ourselves or

beyond ourselves in some way. They are moments of transfiguraon.

This is what is happening to the disciples in today’s gospel: a very deep

and significant ‘aha moment’.

Peter is desperate to stay on the mountain in that blissful moment

with Jesus, so much so that he offers to build tents. One can understand

Peter’s request, aer such an occurrence of course he would want to

stay there. What moments of encounter in your own life do you recall?

An encounter where you simply did not want it to end? It may be some-

thing very deep and meaningful which gave you a glimpse of God or a

moment of complete contentment?

As with all blissful moments, the disciples must come down from the

mountaintop. Jesus’ way involves walking a very different path, a path

that will not be so easy. Jesus’ way is different to what Peter may have

had in mind. No doubt these moments of transfiguraon strengthen us

all for walking the more difficult paths.

WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES—THIRD NATIONAL COLLECTION

Dublin, Ireland has the great joy of hosng the 9th

World Meeng of Families that will take place in

just under seven month’s me from the 21 – 26

August 2018. The sense of excitement, expecta-

on and ancipaon is building by the day as we

prepare to welcome families from across Ireland

and across the world to our family gathering.

The World Meeng of Families was established in

1994 when Pope Saint John Paul II asked the Pon-

fical Council for the Family to establish an inter-

naonal gathering of prayer, catechesis and cele-

braon that would draw parcipants from

around the world and that would help to strengthen the bonds between families and bear witness to the crucial

importance of marriage and the family to all of society.

And, so the World Meeng of Families was established and to date it has been hosted in Rome, Rio de Janeiro,

Milan, Valencia, Mexico City and Philadelphia. Now it’s our turn here in Ireland because Pope Francis has

personally chosen Dublin to be the host city for the next World Meeng of Families and he has invited us to reflect

on the theme ‘The Gospel of the Family: Joy for the World’.

The main events of WMOF2018 will take place in Dublin but it is

also ancipated that related events, including the hosng of

internaonal groups, will take place all over the island of Ireland.

The following key moments make up the World Meeng of Families:

A Naonal Opening on Tuesday 21 August which will take place

simultaneously in each of the dioceses of Ireland;

A three day congress from 22-24 August in the RDS, Dublin;

A Fesval of Families on Saturday 25 August, comprising a

reflecve concert style event within a prayerful and joyful

atmosphere, in which personal stories of faith will be shared

by families from all connents;

A Closing Mass will be celebrated on Sunday 26 August with

thousands of people from Ireland and across the world.

Pope Francis has asked us to prepare for the 9th

World Meeng

of Families by reflecng on ‘Amoris Laea (The Joy of Love)’, his apostolic exhortaon released in 2016. Pope Fran-

cis believes that the family is good news for today’s world. The Amoris: Let’s Talk Family! Let’s Be Family! Pro-

gramme is a response to this request from Pope Francis.

We are inving families in our parish to join us on our journey of preparaon for the World Meeng of Families

and to be part of the events in Dublin from 21-26 August. Please support us by volunteering, registering to

aend and donang at our parish collecon today www.worldmeeng2018.ie
