Germany (Cont'd)weapon descriptionsSubmachineguns

ERMA MP.40 (1941): An easier to manufacture version of the MP.38. It is almost identical to the original weapon and there is no unfamiliarity penalty between them.Rifles

Haenel MaschinenKarabiner 42 (H) (1943): The first of two preproduction “combat trial” designs issued to troops before the StG.44 design was adopted. The MKb.42(H) fires from an open bolt using a striker and has a longer gas tub running along the top of the barrel than the later StG.44. The MKb.42(H) accepts the same magazines as the StG.44, or rather the later StG uses the magazines designed for the MKb.42, and can mount the same bayonet as the Kar.98k.

This weapon was produced and issued in small numbers, less than 500, and first deployed in combat trials by SS Division “Wiking”.Rheinmetall-Borsig Fallschirmjägergewher types I and III (1942 and 1945): These are the early and late versions of the FG.42 found on p. W95. Changes

in materials and design made for changes in the weight and cause virtually no parts to interchange between variations.Walther MaschinenKarabiner 42 (W) (1943): The second combat trials design for what would become known as an “assault rifle”. The MKb.42(W) is the

losing design, but the action was adapted into the Haenel design to form the MP.43 (aka StG.44). Deemed slightly more accurate than the Haenel design, the annular gas piston was much harder to manufacture and maintain, thus eliminating it from competition.Anti-Tank Rifles

Rheinmetall-Borsig Panzerbüsche 38 (1938): The more complicated predecessor to the PzB.39. The mechanism ejects the spent cartridge case automatically, and leaves the breech open for loading after firing. Ammunition used in the 1939 campaign against Poland used a steel core instead of tungsten and does 12d(2) pi damage, the ineffectual tear gas capsule is also present.

Rheinmetall-Borsig schwerer Panzerbüsche 41 (1941): A “heavy” anti-tank rifle, the sPzB.41 is a “squeeze bore” gun. Simply put, the bore is a cone and not a cylinder. At the breech end, the bore is 28mm narrowing to 20mm at the muzzle, this allows the pressure of the propellant to remain higher longer and gives more velocity to the round. The sPzb.41 fires a tungsten projectile with special skirts that collapse as the shot is forced down the barrel. It was scarcity of this tungsten that prevented wider issue of this weapon. Outwardly, the sPzB.41 resembles a small artillery piece, complete with a DR 30 gun shield. It is operated much the same way as an artillery gun too, with the empty casing being automatically ejected after firing.

Solothurn S18-1000 (1941): The final development of the S18-100, see p.W:FH33. This is a truly massive weapon for an infantryman to lug around, and by the time it entered service, useless in its intended role. Virtually all made ended up in Italian service. Loading is unique, to cock the bolt, a crank on the right side of the gun turns a sprocket witch winds up a chain, pulling the bolt to the rear for loading. This slows loading considerably, three seconds can be taken off the reload time if a round is left in the chamber when replacing the magazine, not always the safest idea. The layout of the gun prevents firing left handed. Several sources (including plastic model manufacturers) refer to this weapon as the PzB.41.

weapon descriptionsPistols

Koshikawa “Baby Nambu” (1911): A smaller version of the Nambu 4th year pistol firing unique ammunition. It was unpopular with officers, who had to purchase their own sidearms, because of its price compared to Western designs of similar performance.

Koshikawa Meiji 26 Shiki Kenju Revolver (1893): A serviceable double action, top-break revolver. Although a native Japanese design, it borrows heavily from the designs of other manufacturers.Submachineguns

Kokura 100 Shiki Kikantanju (1944 Version) (1944): An improved version to make the gun easier to produce.Rifles

Arisaka 38 Shiki Carbine (1905): Standard carbine version of the 38 Shiki Rifle (p. W95).Arisaka 44 Shiki Carbine (1911): A cavalry carbine, essentially a 38 Shiki Carbine equipped a knife bayonet that folds under the front stock.Arisaka 97 Shiki Rifle (1937): A sniper rifle based on the 38 Shiki Rifle. A wire bipod is mounted under the barrel, but it is flimsy.Arisaka 99 Shiki Short Rifle (1939): A shorter version of the 99 Shiki rifle. This was an attempt to bring the Imperial rifle into line with the thinking of the rest

of the world as far as rifle length is concerned, it is shorter than a traditional rifle and longer than a carbine, very much like a SMLE or K.98k. The 99 Shiki Short Rifle is equipped with a wire monopod and the sights have fold down “arms” to aid in firing at aircraft, neither of these features really works as intended.

Arisaka 2 Shiki Take-Down Rifle (1942): A parachutist's version of the 99 Shiki Short Rifle with a joint just in front of the receiver that allows the barrel and forend to be removed to shorten the overall length of the gun for jumping.Machineguns

Koishikawa 3 Shiki (1914): Japanese version of the French Hotchkiss Mle 14 (p. W:RH38). For reliable service, the cartridges must be lubricated with oil prior to feeding, while this prevents a Malf of 16, it tends to track dirt into the action, causing malfunctions and returning Malf to 16. Depending on how dusty conditions are, this can take between thirty and four hundred shots.

Nambu 1 Shiki (1941): A lightened and simplified version of the Nambu 92 Shiki.Nambu 92 Shiki (1932): An upgraded 3 Shiki chambered in the newer 7.7x58mmSR Type 92. 7.7x58mm Arisaka can also be used without problems.Nambu 93 Shiki (1933): A licensed copy of the Hotchkiss Mle 30 p. W:RH38.Nambu 97 Shiki (1937): A tank mounted version of the Czech ZB vz.26 p. W95.

weapon descriptionsSubmachineguns

Degtyarev PPD34/38 (1934): Issued in small numbers from 1934 until supplemented by the PPD40 in 1940 and replaced by the PPSh41 in 1941.Degtyarev PPD40 (1940): A PPD34/38 modified to accept an improved drum magazine.Sudayev PPS42 (1942): An extremely crude, yet effective, stamped steel submachinegun design developed to take advantage of materials and equipment on

hand during the siege of Leningrad. It takes the same 35 round box magazine as the PPSh41, but oddly not the 71 round drum.Sudayev PPS43 (1943): A refined version of the PPS42 designed after the siege of Leningrad was lifted. Combined production of the PPS42 and PPS43 is

around one million guns. The description on p. W96 is incorrect.Rifles

Mosin Nagant M-1891/30g PE (1932): Sniper version of the standard infantry rifle. The bolt is turned down to clear the 4x PE scope.Mosin Nagant M-1891/30g PU (1940): An improved version of the Mosin Nagant sniper rifle using the 3.5x PU scope originally developed for the sniper

version of the SVT-38.Mosin Nagant M-1938 (1939): A carbine version of the Mosin Nagant M-1891/30. It will accept the same bayonet as the M-1891/30.Mosin Nagant M-1944 (1944): The final version of the Mosin Nagant carbine, it is nearly identical to the M-1938 with the exception of a folding spike bayonet.Simonov AVS (1937): Something of an idea before its time, the AVS is one of the first attempts to provide the average infantryman with machinegun like

firepower. The full power 7.62x54mmR ammunition was brutally abusive to the action and most would be damaged in a very short period of time. The gun remained in service through the Winter War with Finland and was replaced by the SVT-38 despite the availability of an improved version that addressed nearly all of its shortcomings.

Tokarev SVT-38 (1939): A less refined predecessor of the SVT-40 (p. W95).Tokarev SNT-38 (1940): An SVT-38 selected for accuracy and equipped with a 3.5x PU scope. Very few made before the change to the SVT-40 type

weapons occurred.Tokarev SNT-40 (1940): An SVT-40 selected for accuracy and equipped with a 3.5x PU scope. The SNT-40 is the most numerous of the Soviet sniper rifles

and was frequently adopted by German troops.Machineguns

Maxim PM-1910 (1910): The nearly universal Maxim water-cooled machinegun chambered for 7.62x54mmR with a large water jacket filling hole so that snow could be used to fill it.
