Thetankerinthispackageisdoublehulled,has10pairsofwingtanks,2to8ofwhicharesubdividedintocentreandwingspaces.Eachtankhasitsownpump,ventlineandmanifold.Thereare2 ballastpumps.Theballasttankarrangementhasnotbeenspecified. However,thesimulatorshouldhaveitsownCargoOperationsManualwhichwillbeusedduringthe training.

EXERCISE 1 Ship and simulator familiarisation ObjectiveThepurposeofthisexerciseistohelpyoubecomefamiliarwiththeoperationofthesimulatorand thecargosystem.Itissuggestedthatduringthisfirstexercise,aballastpumpisstartedinorderfor aballastspacetobetoppedoff.Thiswillgiveyouanopportunitytopracticepump,lineandvalve control.ItisalsosuggestedthattheInertGassystemisstartedandthecargosystempressurised,in orderforyoutofamiliariseyourselfwiththeinertingprocess.

InformationThevesselhasjustdepartedfromdrydock,sothecargosystemisgasfreeandwillneedinerting. Allbunkers,freshwaterandballastareasperthenormalballastcondition,otherthentheforepeak ballasttank,whichneedstoppingup. Note:Itisappreciatedthatnotallliquidcargosimulatorswillhaveexactlythesamefunctions incorporated.Thefollowingaresuggestionsofsystemswithwhichyouneedtobefamiliar:1. 2. 3. 4. ItiscrucialthatBALLASTCONTROL,valves,levelandalarmfunctionsaremonitoredfrequentlyduring theseoperations. SomecargoesrequireaccurateCARGOTEMPERATURECONTROLfunctions,water,steamorthermal oil. AnumberofexercisesrequiretheuseofTANKWASHINGfunctions,supplyingeitherseaorfreshwater. AlmostallexercisesinvolveINERTGAS,NITROGENANDVENTINGARRANGEMENTS.Certain exerciseswillalsoincludeVAPOURRECOVERY,soaclosefamiliaritywiththesefunctionswillbe necessary. SometankpreparationrequirementswillinvolveMECHANICALVENTILATIONsothefunctionofthe fanssupplyingthisisimportanttomaster.

EXERCISE 3 Tank preparation washing and inerting ObjectiveThisexerciseisfocussedontheobjectiveofpreparingthevesseltostarttrading.Cargoordershave alreadybeenreceivedandtheseincludehighspecificationcargoeswhichwillrequirewellprepared tanks.Thisexercisewillinvolvethefinalstageofthepreparativeprocessinvolvingahotfreshwater washoftanks6CP&S,7CP&S,1P&S,2P&S.Inaddition,tanks5CP&Sneedtobeinertedwith nitrogen.

Information1. 2. Setupthetankwashingsystemandfreshwaterheatingarrangements,inordertowashthepairsof tanksdetailedaboveintheobjective,6CP&S,7CP&S,1P&S,2P&S. Intheinterestsofbestpractice,pressuretestthewashingsystempriortouse,atatestpressure marginallyabovetheworkingpressure.Thistestmaybecarriedoutwithcoldratherthanhotwater. Youmustdecidewhetherfreshorseawaterwillbeanappropriatemediumforthistest,notingthe preparationrequirementsofthenextcargointhosetanks. 5CP&Swillneedinertingwithnitrogen.Again,youmustdecidewhichmethodofinertingismost appropriateforthecircumstances:dilutionordisplacement. Considercarefullytheambienttemperatures,includingairandseatemperatures.Rememberthatvast differencesinsuchtemperaturesinsideandoutsideofthetankscouldresultincondensation.The resultantpotentialcargocontaminationissuescouldbecommerciallydamaging.Ensurethedewpointof thenitrogendestinedfor5CP&Sisoflowdewpoint,toensureadrytankatmosphere.

Ensureyoubecomewellpracticedwithdrainingandstrippingproceduresduringthiswashing operation,inthelightofthecargooperationstofollowinduecourse.

EXERCISE 9 Mid Second port loading, discharge & pre-wash ObjectivesThisexerciseisfocussedontherequirementtoperformapre-washofthetanksfromwhichCTChas justbeendischarged.

Information1. Thestatusofthecargotanksbeingworkedwillbesuchthatastaggerwillhavebeenestablishedin orderthatresourcesmaybetemporarilyconcentratedonthestartingofthewashingprogramme.This activityshouldinnowayunderminethemonitoringofotheroperations.Youshouldalsounderstandthat thepre-washneedswitnessingandrecordingbyaMARPOLcargoinspector. Oneoftheaimsoftheexerciseistorealisethebenefitofsoundforwardplanningandefficientresource management.Anumberofactivitieswillbeon-goingsimultaneously,andthemanagementofsuch formstheessenceofchemicaltankeroperations.Whilstmonitoringalladditionalactivities,10PandS requireapre-washimmediatelyuponcompletionoftheirdischarge.Thedurationandnumberofcycles ofthispre-washwillbedeterminedbyconsultationwiththetankersP&Amanual.Itissuggestedthat thetankwashingmachinesarerunfor40minutesineachtank,concurrently,inorderforthewashingto beefficient. Ensurethattheabovestepshavebeentakenpriortothesettingupandpre-washingofthenecessary tanks.Communicationswiththedeckwatchshouldremaineffective.Alsoitisgoodpracticetoadvise theterminalofthecommencementoftankwashing.Ensurethatthelines,valvesandpumpsaresetup accordinglyandthatthepumpsarestartedandpressurebroughtonthelines,followinggoodpractice.
