WELCOME TO YOUR ART CENTER!

Dear Friends,

Who’s thinking spring? We are!

The ice and snow will soon give way to Minnesota’s most colorful season, and nowhere will it be more brilliant than at White Bear Center for the Arts. We invite you to come on over and thaw out your creative flow. WBCA will be a busy place with a full range of new classes and clay offerings.

This spring WBCA will host our 40th Northern Lights Fine Arts Exhibition, in the beautiful Ford Family Gallery. This juried show will feature some of Minnesota and Wisconsin’s finest artists and is a great opportunity to build your artistic profile, resume, and portfolio. We encourage you to apply (see inside front cover for details).

As an organization undergoing tremendous evolution, we have a few important highlights to share regarding WBCA’s dynamic Board of Directors.

First, a very special thank you and round of applause for our friend and outgoing Board Chair, Robert Cuerden. Among his many roles here, Bob served as chair of the Building Search Committee in 2009-2010. After the successful (!) purchase of the building, he led the Building Design Committee over the next 18 months. Ultimately in 2012-2013, Bob confidently led the “Let’s build it!” Building Committee, and well, you know the rest! WBCA will be forever grateful for his superb strategic leadership and dedication. To our benefit, Bob will continue to serve another full year as Ex-Officio Director. Our heartfelt thanks to Bob for his enormous effort in leading this charge.

Additionally, we owe a tremendous debt to two other board member “over-achievers” who have completed six-year term limits: Roberta Johnson and Neil Johnston. Roberta fearlessly served four of her six years on the Executive Committee (one as Co-Vice Chair/three as Board Chair), leading us through the building acquisition and launch of a $3M capital campaign. Robbie’s commitment to WBCA’s financial wellbeing played a critical role in our success. What can I say… this woman’s got guts! Robbie will continue to chair WriteNow!, WBCA’s high school writing contest, and serve as a revered member of WBCA’s finance committee. Thank you!!

Neil Johnston also served his share of years on the Executive Committee, three as Board Co-Vice Chair, leading us up to “our big leap!” Neil’s academic strengths and contagious passion helped raise the profile of WBCA’s artists and exhibitions while contributing to the excellence of WBCA’s programming. Neil has chaired the Northern Lights Exhibition and will continue to co-chair this event, while also advising the gallery committee. Thank you Neil, for sharing your remarkable talents with WBCA. We are grateful to see you and Robbie both continue on as Emeritus Directors.

We are equally excited about the election of our 2014 Executive Committee members: Board Chair Dan Wachtler and Vice-Chair Mary Gove. Pat Berger will continue serving as Treasurer with a capital “T”, and Alan Kantrud returns as our rock’n Secretary. Thank you for accepting these important responsibilities and leadership roles.

Finally, a very hearty welcome to four new board members: Donna Bruhl, Craig Campbell, Karen April Wong, and Malia Yang-Xiong. We are excited to infuse our leadership team with these new voices, talents, and dedicated individuals.

Here’s to all of you who make Your Art Center the best there is!

Surface DecorationLynnea SchwietersLooking for new ways to add surface decoration to your clay surface? Consider using resist techniques to integrate your design onto the clay surface where your glazes can pool and accentuate your form. In this class we will explore several ways to create templates that are placed on the clay body at the greenware stage. Applying slip over the design along with the use of liquid resists such as latex, wax and acrylic will be demonstrated. Lynnea Schwieters works with high fire porcelain clay. In her demonstration she will show you how she makes large platters, alters them, applies surface techniques including the design of templates, carving, incising and slip application. After the demonstration students will create their own plate on the wheel altering the form and applying their desired surface decoration. Come to class prepared with ideas for your templates.

Build a Portable Brick OvenDavid S. CargoJoin award-winning baker David S. Cargo to learn how to build a portable stacked-brick oven. The oven is built from stacked bricks that are not mortared together and can be moved after the oven is built. Students will learn how to build a small oven by themselves and go from bare ground to cooking pizza in about 4 hours. Class discussion covers some of the differences between these portable brick ovens and more familiar designs such as Alan Scott ovens, Forno Bravo Pompeii ovens, and cob ovens such as those made popular by Kiko Denzer. The class covers siting the oven, preparing the ground for the oven, and then the practical techniques for construction. Every student gets a handout with plans for three different sizes of ovens, their bills of materials, and recipes for use with the oven. The oven is built to demonstrate the techniques used, and the plans that show how the ovens go together will be read. While the fire is heating the oven up, David demonstrates how to make dough for pizza, bread, naan, and pita bread. Later in the afternoon, the dough is formed into the proper shapes for baking, and some dough is formed for a loaf of bread. Finally, the pita bread, naan, and pizzas are baked (and eaten) and then the loaf of bread goes into the oven. Please bring a lunch for an hour break at noon, plus hat, gloves, note-taking materials and sturdy shoes (in case of falling bricks).

Painting with EncausticSylvia BensonJoin in on a new endeavor of working with hot beeswax which contains a resin as a hardening agent and pigments of many colors. It is called encaustic, an ancient art form dating back to the Greeks, which was revived by Jasper Johns and has gained popularity since the 90s. This medium is exciting because of its flexibility and versatility. Wax can be moved with a hot air gun, textured with tools, imbedded with beautiful paper, and turned into a collage. Step-by-step instruction and individual attention will help students develop their painting in this wonderful medium. Classes are limited to 5 students.

Pastel Landscape Workshop Cynthia KathThe focus of this workshop is to help students find, trust and enrich their own artistic voice through the wonderful medium of pastels. The class will look at techniques to learn how value, composition, style and color turn into great works of art. Students should bring whatever pastels they already have, if any, and a notebook. Cynthia will supply a variety of papers and a variety of hard and soft pastels. Instructor will teach how to create sanded paper and how to under-paint for your pastel painting. Students should feel free to bring some of their own photographs, especially those that have personal meaning. It is best to work from photos that have strong contrast, both darks and lights. Hint: usually landscapes start from about 30-40 feet in front of the viewer. $15 material fee covers paper, Golden Pastel Ground, neutral Acrylic paint and water soluble pastels. The instructor will provide some images as well. Students can look forward to Cynthia sharing her knowledge so they may discover the luminosity of this pure pigment and capture the spirit of pastels.

Gestural DrawingMike ReedAn effective drawing somehow “feels” right because contrast, contour, elasticity, structure, size, line quality, texture, and descriptive detail work together to create a sense of drama, form, and movement. These characteristic elements are all components of “gesture,” and learning to recognize and manipulate the underlying gesture of objects is essential to effectively rendering everything from dynamic figures, flowing drapery, and delicate organic forms, to exaggerated cartoons, graphic design, and lively abstracts. Some people seem to have an innate grasp of gesture and how to express it through drawing. Those with less native understanding often dismiss themselves as lacking talent, but the ability to recognize and use gesture to create effective drawings can be acquired by instruction, observation, and practice. Learning to see and interpret gesture is an ongoing process for all artists, and this class is designed to benefit artists of all experience levels.* Visit www.WhiteBearArts.org for a supply list.

iNG Drawing on the

Right Side of the BrainSuzanne StarksSome people have always wanted to learn how to draw but have been scared because they lack an artistic background or believe one needs to have “inborn talent.” This unique, two-part series will put those fears to rest, using an acclaimed workbook with drawing exercises that have proven to be highly effective. Students will learn to access the right side of the brain, which is where non-verbal and creative abilities are concentrated. This series is designed to teach complete novices how to draw and those who already draw to deepen their artistic perception. They will learn the foundation of drawing, “seeing” as an artist sees. Students will be challenged by exercises both in and outside of class, and their efforts will be rewarded with the gratification of being able to draw better than they would have ever guessed. Handouts outlining the material, a workbook tailored to the subject, and individual critiques will help everyone accomplish their goal of drawing better. Please register at least a week in advance for this class. Please let the office know if you already have the workbook. CALLiGRAPHY•••

Beginning CalligraphyPat BarrettThe application of calligraphy (“the art of beautiful writing”) is endless. It can be used for creating wedding invitations, greeting cards, or addressing envelopes; it can be used to enhance arts and crafts projects such as nature printing, scrap booking, photography, personalizing picture frames, writing in hand-made books, or even enhancing fine art paintings. In this class students will learn the basic steps necessary to write the lower-case Italic hand. The basic steps to be learned in this class include: getting comfortable with the broad-edge pen; letter proportion; letter shape, slant, and stroke direction; the importance of spaces, and many other pertinent points in the art of calligraphy. Because these steps are the basis for any calligraphic hand, students should leave the last class being able to analyze other “hands” and also have a better understanding of the steps necessary to recreate them. Please bring a piece of 18 x 24” foam core. The instructor will discuss other supplies at the first class. Please note: Students that have already learned the basics of calligraphy yet desire to have more guidance are welcome.
