¿Que es la Novena de Navidad? Los católicos en muchas culturas tradicionalmente rezan la Novena de Navidad (nueve días consecu-tivos de oración) desde diciembre 16-24. Esta devoción se centra en la espera de la venida de nuestro Rey, y nos ayuda a prepararnos espiritualmente para recibirlo en nuestros corazones. La Novena de Navidad, puede ser el rosario, la Liturgia de las horas u otras oraciones tradicionales. En la tradición mexicana, el término "Posada" se refiere a que cada día de la novena meditemos sobre el viaje que la Sagrada Familia que hizo de Nazaret a Belén. Cada "Posada" está compuesta de oración, de compar-tir alimentos tradicionales, y diversión para los niños. En la tradición filipina, Simbáng Gabi (Misa de Noche) se refiere a nueve días de misas devocionales practica-da por los Católicos Romanos y Aglipayans en Filipinas, en anticipación a la Navidad y en honor a la santísima Virgen María. Esto es similar a los nueve días de misas durante la media noche que se conducen en la víspera de Navidad que se practican en Puerto Rico, llamadas misas de Aguinaldo. Este año me gustaría que nosotros como comunidad parroquial, celebremos la Novena de Navidad, con la contribución de los diferentes grupos. Sólo podremos celebrar 5 días en lugar de 9. Mi intención es que, con la rica diversidad de nuestra parroquia, nos preparemos para la Navidad a través de la caridad, la compasión, el amor y acogiéndose mutuamente. Por favor, siéntase libre de participar en cualquier o todos los días de la Novena, y tengan una Feliz Navidad!

What is the Christmas Novena? Catholics in many cultures have traditionally prayed the Christmas Novena (nine consecu-tive days of prayer) from December 16-24. This devotion is centered on our expectation of the Coming King, and helps to prepare us spiritually to receive Him into our hearts. The Christmas Nove-na can be the Rosary, the Liturgy of the Hours, or other traditional prayers. In the Mexican tradition, the term “Posada” refers to each day of the novena to meditate on the trip that the Sacred Family made from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Every “Posada” contains prayer, shar-ing of traditional foods, and fun for children. In the filipino tradition, Simbáng Gabi (Night Mass) is a devotional nine-day series of Masses practiced by Roman Catholics and Aglipayans in the Philippines in anticipation of Christmas and to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is similar to the nine-day series of dawn masses leading to Christmas Eve practiced in Puerto Rico called Misa de Aguinaldo. This year, I would like us, as a parish community, to celebrate the Christmas Novena with the contribution of different groups. We will only celebrate 5 days in-stead of 9. My intention is that, in the rich diversity of our parish, we prepare for Christmas through a show of charity, compassion, love and generosity by welcoming one another. Please feel free to partic-ipate in any or all of the Novena days, and have a Merry Christmas!

NEWS OF COMFORT

In a time of preparation, much of it having to do with material things, it is good to hear the words of Isaiah, “Comfort, give comfort to my people, / says your God” (Isaiah 40:1). In a time of such stress and rush, when our usual burdens are augmented by piles of Christmas preparations, we can choose to slow down, take some time to heal, and appreciate the enormous gift we are about to receive. Christ, the Son of God, has be-come one of us, and knows our human limitations. Yet God, even now, is freeing us from the burdens that our inattentiveness to our God and to our deepest inner long-ings have heaped upon us. The Lord comes, not as a king with mighty armies, but as a shepherd leading the flocks with care and tenderness. Isaiah prophesies good news: our oppression is over, our sins forgiven. The sav-ior we have awaited is coming, not the first time, but in the end times, as our salvation.

Thank you to our parish family for your generous dona ons that helped us to be generous with so many seasonal and regular items for the holidays.

We were able to help families enjoy their Thanks-giving holiday and the soon to come Christmas holiday.

We are also so grateful for all our parishioners who par cipated in our Annual Giving Tree. This is the last Sunday. The gi s will be delivered to Catholic Chari es this Monday morning for needy families and Tommy’s Gi s will be picked up in the a ernoon to be brought to hospitals to be used in the ac vity room for the pa ents.

If you have not already signed up to help by donating homemade cookies for our homebound, you can still do so in the St. Joseph Room. We need you to bake 1 or 2 batches of cookies and deliver them to the rec-tory this Thursday, December 14th so we can pack the cookies on Friday, December 15th in the St. Joseph Room starting at 9:30 a.m. We will deliver cookies, Sunday, December 17th. You can also donate wrapped packaged Christ-mas cookies which will be donated to the local Nursing homes. If you can help us pack the cookies on the 15th, @9:30 a.m., please indi-cate your willingness on the sign-up sheet. Thank you for your participation.

5 Holiday Safety Tips… Give the gift of safety this holiday season. As your family begins holiday shopping, take 25 minutes to discuss these im-portant safety tips: 1. Make certain your children know to stay with you at all times while shopping and always CHECK FIRST with you or a trusted adult before they go anywhere. 2. If older children become separated from you while holiday shopping, have them meet you in a pre-designated spot such as the sales counter of the store or the mall’s information booth. 3. If separated, teach younger children to look for people who may be sources of help within the store or mall such as a uniformed law-enforcement or security officer, store salesperson with a nametag, person with a nametag who is work-ing in the information booth, or mother with children. 4. Make an outing to a mall a “teachable” experience in which children practice checking with you; locating the adults who may be able to help if they need assistance; and, for older children, going to the restroom with a friend. Make certain to never leave children alone at public facilities such as video arcades, movie theaters, or playgrounds as a convenient “babysitter” while they are holiday shopping.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Many people think that Saint Francis originated the Christmas crèche, but its origins go far back. The Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome has housed what is said to be relics of the cradle of Jesus since the seventh century. In time, every year during the Christmas season the reliquary (container for relics) was surrounded by an increasingly grand three-dimensional scene of the place of Jesus’ birth. Rocks and trees, houses, streams, figurines of vil-lagers going about their daily tasks were all includ-ed. It was a very dramatic presentation. If you’ve ever seen an elaborate model train installation, you get the idea. The proper term for this depiction is presepio, from the Latin word for “surround” or “hedge.” Over the centuries, the custom spread first to churches, and then to aristocratic homes. In Italy, whole chapels are often set aside for the presepio, and it is not unusual to have hundreds of figures. It can sometimes be a challenge to locate the Holy Family amid the crowd, almost like a Where’s Wal-do? children’s book. The oldest surviving presepio is in St. Mary Major and dates from the thirteenth century, although many pieces have been broken or lost. Saint Francis of Assisi took a decidedly crea-tive step in 1233 in the village of Greccio, when he directed his followers to fill a manger with hay and tether an ox and ass nearby. He then invited the villagers to attend Mass outdoors near the crib, the worshipers themselves becoming a living presepio. By the seventeenth century, the tradition was well-established, particularly in Naples, and had a firm hold in Portugal, Spain, and in the Provence region of France. Today, it is not unusual to find presepios with five hundred figures, a vivid reminder of Em-manuel, God-with-us!
