DRUG NAME ACTION INDICATION CONTRAINDICATION

SIDE/ADVERSE EFFECTS

NURSINGRESPONSIBILITIES

Generic name:Meloxican

Inhibits prostaglandin synthesis, probably by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase.

Decrease pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis. Also decreases fever

Relief of signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis (including juvenile rheumatoid arthritis)

>Hypersensitivity to drug and cross sensitivity may occur with other NSAIDs including aspirin

>Severe renal impairment

> Use cautiously in CV disease or rosk factor for CV disease (may increase risk of serious CV thrombotic events, MI and stroke)

CV: EdemaGI: GI bleeding, diarrheas, dyspepsia, nauseaDERM: pruritus, exfoliative dermatitisHEMAT: anemia, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia

>Patients who have asthma, aspirin-induced allergy and nasal polyps are at risk for developing hypersensitivity reactions. Assess for rhinitis, asthma, and urticaria

>Assess pain and ROM prior to and 1-2 hr following administration

>Advise patient to take drug with a full glass of water and remain in an upright position for 15-30 min. after administration

>Instruct patient to report to health care professional if rash, itching, visual disturbances, weught gain, edema or signs of hepatotoxicity occur.

NURSINGRESPONSIBILITIES

Generic name:Tranexamic Acid

Brand Name:Micranex

produces an antifibrinolytic effect by competitively inhibiting the activation of plasminogen to plasmin. It is also a weak noncompetitive inhibitor of plasmin.

>Hereditary angioneurotic edema

>Increased local fibrinolysis when the diagnosis is indicative of hyperfibrinolysis

>Patients with a history or risk of thrombosis

>Patients with acquired disturbances of color vision

>Pale skin

>Troubled breathing with exertion

> Unusual bleeding or bruising

>Unusual tiredness or weakness

> Difficulty with moving

> Fever

> Flushing

>Monitor closely in disseminated intravascular coagulation

>Advise patient to report side effects associated with the drug

>Discontinue if disturbance in colour vision occurs

DRUG NAME ACTION INDICATION CONTRAINDICATION

SIDE/ADVERSE EFFECTS NURSINGRESPONSIBILITIES

Generic name:Cefazolin sodium

Brand Name:

Interferes with bacterial cell-wall synthesis, causing cell to rupture and die

It is prescribed in the treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacterial strains.

> Known hypersensitivity to this drug or to any cephalosporin medication prohibits its use, as does severely impaired renal funcion. It is used with caution in patients who are allergic to penicillin or other drugs.

CNS: headache, lethargy, confusion, hemiparesis, paresthesia, seizures

CV: hypotension, palpitations, chest pain, vasodilation

EENT: hearing loss

GI: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps

GU: Nephrotoxicity

Hematologic: hemolytic anemia, bone marrow depression

Musculoskeletal: arthralgia

Respiratory: dyspnea

Skin: urticaria,

>Watch for signs and symptoms of superinfection and other serious adverse reactions.

>Be aware that cross-sensitivity to penicillins may occur.

>Instruct patient to take drug exactly as prescribed and to complete full course of therapy even when he feels better.

>Monitor CBC, prothrombin time, and kidney and liver function test results.

DRUG NAME ACTION INDICATION CONTRAINDICATION

SIDE/ADVERSE EFFECTS

NURSINGRESPONSIBILITIES

Generic name:Ferrous Sulfate

Brand Name:

An essential min eral found in hemoglobin and many enzymes. Enters the blood streams and is transported to the organs of the reticuloendothelial system where it is separated out and becomes part of iron stores

It is prescribed in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia.

Hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis, hemolytic anemias, and hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients prohibit its use.

GI: GI irritation, diarrhea, and constipation.

Derm: Flushing, urticaria

Resp: cough, dyspnea

CV: hypotension, hypertension, tachycardia

Misc: anaphylaxis, fever, sweating

>Assess nutritional status and dietary history to determine possible cause of anemia and need for patient teaching

>Assess bowel function for constipation or diarrhea

> Note for blood in the stool

.>Assess patient for signs and symptoms of anaphyaxis (rash, pruritis, wheezing, laryngeal edema). Notify physician.

>Encourage patient to comply with medication regimen, take missed doses as soon as remembered within 12 hr, otherwise, return to regular dosing\Don not double doses.
